Abstract

In formulating a working definition of metaphor for the purposes of this thesis, we will follow the lead of Murfin and Ray, Travers, and others who use the term 'metaphor' in its broadest sense. Therefore symbols, similes and other figures of speech that involve comparison will fall under this definition; and as previously noted these comparisons can be expressed or implied.
