WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.600 Go ahead and pull your hymnals out this morning. 2 00:00:02.600 --> 00:00:07.800 We're going to open up to page 323 for a moment. Something that I want 3 00:00:07.800 --> 00:00:11.700 to encourage you no matter what your station in life may be to have 4 00:00:11.700 --> 00:00:13.300 some words here memorized. 5 00:00:13.300 --> 00:00:16.800 One of the things that I would always tell my confirmation classes 6 00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:21.400 would be that anything they had to memorize I also had to memorize and 7 00:00:21.400 --> 00:00:23.700 you'd be surprised how many times they tried to catch me in. 8 00:00:23.700 --> 00:00:28.300 And so my encouragement is to memorize some things such as this we're going 9 00:00:28.300 --> 00:00:32.000 to look at the third article here for a moment. And I want to jump down 10 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:34.600 to Doctor Luther's meaning for just a moment. 11 00:00:35.900 --> 00:00:41.500 I believe that I cannot buy my own reason or strength believe in Jesus 12 00:00:41.500 --> 00:00:43.700 Christ my Lord or come to him. 13 00:00:44.600 --> 00:00:49.900 But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel enlightened me with 14 00:00:49.900 --> 00:00:54.300 his gift Sanctified and kept me in the true faith. 15 00:00:54.300 --> 00:00:59.500 And in that same way, he calls gathers enlightens and sanctifies the 16 00:00:59.500 --> 00:01:04.900 whole Christian Church on earth and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the 17 00:01:04.900 --> 00:01:07.100 one true faith. 18 00:01:08.300 --> 00:01:14.100 We cannot by our own ability come to believe in God. 19 00:01:14.100 --> 00:01:14.800 Dr. 20 00:01:14.800 --> 00:01:18.700 Luther make sure to point this out very clearly to us. 21 00:01:20.700 --> 00:01:24.600 And yet then we get a reading like what we have today from Romans 22 00:01:24.600 --> 00:01:27.100 chapter 4 whereas you're going through there. 23 00:01:27.100 --> 00:01:31.900 There are three words that then stand out almost jumped out to grab 24 00:01:31.900 --> 00:01:32.200 our attention. 25 00:01:34.700 --> 00:01:37.500 Abraham believed God. 26 00:01:39.500 --> 00:01:43.300 epis toison de Abraham torcedor. 27 00:01:45.300 --> 00:01:53.900 Abraham believed God. A simple and yet profound statement with a great 28 00:01:53.900 --> 00:01:55.500 deal of depth to it. 29 00:01:56.700 --> 00:02:01.400 Abram a man, who in his old age had been called by God to leave his 30 00:02:01.400 --> 00:02:05.600 family to leave his inheritance and then to go off to a land that God 31 00:02:05.600 --> 00:02:11.300 would show to him. Who would later on be told by God that God would be 32 00:02:11.300 --> 00:02:14.200 his great shield and great reward. 33 00:02:15.800 --> 00:02:19.100 Abram realized at that point that there was a problem. 34 00:02:20.400 --> 00:02:25.800 He was an elderly man beyond 75 years of age his wife Sarah had not 35 00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:28.000 shown any ability to bear children. 36 00:02:30.100 --> 00:02:35.000 And he was told by God that his descendants would out number the stars. 37 00:02:36.300 --> 00:02:41.100 And then we have that simple yet profound statement. 38 00:02:42.500 --> 00:02:45.600 Abram believed God. 39 00:02:47.100 --> 00:02:52.200 Now for a moment it is worth considering the context for Abram their. 