Abstract

The phrase, Αύτός ύμȃς βαπτίσει ε̍ν πνεύματι α̍γι̍ψ καί πυρί has puzzled me for years. This thesis is an attempt to solve the puzzle. The first half of the thesis will be a history of the interpretation of this phrase. An essay by James D. G. Dunn will provide the outline for this historical review. The second half of the thesis will be the interpretation of the phrase.
