WEBVTT 00:00.700 --> 00:04.100 Grace and peace to you from God, our Father and from the Lord and 00:04.100 --> 00:05.600 Savior Jesus Christ. 00:06.200 --> 00:08.100 Amen. You may be seated. 00:13.900 --> 00:17.100 In the end, it all comes down to Jesus. 00:18.300 --> 00:22.600 Those are true words, but very strange, when I once heard them spoken 00:22.600 --> 00:27.800 by a Jewish rabbi to me, and some others, in the end, it all comes 00:27.800 --> 00:29.300 down to Jesus. 00:30.300 --> 00:34.100 You may not know this about me, but in my undergrad, I was a criminal 00:34.100 --> 00:38.500 justice major pre-law. I was planning to go to law school before 00:38.500 --> 00:41.900 deciding to go to the Seminary, but I was in school in Southern 00:41.900 --> 00:46.000 California. Where there just lots and lots of General Ed requirements. 00:46.500 --> 00:49.800 And I filled up most of my general led by taking classes in the 00:49.800 --> 00:52.600 religious studies Department. That kind of just showed 00:52.600 --> 00:56.600 I just had a natural interest in religious studies. And I recall there 00:56.600 --> 01:01.100 were three Jesuit priests in that department. two 01:01.200 --> 01:07.100 Liberal Protestant pastors one was LCA, this is before the ELCA 01:07.100 --> 01:12.400 existed just to date myself. There was one Jewish rabbi and then as an 01:12.400 --> 01:15.700 adjunct, professor Professor one, Muslim scholar, who later, became 01:15.700 --> 01:20.600 the Iman of the mosque of the mosque in Garden Grove. And they got to 01:20.600 --> 01:21.500 know they liked me 01:21.500 --> 01:24.800 they were all proud when I went to the seminary though, angry that I 01:24.800 --> 01:26.000 came to this Seminary. 01:26.400 --> 01:29.000 When they found out that this was a seminary, I was going to attend. 01:29.400 --> 01:32.400 But I remember talking once with one of these professors and he 01:32.400 --> 01:35.300 complained about the religious Studies classes. 01:35.300 --> 01:39.200 He said you know we designed these courses for secular minded people 01:39.800 --> 01:43.900 to teach them about religion and why religion is important. And yet, 01:43.900 --> 01:47.600 all we get in these classes are a bunch of Christians, right? 01:47.900 --> 01:51.700 But California, just excelled with a lot of Evangelical Christians 01:51.700 --> 01:55.000 back in those days and everybody taking these courses, they said it's 01:55.000 --> 01:59.600 just 90% Evangelical Christians and he said, you just know the reason 01:59.600 --> 02:04.000 they're there, is they want to get some training so they could better 02:04.000 --> 02:06.800 witness Christ to Muslims, and Hindus and Jews. 02:07.200 --> 02:09.300 And that's they, the goal of 02:09.300 --> 02:12.600 this department was to get us all to respect every religion, equally. 02:13.000 --> 02:15.300 And then I, then they say, of course, why are you taking these 02:15.300 --> 02:15.800 courses? 02:15.800 --> 02:19.600 And it's kind of well, yeah, I guess I want to get some training and 02:19.600 --> 02:24.900 how to witness Jesus, responsibly to all these other people. But one 02:24.900 --> 02:29.500 of my favorite classes was the basic world religions, which was taught 02:29.500 --> 02:31.400 by the Jewish rabbi. 02:32.300 --> 02:35.300 This was the one guy who did not resent, the fact that they were all 02:35.300 --> 02:36.400 Christians in his class. 02:36.400 --> 02:39.600 In fact, he once said, I love the fact that I've got a bunch of 02:39.600 --> 02:42.500 Christians listening to me because he said, I just can't wait to argue 02:42.500 --> 02:42.900 with you. 02:43.300 --> 02:46.500 And every class would be this, like, friendly back and forth, why we 02:46.500 --> 02:48.600 believe this, why are you believe that. 02:49.100 --> 02:52.400 And eventually we found out this guy had a very interesting history. 02:53.000 --> 02:57.100 He was born and raised a Christian, he was Roman Catholic. 02:57.100 --> 02:59.900 He even went to the seminary to become a Roman Catholic priest. 03:00.600 --> 03:04.300 But while at the Seminary, he abandoned his Christian faith and 03:04.300 --> 03:05.700 converted to Judaism. 03:06.200 --> 03:09.700 This guy had studied, Greek even came in with his Nestle-Aland. 03:09.700 --> 03:13.400 Think it was addition 25 back in those days and he could, he would 03:13.400 --> 03:16.900 read passages from the Greek, whenever a Christian, would bring up 03:16.900 --> 03:18.400 some new testament passage. 03:19.100 --> 03:22.700 But what was strange was, though, he was a convert to Judaism from 03:22.700 --> 03:23.700 Christianity. 