Abstract

To exhibit in its origin and growth the new order of things, which Samuel had introduced, the prophetic historian of the books of Samuel goes back to the time of Samuel’s birth and makes us acquainted not only with the political oppression under which Israel was suffering but also with the religious conditions at the close of the period of the Judges and during the high priesthood of Eli. He pictures to us the religious decline under Ell.
