Abstract
The amount of material produced by Augustine is very great, and an examination of all of it is beyond the scope of this work. The polemical writings will not be considered at all. Of the other works, the “City of God” will be the basic work used in the thesis with considerable dependence upon his sermons and commentary on the Psalms. Other nonpolemical writings were used where they were relevant to the thesis.
