WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.025 --> 00:00:04.025 Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God, our Father and from our Lord 2 00:00:04.025 --> 00:00:05.725 and Savior Jesus Christ. 3 00:00:06.625 --> 00:00:07.125 Amen. 4 00:00:08.325 --> 00:00:10.025 This past fall 5 00:00:10.125 --> 00:00:16.625 my son Aiden was assigned for his freshman literature class in high 6 00:00:16.625 --> 00:00:19.425 school to read The Odyssey. 7 00:00:20.125 --> 00:00:27.125 And as I had never had the fortune of having that text assigned to me, 8 00:00:27.125 --> 00:00:32.525 when I was in school, I decided I would read it with him. 9 00:00:33.225 --> 00:00:37.825 I was amazed at the amazing parallels 10 00:00:38.125 --> 00:00:44.525 between on the one hand, Odysseus the hero of Homer's Epic. 11 00:00:46.725 --> 00:00:51.025 And the gospel of our own own Lord, Jesus Christ. 12 00:00:52.225 --> 00:00:57.725 You probably know the basic story of The Odyssey, which takes place 10 13 00:00:57.725 --> 00:01:00.925 years after the Trojan War. 14 00:01:00.925 --> 00:01:06.225 The subject of Homer's first masterpiece, The Iliad. The Odyssey 15 00:01:06.225 --> 00:01:11.725 tells the story of one soldier from that war named Odysseus, who left 16 00:01:11.725 --> 00:01:16.425 his expansive estate on the island of Ithaca and left 17 00:01:16.525 --> 00:01:23.625 His son and his wife as well. While Odysseus was gone over, 100 men 18 00:01:23.625 --> 00:01:31.325 gathered to woo Odysseus wife and even to threaten to take over 19 00:01:31.325 --> 00:01:34.425 Odysseus entire estate. 20 00:01:35.425 --> 00:01:44.525 Well, in chapter 14 of The Odyssey Book, 14, a stranger shows up to a 21 00:01:44.525 --> 00:01:46.325 man named. 22 00:01:46.425 --> 00:01:47.425 Eumaeus. 23 00:01:48.725 --> 00:01:54.425 Eumaeus was put in charge of Odysseus animals. 24 00:01:54.425 --> 00:01:57.425 His estate, especially his pigs. 25 00:01:57.625 --> 00:02:03.925 Eumaeus was a swineherder charged with taking care of Odysseus 26 00:02:03.925 --> 00:02:07.225 estate and this stranger Comes to Odysseus. 27 00:02:08.125 --> 00:02:13.025 Sorry, this Stranger Comes to Eumaeus and the stranger starts talking 28 00:02:13.025 --> 00:02:15.225 about Odysseus. 29 00:02:15.825 --> 00:02:17.225 Eumaeus master. 30 00:02:18.725 --> 00:02:23.325 And Eumaeus says these incredibly moving words. 31 00:02:23.725 --> 00:02:24.725 Never again 32 00:02:24.725 --> 00:02:26.225 shall I find a master 33 00:02:26.225 --> 00:02:32.325 so kind however, far I go, even if I were to come again to the house 34 00:02:32.325 --> 00:02:38.625 of my own father and mother. It's not for them, my own father and 35 00:02:38.625 --> 00:02:40.825 mother that I mourn so much 36 00:02:42.425 --> 00:02:45.925 as it is a longing for Odysseus. 37 00:02:47.425 --> 00:02:48.325 Odysseus 38 00:02:48.325 --> 00:02:49.625 who is gone. 39 00:02:50.625 --> 00:02:52.225 That's the morning 40 00:02:52.725 --> 00:02:54.925 that seizes me. 41 00:02:57.625 --> 00:03:01.825 As readers, we can easily identify with this 42 00:03:01.825 --> 00:03:08.325 Eumaeus guy. How many of us have had a loved one, leave us in some 43 00:03:08.325 --> 00:03:14.625 way and we have mourned for that, loved one. But much more 44 00:03:14.625 --> 00:03:18.625 I'm intrigued by the situation of Eumaeus 45 00:03:18.625 --> 00:03:20.525 who looks around at this grand 46 00:03:20.525 --> 00:03:23.225 estate that he's put been put in charge of. 47 00:03:25.025 --> 00:03:30.225 And he thinks if only the master of the estate would return. 