WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.725 --> 00:00:02.325 Grace, mercy, and peace 2 00:00:02.425 --> 00:00:05.925 be to you from God, our Father and our Lord, and our savior Jesus, the 3 00:00:05.925 --> 00:00:06.525 Christ. 4 00:00:07.225 --> 00:00:07.525 Amen. 5 00:00:08.825 --> 00:00:12.225 When I first got news that I was going to be preaching on this text 6 00:00:12.325 --> 00:00:15.525 and after reading the first few verses, I was pretty sure I knew 7 00:00:15.525 --> 00:00:16.825 right, where I was going. 8 00:00:17.325 --> 00:00:19.125 It all seemed pretty laid out to me. 9 00:00:19.625 --> 00:00:23.625 God sent the son into the world to become sin for us. 10 00:00:24.225 --> 00:00:27.125 And so that we might become the righteousness of God. 11 00:00:27.325 --> 00:00:30.125 The son, then sends his ambassadors. 12 00:00:30.525 --> 00:00:34.225 His disciples, his preachers to proclaim 13 00:00:34.225 --> 00:00:39.125 the good news. Behold now is the day of salvation. 14 00:00:40.125 --> 00:00:43.425 When I first read the text articles four on five of the Augsburg 15 00:00:43.425 --> 00:00:48.425 Confession, seem to be jumping right off the page. Article 4 human 16 00:00:48.425 --> 00:00:53.425 beings, cannot be justified by their own power strengths or works, but 17 00:00:53.425 --> 00:00:57.525 they are freely justified as a gift on account of Christ through 18 00:00:57.525 --> 00:00:58.125 faith. 19 00:00:59.025 --> 00:00:59.825 Article 5. 20 00:01:00.425 --> 00:01:05.325 So that we might obtain that Faith, the office of preaching the gospel 21 00:01:05.525 --> 00:01:08.725 and administering the sacraments was instituted. 22 00:01:09.625 --> 00:01:14.625 And with that I was taken back to my first semester of my first year 23 00:01:15.025 --> 00:01:17.225 to Intro to Systematics. 24 00:01:17.925 --> 00:01:19.225 You remember that class 25 00:01:19.225 --> 00:01:21.925 don't you? Your first pass fails. 26 00:01:22.225 --> 00:01:26.325 Your first case studies. That class may have left you a little 27 00:01:26.325 --> 00:01:31.125 perturbed and maybe even a little distraught maybe even haunted your 28 00:01:31.125 --> 00:01:36.525 Daydreams in your other classes but then it began to make sense. 29 00:01:36.925 --> 00:01:38.825 One lecture at a time, one. 30 00:01:38.925 --> 00:01:39.025 One 31 00:01:39.025 --> 00:01:41.625 plenary, at a time. In that class 32 00:01:41.625 --> 00:01:43.425 we learned that the story of the scriptures. 33 00:01:43.425 --> 00:01:50.325 The story of everything is a story of God speaking to and through his 34 00:01:50.325 --> 00:01:55.425 people. We learned that God's baptized people or deputized. 35 00:01:55.625 --> 00:01:58.425 They've been given the content of the Christian witness and are called 36 00:01:58.425 --> 00:02:00.925 to make that witness to the world. 37 00:02:00.925 --> 00:02:04.725 And that all of God's people, especially his pastors 38 00:02:05.325 --> 00:02:08.525 have been authorized deputized to speak 39 00:02:09.025 --> 00:02:13.525 on behalf of God. And here's where the rubber meets the road. 40 00:02:14.025 --> 00:02:20.825 We don't just talk about God, we talk for God. We make promises in 41 00:02:20.825 --> 00:02:25.925 God's name, and with God's authority, and God's people, especially his 42 00:02:25.925 --> 00:02:31.525 pastors have been given the task to not just talk about the gospel 43 00:02:31.925 --> 00:02:36.325 but to do the gospel to people full blast. 44 00:02:37.725 --> 00:02:41.525 So it all seemed pretty laid out to me, but then I kept reading 45 00:02:42.125 --> 00:02:44.025 because Paul kept writing. 46 00:02:45.325 --> 00:02:51.525 Paul begins to talk about obstacles about suffering and weakness and 47 00:02:51.525 --> 00:02:54.925 how appearances aren't always what they seem. 48 00:02:56.625 --> 00:03:00.425 Paul had a long and challenging relationship with the Corinthian 49 00:03:00.425 --> 00:03:01.325 congregation. 