Description

Santiago, Chile, is one of the most modern and prosperous cities in South America, making it a favored destination for immigrants. Since 2015, Santiago has received more than 800,000 immigrants, swelling the capital city’s population to near 7 million. Primarily from Venezuela, Peru and Haiti, immigrants now make up a startling 11% of the population (up from 1.3% just 10 years ago). Since 2017, “Divine Providence” Lutheran Church has been ministering to the immigrant population and now has a congregation of 50-plus souls, 80% of whom are between the ages of 20 and 40. Why do so many young adults come to this congregation? What are the “lessons learned” that can be applied to immigrant ministry in other urban centers? Tino shares his experiences.
