WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.023 --> 00:00:05.323 I am from Acts chapter 2 and they were amazed and astonished 2 00:00:05.323 --> 00:00:09.323 saying are not all these who are speaking Galileans. 3 00:00:09.323 --> 00:00:17.623 And how is it that we hear each of us in his own native language? 4 00:00:20.223 --> 00:00:22.323 It's fitting that in a place like this 5 00:00:22.323 --> 00:00:23.123 today we have a very good academic answer. 6 00:00:25.723 --> 00:00:29.723 We have been sitting through Pentecost celebrations for some of us 7 00:00:29.723 --> 00:00:31.423 perhaps for a couple of decades, 8 00:00:31.423 --> 00:00:33.123 others may be a few more. 9 00:00:33.123 --> 00:00:35.423 We've heard the answer. 10 00:00:35.423 --> 00:00:39.323 We've heard the account on a number of different occasions. 11 00:00:39.323 --> 00:00:45.523 We have two thousand years of good theology to fall back upon, it's an 12 00:00:45.523 --> 00:00:46.623 easy answer. 13 00:00:48.023 --> 00:00:50.223 It's the spirit. 14 00:00:50.223 --> 00:00:55.723 God's Spirit the spirit that Jesus had promised to send to his people came 15 00:00:55.723 --> 00:01:01.023 and it caused all those people that day to hear God's word in their 16 00:01:01.023 --> 00:01:01.923 own languages. 17 00:01:03.423 --> 00:01:07.823 He inspired those Apostles to speak those languages 18 00:01:09.623 --> 00:01:11.423 but then he didn't stop there. 19 00:01:12.523 --> 00:01:18.723 He also then inspired the faith that began to take root upon hearing 20 00:01:18.723 --> 00:01:19.923 that word of God 21 00:01:19.923 --> 00:01:22.623 as it entered their ears and into their souls. 22 00:01:23.923 --> 00:01:29.823 The Spirit that we believe and teach and confess still to this date that 23 00:01:29.823 --> 00:01:30.723 can do mighty things. 24 00:01:32.823 --> 00:01:35.723 Those familiar words are so fitting for today. 25 00:01:36.723 --> 00:01:41.523 I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength 26 00:01:41.523 --> 00:01:43.323 believe in Jesus Christ 27 00:01:43.323 --> 00:01:44.723 my Lord or come to him. 28 00:01:45.723 --> 00:01:49.523 But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel. So yes, it's an easy answer for them. How is it that we hear each of us in our own native language? It is the Spirit God's Spirit. The 29 00:01:59.823 --> 00:02:01.723 Spirit the spirit of Jesus. 30 00:02:05.023 --> 00:02:09.723 So we have languages listed out for us, there of the different people 31 00:02:09.723 --> 00:02:12.023 dwelling in Jerusalem that day. And for a moment I want to take sometime to focus on these languages. And I am going to start with a 32 00:02:18.323 --> 00:02:19.623 question, that might seem simple but perhaps it's actually not really as 33 00:02:22.723 --> 00:02:24.923 simple when we think about it. 34 00:02:26.423 --> 00:02:31.523 What are the languages that are spoken where God has placed you? 35 00:02:33.523 --> 00:02:37.723 Now for a number of us, it seems like there is some real low hanging fruit here. 36 00:02:37.923 --> 00:02:39.723 English 37 00:02:39.723 --> 00:02:44.223 that seems to be the primary language, where we are placed, although 38 00:02:44.223 --> 00:02:47.423 there are a variety of languages in different places. 39 00:02:49.623 --> 00:02:56.023 But I would have you reflect a little bit deeper upon that. Because even 40 00:02:56.023 --> 00:03:01.123 though there may be a linguistic commonality with the language that is 41 00:03:01.123 --> 00:03:07.223 spoken there, there are different tenors that are also spoken of that 42 00:03:07.223 --> 00:03:12.523 language. And for a moment I reflect back on Dr. Nielsen of a couple of weeks ago, when he was 43 00:03:13.123 --> 00:03:17.423 about the Ethiopian eunuch and he asked us, the question who is in the 44 00:03:17.423 --> 00:03:17.923 chariot? 45 00:03:19.023 --> 00:03:21.423 I would actually pose another question to that. 46 00:03:22.823 --> 00:03:26.423 What language does the person in the chariot speak? 47 00:03:27.723 --> 00:03:29.323 Because there are different languages. 48 00:03:31.023 --> 00:03:32.523 There's the language of the farmer. 49 00:03:33.823 --> 00:03:38.623 And then there's the language of the business professional. There is 50 00:03:38.623 --> 00:03:40.223 the language of the teacher. 51 00:03:41.423 --> 00:03:44.823 And then there's also the language of the student. 52 00:03:44.823 --> 00:03:49.423 There is the language of the academic professional and then there is 53 00:03:49.423 --> 00:03:52.923 the language of the elementary school child. 54 00:03:52.923 --> 00:03:56.123 There is the language of the elder 55 00:03:57.023 --> 00:03:58.623 and the language of the preschooler. 56 00:04:00.823 --> 00:04:03.623 Language of the lonely 57 00:04:04.923 --> 00:04:07.023 and the language of the popular. 58 00:04:08.323 --> 00:04:10.023 The language of the traditional. 59 00:04:11.323 --> 00:04:13.723 Ehe language of the contextual. 