Mission Works: Thanks to Donors 26
Dale Meyer and Chad Cattoor
In this 26th episode of “Mission Works: Thanks to Donors,” Concordia Seminary President Emeritus Dr. Dale A. Meyer, the program’s host, talks with the Seminary's Chief Financial Officer Chad Cattoor about the importance of donor support of the Seminary. More than 90% of the Seminary’s annual $24 million budget is a result of donor support with gift income making up 53% of the budget. “In the industry of higher education it’s almost unheard of,” Cattoor says. “In most higher education institutions they are tuition driven.” Mission Works is a weekly vlog that celebrates the significant role of Seminary supporters and highlights how donor gifts are making a difference in the Lord’s mission. Mission Works: Thanks to Donors 28
Dale Meyer and Chad Cattoor
In this 28th episode of “Mission Works: Thanks to Donors,” Concordia Seminary President Emeritus Dr. Dale A. Meyer, the program’s host, breaks down the funding pie of the Seminary with Chief Financial Officer Chad Cattoor. The two men discuss how the institution is adjusting its funding model to be on firm footing for the future. “Gift income is going down as a result of an aging donor base,” Cattoor says. “We have worked very hard at building the Seminary’s endowment. … Our goal is to continue to increase that.” Meyer adds, “This is significant because, if the donor base of the LCMS continues to be called to heaven, the gift income amount of the pie is going to continue to shrink and yet the mission has to go forward. Endowments are critical to filling what looks like is going to be an income gap.” Learn more at Support.

Mission Works: Thanks to Donors 29
Dale Meyer and Thomas Zelt
In this 29th episode of “Mission Works: Thanks to Donors,” Concordia Seminary President Emeritus Dr. Dale A. Meyer, the program’s host, chats with Dr. Thomas Zelt, senior pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Fremont, Calif. Each summer Zelt leads a group of seminarians on a study-abroad course to Israel that is underwritten by Seminary donors. Zelt says the course allows students to be where biblical events happened so they might be able to teach those stories and events more effectively and with greater impact. The course “sets the biblical story in its geographic and its local and real context,” Zelt says. “The biblical events happened before the written Word happened. So it’s attempting to take the written Word and connect it up to the biblical places — the valleys, the hills, the cultural context in which those stories happened, and to bring them to life. It’s a very exciting opportunity to take seminarians and those who will be teaching the Word and connect it to places.” Mission Works is a weekly vlog that celebrates the significant role of Seminary supporters and highlights how donor gifts are making a difference in the Lord’s mission. Meyer, the program’s host, talks with two students who just returned from Israel as part of an annual study-abroad course that is underwritten by Seminary donors. The students, Graham Jenkins and Janis Mikits, say the trip will enrich their ministry for years to come. Jenkins calls it an “unreal experience” that strengthened his faith. “God is a creator,” Mikits adds. “He comes down to His creation to lovingly care for it and to interact with it. Being in the Holy Land, seeing where Jesus walked and where he taught made it really come home to me.” Mission Works is a weekly vlog that celebrates the significant role of Seminary supporters and highlights how donor gifts are making a difference in the Lord’s mission.