40 00:02:52.200 --> 00:02:58.200 Think about Abram and his relationship with God and what background 41 00:02:58.200 --> 00:03:00.700 he might have had with this God 42 00:03:00.700 --> 00:03:05.200 who made such a promise to him. This all happens in at in Genesis 43 00:03:05.200 --> 00:03:08.900 chapter 15, where were told that Abram believed God and it was 44 00:03:08.900 --> 00:03:12.900 counted to him as righteousness. Just a few chapters previously in 45 00:03:12.900 --> 00:03:17.300 chapter 12th God had called Abram to leave his family to leave his 46 00:03:17.300 --> 00:03:20.600 inheritance to go to a land that God would show him. 47 00:03:20.600 --> 00:03:25.800 There are a few misadventures that happen after that. Until finally 48 00:03:25.800 --> 00:03:30.200 Abram is back in the land and God tells him I am your shield your 49 00:03:30.200 --> 00:03:31.900 reward will be very great. 50 00:03:31.900 --> 00:03:33.800 Abram says wait a minute God 51 00:03:33.800 --> 00:03:34.700 there's a problem. 52 00:03:34.700 --> 00:03:37.200 I have no heir. 53 00:03:37.200 --> 00:03:39.600 Eleazar is going to be my heir. 54 00:03:40.500 --> 00:03:45.500 God tells him no it is one who is coming from your own body who will 55 00:03:45.500 --> 00:03:49.700 receive your inheritance and go out and count the stars in the sky 56 00:03:49.700 --> 00:03:54.000 if you can for that will be how many your descendants will be. 57 00:03:56.900 --> 00:04:00.900 Seems that Abram had a few moments of trying to figure out what 58 00:04:00.900 --> 00:04:03.500 believing God would look like. 59 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:08.600 Abram responds to this challenge 60 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:11.400 that he would believe the Lord. 61 00:04:12.700 --> 00:04:16.500 And that God would count such belief as righteousness. 62 00:04:19.100 --> 00:04:26.100 Abram did not have a great deal of information about this God upon 63 00:04:26.100 --> 00:04:28.100 which to base his faith. 64 00:04:29.200 --> 00:04:34.600 If you think of it in the contacts and perhaps in contrast to us Abram 65 00:04:34.600 --> 00:04:40.700 would have had at most, orally most likely, the first 11 chapters of our 66 00:04:40.700 --> 00:04:44.300 entire Bible as his history of this God. 67 00:04:46.700 --> 00:04:51.900 That seems rather profound you consider that we in our day and age have 68 00:04:51.900 --> 00:04:57.500 an entire book filled with God's actions in this world. Filled with God 69 00:04:57.500 --> 00:05:01.900 making his promise and then us being able to read about the 70 00:05:01.900 --> 00:05:05.000 fulfillment of those promises. In many any respects 71 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:09.200 it might seem like we're in a far better place than Abram was when it 72 00:05:09.200 --> 00:05:13.200 comes to believe in God because we have a greater volume of 73 00:05:13.200 --> 00:05:15.800 information and a bigger record of it. 74 00:05:16.800 --> 00:05:22.100 Then we finally have God speaking to us through his own Son crucified 75 00:05:22.100 --> 00:05:25.200 for us risen from the dead and ascended into heaven. 76 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:31.200 So it might be tempting to say yeah, we have it a bit easier when it 77 00:05:31.200 --> 00:05:32.500 comes to believing God. 78 00:05:32.500 --> 00:05:36.600 We simply have more upon which we could base it. 79 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:44.600 And yet I would dare say that does not change the challenge of believing 80 00:05:44.600 --> 00:05:45.000 God. 81 00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:50.300 Because God calls us to believe. 82 00:05:52.100 --> 00:05:53.900 In reality the unbelievable. 83 00:05:55.100 --> 00:06:00.300 For Abram a man who 75 years old you will have a child. 84 00:06:02.200 --> 00:06:03.800 An unbelievable thing. 