WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.725 --> 00:00:03.425 Getting into one of the boats which was Simons. 2 00:00:03.425 --> 00:00:08.225 He asked him to put out a little from the land, and he sat down and 3 00:00:08.225 --> 00:00:09.825 taught the people from the boat. 4 00:00:10.525 --> 00:00:14.025 This is our text. Dear friends in Christ 5 00:00:14.025 --> 00:00:14.625 Jesus. 6 00:00:17.225 --> 00:00:18.125 Long ago 7 00:00:18.825 --> 00:00:21.025 in a galaxy far, far away 8 00:00:22.725 --> 00:00:24.025 I was a vicar. 9 00:00:25.625 --> 00:00:30.825 And one of the jobs of the vicar was twice a year to go out and round 10 00:00:30.825 --> 00:00:34.825 up prospects for the upcoming pastors adult information class. 11 00:00:36.625 --> 00:00:42.325 I say round up because there were a lot of prospects and it was a big 12 00:00:42.325 --> 00:00:43.025 job. 13 00:00:44.225 --> 00:00:48.425 It meant making dozens and dozens of house calls on people who have 14 00:00:48.425 --> 00:00:51.425 had some sort of contact with the congregation over the last several 15 00:00:51.425 --> 00:00:52.025 years. 16 00:00:52.625 --> 00:00:54.725 None of whom the current vicar had ever met. 17 00:00:55.825 --> 00:01:00.625 And inviting them to come to the upcoming pastors adult information 18 00:01:00.625 --> 00:01:05.025 class. In short, to come to catechesis. 19 00:01:07.725 --> 00:01:11.125 Well, a couple of vicars before me had invited a fellow by the name 20 00:01:11.125 --> 00:01:13.125 of Joe Holton. 21 00:01:15.125 --> 00:01:21.325 Now, Joe had not been raised as a Christian and so consequently, when 22 00:01:21.325 --> 00:01:25.025 he became an adult, he had no use for Jesus or for the church. 23 00:01:26.725 --> 00:01:30.025 In fact, even after he'd married, his wife, who was a member of the 24 00:01:30.025 --> 00:01:36.025 congregation Joe studiously avoided going to church with her on Sunday 25 00:01:36.025 --> 00:01:36.525 morning. 26 00:01:38.725 --> 00:01:43.025 But then they started having children and for one reason or another he 27 00:01:43.025 --> 00:01:47.125 eventually went and checked out the church where his wife had grown 28 00:01:47.125 --> 00:01:47.425 up. 29 00:01:49.025 --> 00:01:53.625 And that's where the vicar came in and the catechesis that followed. 30 00:01:55.725 --> 00:01:59.325 In the pastor's class there Joe learned who Jesus was. 31 00:02:00.425 --> 00:02:04.225 And what he had done for him at Calvary and the empty tomb. 32 00:02:05.725 --> 00:02:07.925 And Joe started reading his Bible every day. 33 00:02:09.325 --> 00:02:11.525 He came to church and to the Divine service. 34 00:02:11.525 --> 00:02:16.125 He came to Bible study and eventually he was baptized into Christ. 35 00:02:19.025 --> 00:02:24.525 But then I was also in his early 30s, that Joe learned that he had 36 00:02:24.525 --> 00:02:25.125 cancer. 37 00:02:27.325 --> 00:02:29.525 That was the year that I was the vicar. 38 00:02:32.225 --> 00:02:34.625 The cancer quickly, spread to his spine. 39 00:02:37.725 --> 00:02:41.925 His family was devastated because by now they had three small 40 00:02:41.925 --> 00:02:42.525 children. 41 00:02:44.125 --> 00:02:45.725 And none of his family 42 00:02:45.725 --> 00:02:46.325 his brothers, 43 00:02:46.325 --> 00:02:47.625 his sister's, his friends, 44 00:02:47.625 --> 00:02:51.125 his relatives could believe that all of this was happening to Joe. 45 00:02:54.825 --> 00:02:58.425 And yet they're in the midst of his suffering chose faith. 46 00:02:59.625 --> 00:03:02.425 Just grew brighter stronger. 47 00:03:03.625 --> 00:03:04.525 He had his Bible. 48 00:03:05.425 --> 00:03:07.325 He had the visitation of his pastor. 49 00:03:08.525 --> 00:03:12.625 And he pointed his friends and relatives who came to visit to Jesus 50 00:03:12.925 --> 00:03:17.225 and the cross and the empty tomb and what he had done for them, 51 00:03:17.425 --> 00:03:18.025 also. 52 00:03:20.425 --> 00:03:25.225 And on the day that he died, he gave his Pastor a small Bible. 53 00:03:26.925 --> 00:03:28.925 And inside the front cover, he wrote. 54 00:03:30.725 --> 00:03:32.525 To the man who showed me Jesus. 55 00:03:34.425 --> 00:03:35.025 Thank you. 56 00:03:39.025 --> 00:03:41.725 Catechesis is catching. 