Abstract
This work attempts to answer these questions by proposing that the genealogy has a particular narrative function. Namely, it works to call to mind a particular plotline. Chapter two will examine the structure and special features of the genealogy. One feature of the genealogy is its annotations, places where it breaks its syntactic pattern. (These are the notes that seem to offer extraneous information.) Chapter three will spotlight the genealogy's annotations. The contention of this paper is that the annotations allude to several Old Testament traditions that follow a similar narrative outline or plotline. Chapter four will explicate this Old Testament background.