60 00:04:15.523 --> 00:04:17.823 The language of the one who is regular 61 00:04:19.523 --> 00:04:23.223 and the language of the one that is not so regular. 62 00:04:24.723 --> 00:04:26.523 The language of the stellar 63 00:04:28.023 --> 00:04:30.723 and the language of the struggling. 64 00:04:32.223 --> 00:04:36.123 And I would actually encourage you because this is not a comprehensive 65 00:04:36.123 --> 00:04:42.223 list by any means to think for a few moments about where God places 66 00:04:42.223 --> 00:04:42.523 you. 67 00:04:43.823 --> 00:04:49.323 What are some of these tenors of that language that are spoken there? 68 00:04:51.723 --> 00:04:54.023 In fact, I would actually encourage you to do something that I've 69 00:04:54.023 --> 00:04:54.323 heard 70 00:04:54.323 --> 00:04:57.623 Doctor Saleska talk about a number of times over many years. 71 00:04:58.923 --> 00:04:59.723 Stop. 72 00:05:01.323 --> 00:05:02.423 Slow down. 73 00:05:04.223 --> 00:05:05.223 Listen. 74 00:05:06.623 --> 00:05:14.923 Listen to the languages of the place where God places you. There is a 75 00:05:14.923 --> 00:05:18.223 vital importance of learning the language that best engages those 76 00:05:19.823 --> 00:05:22.323 who are speaking the variety of languages. 77 00:05:23.123 --> 00:05:26.723 In fact there is an old saying one that I have used a number of times on 78 00:05:26.723 --> 00:05:28.623 myself, but also toward others. 79 00:05:28.623 --> 00:05:35.223 God gave us two ears and one mouth and we should probably use them in 80 00:05:35.223 --> 00:05:37.923 the proper proportion that he gave them to us with. 81 00:05:39.423 --> 00:05:40.523 Two ears. 82 00:05:40.523 --> 00:05:41.823 One mouth. 83 00:05:43.023 --> 00:05:43.923 Listening 84 00:05:43.923 --> 00:05:45.623 perhaps twice 85 00:05:45.623 --> 00:05:46.923 as much as we would speak. 86 00:05:46.923 --> 00:05:49.023 There is perhaps a bit of wisdom there. 87 00:05:51.023 --> 00:05:55.923 And learning the languages spoken where God places you helps to 88 00:05:55.923 --> 00:06:00.823 facilitate the sharing of the message of the good news where God and 89 00:06:00.823 --> 00:06:05.323 His Spirit then go forth and do their work through those languages. 90 00:06:09.023 --> 00:06:12.323 Now as important as these languages are. 91 00:06:14.223 --> 00:06:19.023 It's also important to reflect that they are not the main point of 92 00:06:19.023 --> 00:06:21.123 this reading today from Acts 2. 93 00:06:21.123 --> 00:06:25.823 They are not the main point of the day of Pentecost some two thousand 94 00:06:25.823 --> 00:06:29.923 years ago and they are still not the main point for us today. 95 00:06:31.523 --> 00:06:33.823 Yes, the languages are important 96 00:06:35.423 --> 00:06:42.123 but only in that they serve as a platform. A platform to bring people 97 00:06:42.123 --> 00:06:46.023 to the message of the good news that God has given to them. 98 00:06:46.023 --> 00:06:51.123 That there is a name upon which they can call that they may be saved 99 00:06:51.123 --> 00:06:55.423 as our reading ended today. And it's a reminder to us that yes, the 100 00:06:55.423 --> 00:06:58.023 languages may be important but they are 101 00:06:58.023 --> 00:07:00.023 God's means. 102 00:07:00.023 --> 00:07:05.323 God's means of bringing the message of the one whom God sent to those who 103 00:07:05.323 --> 00:07:06.123 are listening. 104 00:07:07.423 --> 00:07:09.723 Point to Jesus. 105 00:07:11.323 --> 00:07:15.923 His is the name by which all of those who are speaking 106 00:07:15.923 --> 00:07:18.323 those languages have hope. 107 00:07:19.123 --> 00:07:23.223 It's the hope of those who speak that variety of languages, just as it 108 00:07:23.223 --> 00:07:26.423 is, the hope that God continues to give you here 109 00:07:26.423 --> 00:07:32.123 still today. It is, by his suffering, his death, and his resurrection 110 00:07:32.123 --> 00:07:33.023 for them 111 00:07:33.023 --> 00:07:38.223 and for you, that hearing takes place. That the proclaimed word, then 112 00:07:38.223 --> 00:07:40.023 takes root and the spirit 113 00:07:40.023 --> 00:07:44.123 then grows and produces the fruit of faith in those who hear that 114 00:07:44.123 --> 00:07:44.423 message. 115 00:07:46.623 --> 00:07:49.423 As you listen to those languages 116 00:07:51.023 --> 00:07:55.723 it's as though you are working to remove potential stumbling blocks to 117 00:07:55.723 --> 00:07:57.023 their hearing. 118 00:07:58.223 --> 00:08:03.623 Giving the spirit the platform to bring his good news and to do his 119 00:08:03.623 --> 00:08:04.923 good work in their life. 120 00:08:06.723 --> 00:08:09.723 So, no matter where you may be placed by God, 121 00:08:11.423 --> 00:08:12.123 Listen. 122 00:08:14.023 --> 00:08:15.223 Learn the language. 123 00:08:17.323 --> 00:08:18.723 And then finally as Peter 124 00:08:18.723 --> 00:08:22.823 did that day speak, open your mouth and speak of the one. 125 00:08:23.823 --> 00:08:24.623 So listen 126 00:08:25.723 --> 00:08:28.923 and learn.