57 00:03:43.525 --> 00:03:48.425 Like the Nets in our text for this morning, the gospel caught Joe. 58 00:03:50.325 --> 00:03:55.725 It caught you and me, and that calls us to abandon everything and 59 00:03:55.725 --> 00:04:01.625 leave it behind to abandon ourselves and our ways of doing things. 60 00:04:03.225 --> 00:04:04.825 To follow Jesus. 61 00:04:06.025 --> 00:04:07.025 Even unto death. 62 00:04:10.825 --> 00:04:15.325 The problem is, however, when it comes to following or to fishing, as 63 00:04:15.325 --> 00:04:20.325 you may know, every fisherman has his own ways of doing it, his own 64 00:04:20.325 --> 00:04:21.025 methods. 65 00:04:22.625 --> 00:04:26.925 And like Peter and the men of Zebedee Incorporated, we too may 66 00:04:27.425 --> 00:04:29.925 figure that we know how to get the job done. 67 00:04:31.325 --> 00:04:35.225 And so, we go about fishing all night long, according to our own 68 00:04:35.225 --> 00:04:35.825 methods. 69 00:04:38.825 --> 00:04:39.925 Perhaps we are young. 70 00:04:41.925 --> 00:04:43.825 Fresh out of college here 71 00:04:44.125 --> 00:04:44.925 the Seminary. 72 00:04:47.125 --> 00:04:51.325 We are the brightest and the best that our church and our generation 73 00:04:51.325 --> 00:04:52.225 has to offer. 74 00:04:54.125 --> 00:04:57.525 We rely on that brightness, and that bestest. 75 00:04:59.625 --> 00:05:04.125 That winning personality, that youthful smile. 76 00:05:05.425 --> 00:05:09.125 And we know that, when they finally let us out of this place. 77 00:05:09.425 --> 00:05:11.425 We are going to knock them dead. 78 00:05:16.025 --> 00:05:21.425 Or maybe we're part of that older more mature, second career crowd. 79 00:05:23.225 --> 00:05:25.825 The guys have been around the block a few times. 80 00:05:26.625 --> 00:05:28.025 Way ahead of those younger guys 81 00:05:28.025 --> 00:05:29.125 in people skills. 82 00:05:30.725 --> 00:05:34.025 And we know what real people really need. 83 00:05:34.125 --> 00:05:34.425 Ya. 84 00:05:34.425 --> 00:05:37.125 We know that when they let us out of this place. 85 00:05:37.725 --> 00:05:40.425 We are definitely going to knock them dead. 86 00:05:44.425 --> 00:05:46.825 Or maybe we've been in the ministry for some time. 87 00:05:48.925 --> 00:05:52.325 We consider ourselves to be seasoned pastors. 88 00:05:54.825 --> 00:05:57.525 We've had our wings clipped more than once. 89 00:06:00.325 --> 00:06:04.625 And we know that life in these gray and latter days 90 00:06:04.725 --> 00:06:06.125 it can be at times 91 00:06:07.325 --> 00:06:08.525 rather frustrating. 92 00:06:10.525 --> 00:06:12.825 The congregation is often a mess. 93 00:06:14.125 --> 00:06:15.525 And we may have observed 94 00:06:15.525 --> 00:06:20.025 that the gospel just doesn't seem to do what it says 95 00:06:20.025 --> 00:06:22.425 it's going to do in our congregation. 96 00:06:24.325 --> 00:06:27.825 And so we may result to other methods. 97 00:06:29.825 --> 00:06:34.125 Perhaps guilting our congregation into action, some sort. 98 00:06:35.025 --> 00:06:39.125 Or manipulating them in some way to give money or to come to church 99 00:06:39.125 --> 00:06:42.525 more often or to be a part of whatever program it is, that we happen 100 00:06:42.525 --> 00:06:44.925 to have on our mind at the time. 101 00:06:47.225 --> 00:06:50.425 Yeah, although we may not have knocked them dead yet. 102 00:06:50.925 --> 00:06:52.625 It isn't because we haven't tried. 103 00:06:55.825 --> 00:07:01.425 Friends, the problem we have is a problem with the third commandment, 104 00:07:02.625 --> 00:07:03.725 with unbelief. 105 00:07:05.825 --> 00:07:09.425 We despise preaching and His word. 106 00:07:10.325 --> 00:07:13.625 Especially the word that comes out of our own mouths. 107 00:07:14.925 --> 00:07:19.825 We refuse to believe that the gospel will do and deliver what it 108 00:07:19.825 --> 00:07:20.725 promises. 109 00:07:22.825 --> 00:07:28.425 So instead we seek to get things done, according to our own methods 110 00:07:29.025 --> 00:07:33.625 toiling, all night long and coming up empty-handed. 111 00:07:37.325 --> 00:07:42.325 Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch says Jesus. 