50 00:03:01.925 --> 00:03:03.525 By the time, he wrote first Corinthians 51 00:03:03.525 --> 00:03:07.125 it seems that his Apostolic legitimacy was already being questioned by 52 00:03:07.125 --> 00:03:07.925 the church. 53 00:03:08.625 --> 00:03:10.425 By the time, he wrote second Corinthians 54 00:03:10.425 --> 00:03:15.325 the matter had gotten far worse. Between the writing of the two letters 55 00:03:15.325 --> 00:03:16.925 that we have in the New Testament 56 00:03:16.925 --> 00:03:21.625 Paul had a painful visit to Corinth where one individual openly 57 00:03:21.625 --> 00:03:23.925 resisted his authority publicly. 58 00:03:26.225 --> 00:03:30.625 He had planned another visit to Corinth, but he canceled those plans 59 00:03:30.925 --> 00:03:33.125 and sent his co-Apostle Titus 60 00:03:33.325 --> 00:03:34.125 instead. 61 00:03:34.625 --> 00:03:39.125 It seems that the church had tentatively reconciled with the apostle. 62 00:03:40.825 --> 00:03:45.125 But from what we learn in 2nd Corinthians about all of Paul's 63 00:03:45.125 --> 00:03:49.725 justifications of his ministry, it seems that people there were less 64 00:03:49.725 --> 00:03:51.125 than trusting of him. 65 00:03:52.125 --> 00:03:53.725 To make matters worse 66 00:03:53.725 --> 00:03:59.325 some so-called super Apostles, had risen up to invalidate Paul's 67 00:03:59.625 --> 00:04:00.325 Ministry. 68 00:04:01.425 --> 00:04:06.725 They actually saw in his suffering, a sign of God's Divine, rejection 69 00:04:07.125 --> 00:04:08.125 and judgement. 70 00:04:09.525 --> 00:04:13.225 In our text this morning Paul and his Co apostles see themselves as 71 00:04:13.225 --> 00:04:21.325 imposters as unknown as dying and as being disciplined by God. Four 72 00:04:21.325 --> 00:04:24.725 times in his letter, he gives examples of his Apostolic suffering. 73 00:04:24.725 --> 00:04:29.125 So in a sense, can you blame these so-called super Apostles? 74 00:04:29.925 --> 00:04:35.025 Paul's Apostolic resume reads like the diary of a common criminal. 75 00:04:36.025 --> 00:04:41.825 Imprisoned, flogged, starved made to do hard labor. 76 00:04:43.925 --> 00:04:48.625 But appearances aren't always what they seem. Hidden in 77 00:04:48.625 --> 00:04:54.425 Paul's cruciform weakness and witness was God's powerful presence and 78 00:04:54.425 --> 00:04:55.125 peace. 79 00:04:55.325 --> 00:05:00.825 Paul's cruciform life was not a result of a Divine curse, but a clear 80 00:05:00.825 --> 00:05:05.425 example of how God makes his power known through his weak and 81 00:05:05.425 --> 00:05:07.425 suffering, disciples. 82 00:05:08.225 --> 00:05:10.225 And Paul was no exception. 83 00:05:11.025 --> 00:05:15.625 In fact, Paul would boast in nothing less than his weaknesses. 84 00:05:15.825 --> 00:05:18.725 He recounts the time when he was caught up into the third heaven, 85 00:05:18.825 --> 00:05:22.825 whether in the body or out of the body, he does not know and to keep 86 00:05:22.825 --> 00:05:24.725 him from becoming conceited. 87 00:05:24.825 --> 00:05:26.925 A thorn was sent to him in the flesh. 88 00:05:26.925 --> 00:05:30.125 A messenger of Satan. Three times 89 00:05:30.125 --> 00:05:32.025 he pleaded that it might be taken away. 90 00:05:32.125 --> 00:05:33.925 But God's reply was clear. 91 00:05:34.725 --> 00:05:39.825 My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in 92 00:05:39.825 --> 00:05:40.625 weakness. 93 00:05:42.525 --> 00:05:46.725 God makes his power known through his weak and suffering, disciples 94 00:05:47.425 --> 00:05:50.925 and Paul like his Lord was no exception. 95 00:05:52.325 --> 00:05:57.125 And this is where you and I come in as you and I are called to imitate 96 00:05:57.125 --> 00:06:00.725 Paul just as he imitates Christ. 97 00:06:02.525 --> 00:06:06.425 It is, though, always a perennial temptation to want to rise above 98 00:06:06.425 --> 00:06:09.225 that cruciform, weakness, and witness. 99 00:06:09.925 --> 00:06:13.025 We're just fine with the fact that Jesus went to the Cross. 