WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.223 --> 00:00:02.023 You may be seated. 2 00:00:05.123 --> 00:00:08.323 Grace, mercy, and peace, be unto you from God 3 00:00:08.323 --> 00:00:10.823 our Father from our Lord and Savior 4 00:00:10.823 --> 00:00:16.923 Jesus Christ. Amen. The text is the first part of today's Gospel from Mark 5 00:00:16.923 --> 00:00:17.823 chapter 6. 6 00:00:20.323 --> 00:00:26.123 There's a congregation that didn't have a clear written policy regarding vacation 7 00:00:26.123 --> 00:00:27.923 time for the pastor. 8 00:00:28.923 --> 00:00:32.223 Call documents simply said negotiable. 9 00:00:33.123 --> 00:00:36.523 Don't ever accept the call where part of it is negotiable. 10 00:00:38.723 --> 00:00:39.423 Because you see 11 00:00:44.323 --> 00:00:46.823 every year it had to be brought up before the Voters Assembly. And every year it turned embarrassing for the pastor. 12 00:00:48.323 --> 00:00:53.823 And so he pleaded with them to begged them, he pestered them, 13 00:00:53.823 --> 00:00:57.223 he badgered them and finally he wore them down. 14 00:00:58.723 --> 00:01:01.423 He was convinced, they needed a written policy. 15 00:01:01.423 --> 00:01:05.523 And so at the next voters, meeting the chairman of the congregation 16 00:01:05.523 --> 00:01:11.823 went before the congregation and presented a resolution. He introduced 17 00:01:11.823 --> 00:01:13.623 it saying the Church Council 18 00:01:13.623 --> 00:01:18.623 now feels it's important that we give our pastor a permanent vacation. 19 00:01:21.123 --> 00:01:26.723 That was a joke, a permanent vacation, they were tired of him. Vacation seemed 20 00:01:26.723 --> 00:01:26.923 to be on everybodies 21 00:01:27.523 --> 00:01:28.623 mind right now. 22 00:01:28.623 --> 00:01:30.023 Some of us have just 23 00:01:30.623 --> 00:01:31.323 come back from vacation. 24 00:01:32.523 --> 00:01:36.423 And right Pastor Asburry, some of us are just going on vacation. 25 00:01:36.423 --> 00:01:40.123 Everybody's thinking about vacation except those of you who are in 26 00:01:40.123 --> 00:01:41.323 Hebrew and Greek. 27 00:01:41.323 --> 00:01:43.223 You don't get a vacation. 28 00:01:45.123 --> 00:01:47.723 Jesus and planned a little vacation for his disciples. 29 00:01:49.423 --> 00:01:52.723 They just returned from their first missionary journey on their own. 30 00:01:53.623 --> 00:01:57.423 They gladly reported Jesus to Jesus all that they had done. 31 00:01:58.423 --> 00:02:04.323 They were probably feeling a little bit entitled as though they had 32 00:02:04.323 --> 00:02:07.023 earned a few days of rest and recuperation. 33 00:02:08.423 --> 00:02:12.723 But there were so many people coming to Jesus and they were going to get any 34 00:02:12.723 --> 00:02:13.023 rest 35 00:02:13.023 --> 00:02:17.023 they were going to have to get away from the crowd by themselves. 36 00:02:17.023 --> 00:02:21.523 And so they all got into a boat, great place for vacation, they headed 37 00:02:21.523 --> 00:02:25.723 across the lake to the other side of a quiet desolate place. 38 00:02:27.523 --> 00:02:29.723 But when they arrived there, it wasn't meant to be 39 00:02:31.323 --> 00:02:36.923 because they were met by a crowd, a large crowd, thousands of people 40 00:02:36.923 --> 00:02:38.423 have gotten there ahead of him. 41 00:02:39.723 --> 00:02:43.023 I wonder what those disciples thought as 42 00:02:43.023 --> 00:02:45.523 they saw that crowd waiting for them. 43 00:02:46.823 --> 00:02:51.423 I suspect that they were pretty disappointed and complained give us a 44 00:02:51.423 --> 00:02:51.823 break. 45 00:02:53.123 --> 00:02:54.823 We've been on this Mission journey. 46 00:02:54.823 --> 00:02:56.223 We've been working hard. 47 00:02:56.223 --> 00:02:57.223 We know 48 00:02:57.223 --> 00:02:58.323 we're supposed to love. 49 00:02:58.323 --> 00:02:59.623 We're supposed to care. 50 00:02:59.623 --> 00:03:02.023 We're supposed to keep to serve our neighbor. 51 00:03:02.023 --> 00:03:03.423 We've been doing all of that. 52 00:03:03.423 --> 00:03:06.623 What more do you people expect of us? 53 00:03:06.623 --> 00:03:11.023 I suspect, that's what the disciples thought. 