Abstract
The thesis of this study was that the Roman Catholic Church in the United States has operated with varied consistency in its attitude toward the relation of Church and State as this relation finds practical application in the state support of parochial school education. Important in this connection have been the various statements and actions on the part of the Church as to who has the right to educate the child. It seems to be clear that the encyclicals of the popes; together with the official declarations of the American Councils and the united hierarchy of' the United States have been quite consistent. But, in the attempts of the various compromise plans, in the statements of single members of the hierarchy under specific conditions, or• in the heat of controversy,, the application of the official position of the church often has become largely a matter of expediency.