48 00:03:31.225 --> 00:03:36.425 The master would put everything aright. 49 00:03:37.725 --> 00:03:42.625 And yet, he's simply not around. My dear friends 50 00:03:43.825 --> 00:03:44.825 look around you. 51 00:03:45.425 --> 00:03:48.725 It doesn't take long for us to list off 52 00:03:49.125 --> 00:03:55.025 the many things that are not right in our home here in St. 53 00:03:55.025 --> 00:03:58.725 Louis. Here in America. 54 00:03:59.925 --> 00:04:06.325 Here on this tiny, little globe that is floating through the vast 55 00:04:06.325 --> 00:04:07.825 expansive universe. 56 00:04:09.125 --> 00:04:12.625 Lots of things are not right. 57 00:04:13.425 --> 00:04:17.725 The pandemic continues to rage on news came yesterday of yet. 58 00:04:17.725 --> 00:04:20.425 more people lost, Two 59 00:04:20.425 --> 00:04:25.425 dearly beloved Brothers, in the Faith, Pastor Ingo Dutzsman 60 00:04:25.425 --> 00:04:30.725 longtime friend of this institution and alumni reunion 61 00:04:30.725 --> 00:04:32.025 representative. 62 00:04:32.825 --> 00:04:35.625 And District president, Timothy Yaden. 63 00:04:37.225 --> 00:04:38.725 Closed their eyes 64 00:04:40.025 --> 00:04:41.025 in Jesus. 65 00:04:42.225 --> 00:04:48.425 Politically, politically America continues to flip-flop from one leader 66 00:04:48.425 --> 00:04:49.325 to the next. 67 00:04:49.325 --> 00:04:54.725 We just can't seem to find our Odysseus who can put America back 68 00:04:54.725 --> 00:04:56.925 together again. To make matters 69 00:04:56.925 --> 00:04:57.425 worse 70 00:04:57.425 --> 00:05:01.825 our congregations are on the decline. And there are all sorts of 71 00:05:01.825 --> 00:05:09.325 cultural pressures pushing in on the pushing in, on our way of life. 72 00:05:10.225 --> 00:05:10.925 Pushing 73 00:05:13.925 --> 00:05:15.525 It's in Jesus. 74 00:05:16.125 --> 00:05:21.925 Oh that the master and Lord of the realm would return to put all 75 00:05:21.925 --> 00:05:22.425 things 76 00:05:22.425 --> 00:05:23.325 aright. 77 00:05:27.325 --> 00:05:28.725 In our text this morning 78 00:05:29.925 --> 00:05:34.725 Jesus and his disciples head into the town of Caesarea Philippi. 79 00:05:35.825 --> 00:05:43.025 Reference to this Roman Outpost bring to our mind as readers of Mark's 80 00:05:43.025 --> 00:05:43.925 gospel. 81 00:05:45.425 --> 00:05:47.925 A whole notion of a king 82 00:05:48.225 --> 00:05:50.025 and is this guy named Herod. 83 00:05:50.025 --> 00:05:53.825 Philip had renamed this city 84 00:05:54.325 --> 00:06:01.325 after Caesar, Augustus of Rome, the great Caesar. Perhaps, Herod 85 00:06:01.325 --> 00:06:01.925 thought 86 00:06:03.125 --> 00:06:05.725 perhaps the residents of this town 87 00:06:05.725 --> 00:06:09.425 thought this August Caesar of Rome 88 00:06:09.525 --> 00:06:11.125 he will be the one to put 89 00:06:11.125 --> 00:06:12.725 all things aright. 90 00:06:14.825 --> 00:06:17.025 Jesus and his disciples knew better. 91 00:06:18.125 --> 00:06:20.725 They knew what the Roman occupation. 92 00:06:20.725 --> 00:06:25.225 What the Roman Empire really was occupying forces. 93 00:06:25.825 --> 00:06:31.425 They were enemies enemies of the Jewish people, suitors of the realm 94 00:06:32.025 --> 00:06:34.525 that really belonged to Yahweh. 95 00:06:34.925 --> 00:06:39.025 The Creator Lord and Master of the entire Realm. 