85 00:06:05.300 --> 00:06:10.000 And yet God cracks through even in someone like Abram to say. 86 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:11.500 yes, you can believe this. 87 00:06:13.300 --> 00:06:19.100 You consider the central elements of our faith as Christians. God 88 00:06:19.100 --> 00:06:24.600 himself entering into human flesh coming down to bear the weight of 89 00:06:24.600 --> 00:06:29.300 all of sin, all of the wrong of the world on himself on the cross 90 00:06:29.300 --> 00:06:35.800 then raising himself back to life and say that now in that now impacts 91 00:06:35.800 --> 00:06:39.600 every single person who lives in this world. 92 00:06:42.200 --> 00:06:47.100 That truly is something that is unbelievable. 93 00:06:47.100 --> 00:06:52.100 Perhaps something that we would be do well to keep in mind when we go 94 00:06:52.100 --> 00:06:57.700 out and tell people about this because it is rather unbelievable. 95 00:07:01.300 --> 00:07:03.900 That's why we need something like the article 96 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:07.500 and the meaning and the Holy Spirit. 97 00:07:08.500 --> 00:07:13.000 I cannot buy my own reason or strength 98 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:17.100 believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him. 99 00:07:18.600 --> 00:07:24.200 God calls us to believe in the unbelievable and so it doesn't matter 100 00:07:24.200 --> 00:07:30.300 the volume of information it still requires God being the one to come 101 00:07:30.300 --> 00:07:34.700 in and break through and call us to believe that which is 102 00:07:34.700 --> 00:07:35.700 unbelievable. 103 00:07:35.700 --> 00:07:41.000 He himself steps in to create that belief so that we can cling and 104 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:46.400 receive the things that God promises. More information does not Inspire 105 00:07:46.400 --> 00:07:47.200 belief. 106 00:07:48.400 --> 00:07:53.400 It is the spirit doing its work through that Word of God. 107 00:07:54.600 --> 00:07:59.700 That's why the best thing I can do today is to encourage you to 108 00:07:59.700 --> 00:08:03.600 regularly be in engagement with God's Word. 109 00:08:03.600 --> 00:08:05.200 Yes for many of you 110 00:08:05.200 --> 00:08:10.900 it is a somewhat academic focus at this time and yet that devotional 111 00:08:10.900 --> 00:08:15.600 component of continuing to let that Spirit work through that word in 112 00:08:15.600 --> 00:08:19.500 you is undeniably necessary and powerful. 113 00:08:20.900 --> 00:08:26.100 God's spirit continues to do his work guiding you so that the same 114 00:08:26.100 --> 00:08:30.900 thing can be said about you that was said of Abram you believed God. 115 00:08:32.100 --> 00:08:34.299 But toward that and I want to ask you once again 116 00:08:34.299 --> 00:08:38.100 take out your hymnals open up to the inside of the front cover. 117 00:08:39.400 --> 00:08:41.100 I'm going to ask you to stand with me. 118 00:08:44.100 --> 00:08:48.600 We're simply going to ask that God would continue to do his work upon 119 00:08:48.600 --> 00:08:53.100 his word which is spoken and proclaimed to us. I am going to ask you to pray 120 00:08:53.100 --> 00:08:56.500 with me the prayer for Blessing on the Word at the bottom of the page. 121 00:08:56.500 --> 00:08:57.700 We pray. 122 00:08:58.600 --> 00:09:04.700 Lord God bless your word wherever it is proclaimed make it a word of 123 00:09:04.700 --> 00:09:10.700 power and peace to convert those not yet your own and to confirm those 124 00:09:10.700 --> 00:09:12.900 who have come to saving Faith. 125 00:09:12.900 --> 00:09:18.600 May your word pass from the ear to the heart from the heart to the lip 126 00:09:18.600 --> 00:09:24.200 and from the lip to the life that as you have promised your word may 127 00:09:24.200 --> 00:09:28.300 achieve the purpose for which you send it. Through Jesus Christ 128 00:09:28.300 --> 00:09:33.200 my Lord. Amen. I invite you to remain standing as we join in singing or 129 00:09:33.200 --> 00:09:35.700 Canticle the Benedictus on page 226.