03:24.300 --> 03:30.400 His parents were converts to Christianity from Judaism and when Are 03:30.400 --> 03:32.500 your parents still Christian? 03:32.800 --> 03:33.900 He said sadly 03:33.900 --> 03:36.900 yes, they are like rocks immovable. 03:37.400 --> 03:40.900 And so again this is a class where most everybody is a Christian. 03:40.900 --> 03:43.900 And I remember all the hands went up when he told the story and then 03:43.900 --> 03:48.500 somebody asked, well, why did you leave Christianity and go back to 03:48.500 --> 03:53.200 Judaism? And his answer was you know, there's a lot of reasons, but in 03:53.200 --> 03:56.100 the end it all comes back to Jesus. 03:56.300 --> 03:57.700 It all comes down to Jesus. 03:58.100 --> 03:59.500 And well, what do you mean by that? 03:59.500 --> 04:02.500 And he said, well, All the be a Christian and then he said to be a 04:02.600 --> 04:07.200 Christ tian, you got to believe that Jesus is the Christ and I no 04:07.200 --> 04:09.500 longer believe that Jesus is the Christ. 04:09.600 --> 04:13.800 So I'm no longer a Christian and then the hands went up. And okay, 04:13.800 --> 04:14.400 well, doctor 04:14.400 --> 04:15.500 why do you not believe that 04:15.500 --> 04:18.500 Jesus is the Christ? And he said, it's really basic. 04:19.399 --> 04:21.399 All the Messianic prophecies that you guys 04:21.399 --> 04:23.500 say are Messianic prophecies are not Messianic 04:23.500 --> 04:27.900 prophecies. The Messianic prophecies that we say are Messianic 04:27.900 --> 04:29.700 prophecies are Messianic prophecies. 04:30.300 --> 04:34.400 And he cited actually our reading today, Jeremiah 33 and said, you 04:34.400 --> 04:37.900 know, when the Messiah is here, there's going to be a son of David 04:37.900 --> 04:41.200 sitting on the throne in Jerusalem, Levitical priests are going to be 04:41.200 --> 04:44.400 re-established and Jesus didn't do that. 04:44.700 --> 04:46.100 Therefore he's not the Messiah. 04:47.000 --> 04:49.700 And again bunch of hands went up and somebody said, you know, he's 04:49.700 --> 04:52.700 going to come back and he's going to do all those things then bring in 04:52.700 --> 04:53.600 the fulfillment. 04:53.800 --> 04:55.400 And he said, he made us a promise. 04:55.400 --> 04:58.500 He said, you know, if Jesus does come back the way you say, I will 04:58.500 --> 05:00.000 believe that he is the Messiah. 05:00.600 --> 05:01.800 And then somebody rose their hand, 05:01.800 --> 05:07.000 I think was me, and said, you know, that may be a little too late. And 05:07.000 --> 05:10.700 he said and he said, you know what, that actually scares me right. 05:11.000 --> 05:13.900 There was a pause and then suddenly, the different line of questions, 05:13.900 --> 05:14.400 begin. 05:14.800 --> 05:18.600 Well, okay, we know why you left Judaism, but why did your parents 05:19.100 --> 05:19.900 you 05:19.900 --> 05:20.100 left 05:20.100 --> 05:20.700 Christianity. 05:20.700 --> 05:24.200 But why did your parents leave Judaism to become Christians and he 05:24.200 --> 05:25.500 knew his parents very well. 05:25.500 --> 05:29.800 And so he said, well in the end, it all comes down to Jesus. 05:30.500 --> 05:35.600 You see, they think he is the Messiah and that's why they're Christ 05:35.600 --> 05:36.200 tians. 05:36.500 --> 05:39.200 They confessed Jesus to be the Christ. 05:39.800 --> 05:41.200 And then we asked okay, why? 05:41.200 --> 05:44.300 And he said, we argue about this every time we get together but 05:44.500 --> 05:48.600 they're convinced that that servant in Isaiah especially Isaiah 52 05:48.600 --> 05:50.300 53, that that could be no one 05:50.300 --> 05:54.300 but Jesus. They're convinced that this servant of Yahweh and whom the 05:54.300 --> 05:54.800 Nations 05:54.800 --> 05:58.000 will put their hope well dah that has to be Jesus. 05:58.200 --> 05:59.800 I mean they would say historically 06:00.100 --> 06:01.900 who is the man? 06:01.900 --> 06:05.400 The one Israelite above all others, in which the Gentiles have placed 06:05.400 --> 06:06.200 their hope? 06:06.300 --> 06:09.600 And they would say, historically, it's obvious, it's Jesus. 06:10.400 --> 06:13.700 They would say, who is the guy in Psalm 22, that Jesus actually 06:13.700 --> 06:17.300 quotes, who has the holes in his hands and feet, its Jesus. 06:17.800 --> 06:20.800 And then finally he said there was that one thing he can never argue 06:20.800 --> 06:26.700 back the fact that they said their salvation had come to them through 06:26.700 --> 06:27.600 Jesus. 