112 00:07:44.525 --> 00:07:45.225 Master, 113 00:07:46.325 --> 00:07:49.225 we toiled all night long, and got nothing. 114 00:07:52.025 --> 00:07:55.325 But at your word, I will let down the nets. 115 00:07:57.925 --> 00:07:59.125 At your word. 116 00:08:00.725 --> 00:08:06.625 That precious gospel word, that faith receives, and so believes. 117 00:08:09.025 --> 00:08:13.625 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish and 118 00:08:13.625 --> 00:08:14.825 their nets were breaking. 119 00:08:16.525 --> 00:08:19.725 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees. 120 00:08:19.725 --> 00:08:23.025 Saying depart from me for I am a sinful man, 121 00:08:23.025 --> 00:08:23.125 O 122 00:08:23.125 --> 00:08:23.625 Lord. 123 00:08:25.725 --> 00:08:26.925 Jesus said to him. 124 00:08:28.525 --> 00:08:29.725 Do not be afraid. 125 00:08:31.325 --> 00:08:34.525 From now on you will be catching men. 126 00:08:37.825 --> 00:08:39.125 Do not be afraid. 127 00:08:41.525 --> 00:08:44.625 Jesus speaks these words to you today. 128 00:08:46.225 --> 00:08:47.625 Do not be afraid. 129 00:08:49.225 --> 00:08:52.625 For all the times that you have tried to do it your own way 130 00:08:52.725 --> 00:08:56.025 Jesus has washed the clean with his blood. 131 00:08:57.125 --> 00:09:00.625 He has washed you in the waters of his baptism and in that font wash 132 00:09:00.625 --> 00:09:02.225 you and his blood forever. 133 00:09:03.625 --> 00:09:06.625 And here this morning as we heard in the Old Testament reading and 134 00:09:06.625 --> 00:09:08.725 like the coal that touched Isaiah's lips. 135 00:09:08.925 --> 00:09:13.725 So also he will touch you with his body and blood behold 136 00:09:13.725 --> 00:09:15.225 this has touched your lips. 137 00:09:16.325 --> 00:09:20.125 Your guilt is taken away your sin 138 00:09:21.325 --> 00:09:22.125 atoned for. 139 00:09:26.025 --> 00:09:31.025 The most amazing thing in Luke's, fishing story is not the miraculous 140 00:09:31.025 --> 00:09:32.025 catch of fish. 141 00:09:33.825 --> 00:09:39.025 But rather that Jesus would still have use for the likes of Peter and 142 00:09:39.025 --> 00:09:41.025 the men of Zebedee Incorporated. 143 00:09:43.225 --> 00:09:47.825 And that he would still have likes have used for the likes of you and 144 00:09:47.825 --> 00:09:49.725 me today. 145 00:09:53.925 --> 00:09:56.725 But he would call men of every age 146 00:09:58.125 --> 00:10:04.925 to cast the nets of gospel preaching into deep waters 147 00:10:08.125 --> 00:10:10.825 even when all evidence of fish catching potential, 148 00:10:11.925 --> 00:10:13.525 appear to be quite the contrary. 149 00:10:16.025 --> 00:10:18.925 And from the darkest portions of our world, 150 00:10:20.125 --> 00:10:27.725 and from our lives, he would bring forth a miraculous catch, a catch 151 00:10:28.625 --> 00:10:32.425 beyond any lowly fisherman's wildest expectations. 152 00:10:37.125 --> 00:10:40.425 Shortly after Joe died during my vicarage year 153 00:10:40.425 --> 00:10:45.425 I was sent out again to round up the next batch of prospects. 154 00:10:46.925 --> 00:10:49.925 And I don't remember anything about all of those calls. 155 00:10:51.625 --> 00:10:55.125 But I do remember, one thing, in particular about that adult 156 00:10:55.125 --> 00:10:56.325 information class. 157 00:10:57.925 --> 00:11:02.425 And that was that the Lord had certainly filled the nets. 158 00:11:04.425 --> 00:11:05.525 Because there in that class 159 00:11:05.525 --> 00:11:08.725 there were no less than a dozen new faces 160 00:11:09.825 --> 00:11:13.125 who were all connected to one family in particular. 161 00:11:14.925 --> 00:11:16.025 Joe's friends. 162 00:11:17.325 --> 00:11:18.225 Relatives. 163 00:11:20.025 --> 00:11:21.125 Yeah, there 164 00:11:22.225 --> 00:11:23.125 in the boat. 165 00:11:25.325 --> 00:11:25.825 Here 166 00:11:27.125 --> 00:11:28.025 in the Nave. 167 00:11:30.025 --> 00:11:33.025 Safe in Christchurch. 168 00:11:35.725 --> 00:11:37.725 In Jesus name. Amen. 169 00:11:40.325 --> 00:11:42.625 Peace of God, which surpasses all understanding. 170 00:11:42.625 --> 00:11:45.125 Keep your hearts and Minds in Christ Jesus. 171 00:11:45.725 --> 00:11:46.225 Amen.