54 00:03:12.323 --> 00:03:14.623 Because honestly, I've been there too. 55 00:03:16.623 --> 00:03:18.723 And with all of your vocations 56 00:03:19.823 --> 00:03:25.423 with all of the expectations the demands all of the assignments, 57 00:03:25.423 --> 00:03:30.723 all the hours that you spent studying Hebrew, Greek. All the pressure 58 00:03:30.723 --> 00:03:31.823 that's put on you 59 00:03:31.823 --> 00:03:32.923 you've go on there, too. 60 00:03:34.223 --> 00:03:37.323 There probably been times when you thought, that's it 61 00:03:37.323 --> 00:03:37.723 I'm done 62 00:03:37.723 --> 00:03:41.923 I've given all I've got to give, I can't spend another hour on this 63 00:03:41.923 --> 00:03:42.223 assignment. 64 00:03:42.223 --> 00:03:43.423 Just leave me alone. 65 00:03:46.423 --> 00:03:48.423 But in those times, you start feeling guilty. 66 00:03:49.423 --> 00:03:52.823 And then a brother or sister comes to you needing a little bit of 67 00:03:52.823 --> 00:03:53.123 help. 68 00:03:54.523 --> 00:03:58.223 You might grumble and complain and you might resent it and you might 69 00:03:58.223 --> 00:04:02.923 go about it with a bad attitude but you do it. 70 00:04:05.023 --> 00:04:08.223 I suspect Jesus was tired too. 71 00:04:09.523 --> 00:04:12.823 Remember at this point he was bearing the weight of the whole world. 72 00:04:14.023 --> 00:04:16.723 But see how Jesus loved. 73 00:04:17.623 --> 00:04:22.423 When he saw this crowd waiting for him, he saw more than all of the 74 00:04:22.423 --> 00:04:25.523 inconveniences all the demands that they were putting on him. 75 00:04:25.523 --> 00:04:30.123 He saw more than this faceless mass of people. He saw that 76 00:04:30.123 --> 00:04:33.423 each one of them had come to him with a specific need. 77 00:04:35.223 --> 00:04:37.323 There were some who came needing healing. 78 00:04:39.023 --> 00:04:41.923 There were some who were sorrowing needing comfort. 79 00:04:43.123 --> 00:04:48.023 There were those who are struggling with temptations and guilty consciences 80 00:04:48.023 --> 00:04:49.223 needing forgiveness. 81 00:04:50.823 --> 00:04:56.423 Some needed encouragement and hope, and to be lifted up, with his 82 00:04:56.423 --> 00:04:57.223 Word of Life. 83 00:04:59.823 --> 00:05:04.023 What do you see when all those people come to you? 84 00:05:05.523 --> 00:05:09.223 When you're at home with your spouse and kids? When you're walking 85 00:05:09.223 --> 00:05:12.223 around the campus? When you're working at Schnucks? When you're 86 00:05:12.223 --> 00:05:15.723 sitting down with a drink, with your friends, what do you see? 87 00:05:19.123 --> 00:05:21.923 Confess that we usually see what we want to see 88 00:05:23.323 --> 00:05:24.723 and we overlook the obvious. 89 00:05:26.823 --> 00:05:30.423 We filter out everything that threatens our peace and tranquility. 90 00:05:31.823 --> 00:05:35.923 We can live in the same home, sit in the same classroom work, 91 00:05:35.923 --> 00:05:40.723 side-by-side with the same people every day and never really see 92 00:05:40.723 --> 00:05:44.823 what's going on in their lives, or what it is, that they truly need. 93 00:05:47.223 --> 00:05:51.423 An so husbands and wives get caught up in a power struggle, for control 94 00:05:51.423 --> 00:05:56.423 of the marriage and they see their spouse as an opponent. 95 00:05:56.423 --> 00:06:00.723 Instead of has the god-given gift that they promised to love and 96 00:06:00.723 --> 00:06:00.923 cherish. 97 00:06:03.923 --> 00:06:08.323 Parents see their children acting out or talkin back and lose their 98 00:06:08.323 --> 00:06:09.723 patience with those little brats. 99 00:06:09.723 --> 00:06:14.023 Instead of seeing the precious gifts that God has given them. 100 00:06:16.123 --> 00:06:24.023 Every workplace, every classroom has an obnoxious colleague who always 101 00:06:24.023 --> 00:06:25.323 has to have his mouth open. 102 00:06:26.523 --> 00:06:30.423 Every community has an inconsiderate neighbor who's out there, 103 00:06:30.423 --> 00:06:31.323 disturbing our peace. 104 00:06:32.823 --> 00:06:35.023 When we see them, we get irritated. 105 00:06:36.823 --> 00:06:39.123 But do we need, do we see someone in need?
