Abstract

In the following chapters the course of this controversy will be traced, an investigation of certain critical quotations From Luther will be carried out, and some definite conclusions as to the chief arena of disagreement will be reached. In order to achieve the proper historical perspective, we shall trace in this first chapter the doctrine of justification in the· sixteenth century as set forth by Luther, Melanchthon, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Osiander, and the Formula of Concord.