100 00:06:13.425 --> 00:06:16.125 We're actually profoundly thankful that he did. 101 00:06:16.925 --> 00:06:19.125 We would just rather not. 102 00:06:20.325 --> 00:06:22.525 Peter's temptation is like ours as well. 103 00:06:23.225 --> 00:06:28.325 We went to stay on the mountaintop making tents for Moses and Elijah 104 00:06:28.825 --> 00:06:34.025 and shirk our responsibilities to come down and bear and go the way of 105 00:06:34.025 --> 00:06:34.825 the cross. 106 00:06:36.525 --> 00:06:40.625 I think this temptation is especially present in this community, as we 107 00:06:40.625 --> 00:06:45.625 draw closer and closer to Call Day. One Theologian brings us to the 108 00:06:45.625 --> 00:06:48.225 very heart of this temptation for pastors. 109 00:06:48.625 --> 00:06:52.125 But I think what he says, for pastors, applies to all of us here, 110 00:06:52.625 --> 00:06:55.725 those training, for the office of the ministry, for those soon-to-be, 111 00:06:55.725 --> 00:06:59.525 Vicars for the soon-to-be deaconesses, and the support staff and 112 00:06:59.525 --> 00:07:00.825 professors here as well. 113 00:07:02.425 --> 00:07:07.925 He writes do not let the Pastoral Ministry morph into simple 114 00:07:08.125 --> 00:07:10.525 leisurely professionalism. 115 00:07:11.625 --> 00:07:17.025 The proclaiming task with all that, it entails cannot be forsaken 116 00:07:17.025 --> 00:07:17.625 for God. 117 00:07:19.625 --> 00:07:25.525 This text from Paul awakens us, from our daydreams, as Call Day 118 00:07:25.525 --> 00:07:29.725 approaches. You know, some of those Daydreams, right? 119 00:07:30.725 --> 00:07:34.425 The daydream of that giant parsonage that you get to change what you 120 00:07:34.425 --> 00:07:38.925 need as you need without much help or assistance from the trustees, or 121 00:07:38.925 --> 00:07:42.525 property board. Or not too picky 122 00:07:42.925 --> 00:07:46.325 how about just a hefty housing allowance in a not so hot market. 123 00:07:48.925 --> 00:07:53.925 The daydream of finally sitting down on call night and opening your 124 00:07:53.925 --> 00:07:54.725 call documents 125 00:07:54.725 --> 00:07:59.025 so quickly that you get to the most important page of all compensation 126 00:07:59.025 --> 00:08:00.125 information. 127 00:08:03.125 --> 00:08:08.325 That you pass over the first two pages that describe and define what 128 00:08:08.325 --> 00:08:10.925 you're actually called to do in this office 129 00:08:11.325 --> 00:08:17.425 and in this context. Or maybe for you soon-to-be Vicars, the day 130 00:08:17.425 --> 00:08:19.425 dream of being the vicar that 131 00:08:20.025 --> 00:08:25.425 every other vicar before-and-after is compared to. Being the vicar that 132 00:08:25.425 --> 00:08:28.125 everyone keeps mentioning for years to come. 133 00:08:29.825 --> 00:08:35.225 Or maybe that daydream were the words that you crave for validation 134 00:08:35.225 --> 00:08:35.925 and approval 135 00:08:35.925 --> 00:08:38.725 finally get spoken. Vicar, 136 00:08:39.425 --> 00:08:41.525 I think you're a better preacher than the pastor. 137 00:08:45.025 --> 00:08:52.125 You and I all day dream of simple, leisurely professionalism of making 138 00:08:52.125 --> 00:08:57.325 a name for ourselves of developing an enviable blossoming resume. 139 00:08:58.325 --> 00:08:59.625 But Paul chastens 140 00:08:59.625 --> 00:09:00.725 these desires. 141 00:09:01.925 --> 00:09:04.925 Imitate me as I imitate Christ. 142 00:09:06.125 --> 00:09:11.125 Cross comes before resurrection and suffering comes before glory. 143 00:09:12.925 --> 00:09:16.225 But if this is all the case, why bother? 144 00:09:18.025 --> 00:09:20.325 For those of you planning on entering into the office of the Holy 145 00:09:20.325 --> 00:09:21.025 Ministry. 146 00:09:21.525 --> 00:09:22.425 Why do you say here 147 00:09:22.425 --> 00:09:27.525 am I send me? To a world that finds your cruciform weakness and witness 148 00:09:27.525 --> 00:09:29.525 foolishness and backwards. 