Abstract

It is hoped that this paper will contribute to a better understanding of those critical days of old, and that the reader will acquire a deeper appreciation of the virtues and shortcomings of the ancient stalwarts who march across its pages. If this thesis fails to do this, it is not the fault of the subject matter, but that of the writer.
