Abstract

This thesis project will investigate the Matthean and Lucan use of δ Κλαυθμὀs Καἰ ὀ βρυγμὀs Τ̣͂ῶν ὀδντων, "the weeping and the gnashing of teeth." All of the New Testament passages where this phrase occurs will be studied, which includes Matthew 8:5-13; 13:36-43, 44-50; 22:1-14; 24:45-51; 25:14-30, and Luke 13:22-30. The primary focus of studying these passages will be to determine what Christ is referring to by using this phrase. Also, any relevant subjects that will have bearing on the understanding of the use of these terms, such as the banquet and the outer darkness, will be investigated at the same time.