149 00:09:30.925 --> 00:09:35.725 For those of you training to be deaconesses,. Why train to bring acts 150 00:09:35.725 --> 00:09:40.625 of mercy and care and love and support to a world filled 151 00:09:40.625 --> 00:09:45.925 with unending violence, destruction, and pain that has no desire to 152 00:09:45.925 --> 00:09:46.525 change? 153 00:09:48.325 --> 00:09:52.325 For those of you who work on behalf of this, Seminary, professors and 154 00:09:52.325 --> 00:09:53.025 staff. 155 00:09:53.725 --> 00:09:57.225 Why do you give of your time, your talents, your efforts and your 156 00:09:57.225 --> 00:09:57.825 gifts? 157 00:09:58.925 --> 00:10:02.125 For what some of our friends in the world, might just call a 158 00:10:02.125 --> 00:10:04.025 faith-based fraud. 159 00:10:07.625 --> 00:10:08.425 You know why? 160 00:10:10.025 --> 00:10:10.925 You know it well. 161 00:10:12.325 --> 00:10:15.425 Because there are actually things that matter. 162 00:10:17.125 --> 00:10:21.325 Christ his Gospel, his church, 163 00:10:22.425 --> 00:10:23.225 his world. 164 00:10:25.125 --> 00:10:27.925 There are actually things worthe suffering for. 165 00:10:29.125 --> 00:10:34.725 And there are actually things worth dying for because there are things 166 00:10:34.725 --> 00:10:38.525 that need to be said and things that need to be proclaimed to the 167 00:10:38.525 --> 00:10:39.325 world. 168 00:10:40.525 --> 00:10:48.825 And so it's our job now, actually our joy to proclaim and live out his 169 00:10:48.825 --> 00:10:49.525 truth. 170 00:10:50.325 --> 00:10:54.625 His law and his gospel, his commands and his promises with courage, 171 00:10:54.625 --> 00:10:59.825 charity and love no matter what comes. Whether it be sadness or 172 00:10:59.825 --> 00:11:05.125 loneliness loss of reputation and honor both outside and even inside 173 00:11:05.125 --> 00:11:05.825 the church. 174 00:11:06.725 --> 00:11:09.925 Loss of membership and fighting with your ministry 175 00:11:09.925 --> 00:11:15.625 team. Maybe even imprisonment or just a resume that leaves much to be 176 00:11:15.625 --> 00:11:16.425 desired. 177 00:11:17.525 --> 00:11:22.325 You do it all because hidden ain your cruciform weakness 178 00:11:22.325 --> 00:11:27.525 and witness is your God's powerful presence and peace. 179 00:11:29.125 --> 00:11:34.525 So this morning, I promise you in the name of Jesus, he who knew no 180 00:11:34.525 --> 00:11:39.725 sin became sin for you, so that you might be declared the 181 00:11:39.725 --> 00:11:41.725 righteousness of God. 182 00:11:42.625 --> 00:11:47.025 I promise you that God in Christ is still reconciling this world to 183 00:11:47.025 --> 00:11:52.425 himself even now when the groans of this creation seemed to be echoing 184 00:11:52.425 --> 00:11:55.925 and reverberating all the more loudly every day. 185 00:11:57.325 --> 00:12:03.725 I promise you God in Christ has made you his own, he forgives you all 186 00:12:03.725 --> 00:12:04.725 of your sins. 187 00:12:05.125 --> 00:12:09.025 He loves you more than you could even ever love yourself. 188 00:12:09.925 --> 00:12:10.925 He will be with you. 189 00:12:11.525 --> 00:12:12.525 He will strengthen you. 190 00:12:12.525 --> 00:12:13.625 He will equip you. 191 00:12:14.125 --> 00:12:18.325 He will listen to you and help you in every time of need. 192 00:12:19.725 --> 00:12:26.125 Trust these promises cling to them, live them proclaim them, do them 193 00:12:27.125 --> 00:12:33.425 to a broken world filled with shattered lives and hurting hearts. 194 00:12:35.525 --> 00:12:40.125 I'll give you one last promise to accompany you on your Lenten journey 195 00:12:40.425 --> 00:12:42.225 and your journey home. 196 00:12:43.625 --> 00:12:47.725 I promise you, that appearances aren't always what they seem. 197 00:12:49.125 --> 00:12:54.025 Hidden in your cruciform weakness and witness is your God's powerful 198 00:12:54.025 --> 00:12:57.625 presence and his abiding in his gracious. 199 00:12:57.625 --> 00:13:00.125 Peace in Jesus name. 200 00:13:01.025 --> 00:13:01.425 Amen.
