  • Investigating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ-A New Transdisciplinary Approach by Andrew Loke

Investigating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ-A New Transdisciplinary Approach

    Andrew Loke

This book offers a new contribution by addressing issues using a transdisciplinary approach, that is, one which integrates different disciplines—in this case, historical-critical studies of the Bible, psychology, comparative religion, analytic philosophy, and theology—to create a new methodology that moves beyond discipline-specific approaches to address a problem. Utilizing an original analytical framework, I shall demonstrate that a logically exhaustive list of categories of hypotheses in relation to the claims of Jesus’ post-mortem appearances and the outcome of Jesus’ body can be formulated—indeed, this would be the first monograph on Jesus’ resurrection to demonstrate a comprehensive coverage of all the categories of hypotheses. I shall show how such a methodological procedure contributes to the contemporary debate involving historians, philosophers, and theologians concerning the recognition of miracles. I shall address all these hypotheses and their combinations in detail and offer a corrective to the problematic analyses that beset their supporting arguments in recent literature.

    Stanislau Paulau

As early as 1534 an Ethiopian monk traveled to Wittenberg to get in touch with Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. The theological dialogue that resulted from this marked the beginning of a history of entanglement between Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity and European Protestantism. The present work for the first time reveals the history of the diverse interactions between these previously separately examined variants of Christianity in the period from the 16th to the early 20th century and thus makes a fundamental contribution to the history of global Christianity. Methodically, the work ties in with the approach of the histoire croisée and makes it fruitful for transdenominational church historiography. Thus, the book offers a new look at both African and European church history in modern times and shows an example of the way in which denominational and culturally divergent variants of Christianity were linked across continents.

  • Luther's Doctrine of the Two Kingdoms in the Context of His Theology by Heinrich Bornkamm

Luther's Doctrine of the Two Kingdoms in the Context of His Theology

    Heinrich Bornkamm

In this essay, the distinguished church historian of Heidelberg University gives us a guided tour through one of the most complex and controversial problems in the interpretation of Christian ethics. Luther’s “two kingdoms” doctrine has been variously praised and damned in recent theology. Thinkers such as Nygren, Althaus, and Ebeling have defended the doctrine as the source of a salutary political realism (since it reminds us that no social order as such will ever be identical with the kingdom of Christ), combined with a definite sense of Christian social responsibility (since the “kingdom on the left” is also God’s kingdom, in which his will-to-justice is to be enacted). On the other hand, theologians such as Barth and Bonhoeffer have condemned the doctrine as the source of a hopeless dualism and defeatism.

  • The Congregation's Right to Choose Its Pastor by C F W Walther, Fred Kramer, and Wilbert Rosin

The Congregation's Right to Choose Its Pastor

C F W Walther, Fred Kramer, and Wilbert Rosin

The image of the pastor or religious leader, his authority, function and role, is currently a lively topic for discussion, as church groups merge and emerge, as clergy are robed and disrobed, as town and gown and church and state issues erupt and disrupt the peace of the church and the parish. Therefore this translation of Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm Walther's essay, Das Gemeindewahlrecht, delineating the voting rights of the congregation, appears at an appropriate time. The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has not been

  • Walther and Missions by Herman Koppelmann

    Walther and Missions

    Herman Koppelmann

Yes, Walther was interested in missions and was actively engaged in them. He selected men who were to go out as missionaries to various sections of our country and wanted the members of the Synod to support this endeavor with gifts and prayers. When he printed his first mission sermon in Der.Lutheraner he stated in a footnote that he did not feel the sermon worthy of being distributed more widely, but because many who had heard it urged that ft would further the cause of missions, he did not want to withhold it if it would help this cause even a little bit.
