"E Romano di Roma," he is a Roman from Rome, the joyful multitudes shouted. For the first time in over 200 years a native Roman had been elected Bishop of Rome. The time was 5:30 P. M., the day March 2, 1939, the 63d birthday of Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli.