06:28.100 --> 06:32.800 They experience salvation, they experience justification by trusting in 06:32.800 --> 06:35.400 Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah. 06:35.700 --> 06:39.600 And they knew that their God, the God of Israel had accepted them back 06:39.600 --> 06:42.600 as his people that he had restored them. 06:42.900 --> 06:43.400 In a sense 06:43.400 --> 06:47.900 they could say that Judah is now at rest, at least for us because we 06:47.900 --> 06:51.900 are Jews who now rest securely in the grace of God, that we have 06:51.900 --> 06:54.300 received through faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ. 06:54.600 --> 06:58.800 And he said he there is no academic answer, he would give back to 06:58.800 --> 06:59.300 that. 07:00.100 --> 07:01.300 And they would say, yeah 07:01.700 --> 07:05.300 Jesus was the righteous branch of David. 07:06.000 --> 07:08.100 And therefore we could say of Jesus 07:08.500 --> 07:11.200 the Lord is our righteousness. 07:12.400 --> 07:13.400 I got to know this man 07:13.400 --> 07:17.100 a little better one-on-one and he really was conflicted about leaving 07:17.100 --> 07:21.000 Christianity and he really said, I wish Jesus was the Messiah. But it 07:21.000 --> 07:24.500 just for him, he came back to the fact that he was not sitting on a 07:24.500 --> 07:28.700 throne in Jerusalem right now that what that for him was the reason he 07:28.700 --> 07:33.800 rejected Christianity. Yet his parents trusted the same Jesus for 07:33.800 --> 07:37.800 their salvation, as do each of you. 07:39.300 --> 07:43.100 When we hear this lesson read in its entirety, we all know the first 07:43.100 --> 07:47.700 paragraph, that God does promise that even as his Covenant with day and 07:47.700 --> 07:49.500 night will not be violated. 07:49.500 --> 07:53.500 He is going to ensure that there will be a day when the sons of David 07:53.500 --> 07:57.200 sit upon the throne and when there is no lack of Levitical, priests to 07:57.200 --> 08:01.400 serve him before his Altar. And in response to that, I was thinking 08:01.400 --> 08:04.800 hard maybe one of our Old Testament, professors can come up and give 08:04.800 --> 08:08.300 an explanation but I end up going back to what Paul says in First 08:08.300 --> 08:08.500 Corinthians 08:08.600 --> 08:09.600 one verse 20. 08:09.800 --> 08:14.600 No matter how many promises God has made, they are yes in Christ. 08:14.600 --> 08:22.500 So through him, the amen is spoken by us to the glory of God. And so 08:22.500 --> 08:25.700 I proclaim to you what I believe and what I know and what you know 08:25.700 --> 08:30.800 that there was a righteous branch that sprung up for David and that 08:30.800 --> 08:33.100 righteous Branch was our Lord Jesus Christ. 08:33.100 --> 08:38.600 Who did come to Israel, his people. Who did come to save his people 08:38.600 --> 08:43.500 from their sins and who accomplished that in his ministry. 08:44.000 --> 08:48.300 And so in Jesus, all the people of Israel who believe in Jesus can 08:48.300 --> 08:52.200 say, the Lord is our righteousness. 08:52.900 --> 08:54.600 Kind of a nice play on words there. 08:54.800 --> 08:57.900 Zedekiah the last son of David to sit upon the throne. 08:57.900 --> 08:59.700 His name means the Lord is my 09:00.000 --> 09:03.500 righteousness. But Jesus gives us one better. 09:04.200 --> 09:06.500 The Lord is our righteousness. 09:07.100 --> 09:11.400 And if that were not enough this gospel that Jesus brought to His 09:11.400 --> 09:16.500 people, Israel has gone forth from them, through his Apostles, and has 09:16.500 --> 09:20.900 come to all of us Gentiles so that we could look at that same Jesus, 09:20.900 --> 09:26.200 Israel's Savior and say there is my savior there is a righteous Branch 09:26.200 --> 09:26.800 for David 09:26.800 --> 09:29.600 that is also a righteous Branch for us. 09:30.100 --> 09:35.000 For in him, you too have experienced justification, God has declared 09:35.000 --> 09:39.300 you righteous from your sins, and rebellions. God has reconciled you to 09:39.300 --> 09:44.300 himself and you are now his people in Jesus Christ. 09:45.000 --> 09:47.200 And so we could say, of Jesus. 09:47.800 --> 09:52.400 The Lord is our righteousness. Even us Gentiles 09:52.400 --> 09:57.300 the Lord has brought his righteousness to us through his son, Jesus 09:57.300 --> 09:58.100 Christ. 09:59.000 --> 10:05.000 And so in the end, yes it always does come down to Jesus the author 10:05.000 --> 10:06.400 and Perfecter of our faith. 10:08.500 --> 10:13.800 The Lord is our righteousness, so God declares it to you today in 10:13.800 --> 10:14.200 Christ 10:14.200 --> 10:15.300 Jesus our Lord. 10:16.000 --> 10:16.500 Amen. 10:17.800 --> 10:18.700 And May the peace 10:18.700 --> 10:20.100 that passes all understanding 10:20.100 --> 10:22.200 keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 10:22.600 --> 10:23.100 Amen.