96 00:06:40.425 --> 00:06:42.025 Jesus disciples 97 00:06:42.425 --> 00:06:44.225 probably knew all too 98 00:06:44.225 --> 00:06:51.425 well, prophecies like Zechariah 9 verse 9, that someday someday the 99 00:06:51.425 --> 00:06:55.825 Lord and Master would return and they would be able to say together. 100 00:06:56.025 --> 00:06:56.625 Rejoice 101 00:06:56.625 --> 00:06:58.125 Greatly O Daughter of Zion. 102 00:06:58.125 --> 00:07:00.225 Shout aloud O daughter of Jerusalem 103 00:07:00.225 --> 00:07:03.125 behold your king is coming to you. 104 00:07:04.025 --> 00:07:06.425 Righteous and having salvation. 105 00:07:08.625 --> 00:07:17.625 The disciples as faith-filled Jews had long expected to coming return 106 00:07:17.625 --> 00:07:19.025 of Yahweh's King. 107 00:07:20.025 --> 00:07:25.625 But up until this point in Mark's gospel, the identity of Jesus was 108 00:07:25.625 --> 00:07:32.825 veiled and it wasn't understood even by Jesus closest followers the 109 00:07:32.825 --> 00:07:33.825 disciples. 110 00:07:36.525 --> 00:07:43.625 In The Odyssey, when the veiled master of the realm returns to show up 111 00:07:43.625 --> 00:07:44.825 to Eumaeus. 112 00:07:46.125 --> 00:07:53.325 He begins to tell stories of Odysseus and Eumaeus, Eumaeus morning, 113 00:07:54.125 --> 00:07:56.925 turns to curiosity. 114 00:07:58.525 --> 00:08:00.625 Who are you? 115 00:08:01.225 --> 00:08:10.425 Eumaeus begins to ply this stranger with questions, but you old man. 116 00:08:10.425 --> 00:08:14.025 He still doesn't know this is Odysseus, but you old man 117 00:08:14.025 --> 00:08:18.525 come tell me of your own troubles declare that to me this truly that I 118 00:08:18.525 --> 00:08:19.725 may be certain of it. 119 00:08:19.825 --> 00:08:22.225 Who are you among men? 120 00:08:23.225 --> 00:08:26.925 And from where, where is your city where your parents? On 121 00:08:26.925 --> 00:08:28.525 what sort of ship did you come? 122 00:08:28.625 --> 00:08:30.425 How did sailors bring you to 123 00:08:30.425 --> 00:08:31.225 Ithaca? 124 00:08:31.725 --> 00:08:34.425 Who did they declare themselves to be for 125 00:08:34.425 --> 00:08:37.225 I do not suppose that you came here on foot. 126 00:08:38.925 --> 00:08:45.625 A very similar dynamic is that play in Mark's gospel, revolving around 127 00:08:45.625 --> 00:08:48.425 this identity of Jesus. 128 00:08:48.625 --> 00:08:52.125 Jesus shows up to all these people does all these miracles. 129 00:08:53.625 --> 00:08:59.125 But is continually charging the people to keep his identity, a secret 130 00:08:59.425 --> 00:09:02.225 quiet. Right before our text 131 00:09:02.225 --> 00:09:03.525 Jesus had healed 132 00:09:03.525 --> 00:09:09.325 a man who had been blind and then charges him to go home. 133 00:09:09.725 --> 00:09:14.925 Not to go into the village where he and his disciples were going on, 134 00:09:14.925 --> 00:09:15.325 too. 135 00:09:17.325 --> 00:09:18.425 But unlike 136 00:09:19.425 --> 00:09:20.525 Odysseus 137 00:09:20.925 --> 00:09:26.525 whose own servant puts the questions to Odysseus. In the gospel of 138 00:09:26.525 --> 00:09:27.125 Mark 139 00:09:27.825 --> 00:09:29.025 it's Jesus. 140 00:09:30.025 --> 00:09:35.925 Ever the tee kind teacher, who puts his own questions to the 141 00:09:35.925 --> 00:09:37.025 disciples. 142 00:09:38.125 --> 00:09:42.425 Who do people say me to be? 143 00:09:43.525 --> 00:09:46.725 Who do people say me to be? 144 00:09:47.425 --> 00:09:53.125 That's not the way it is in the ESV, but that's really the way that 145 00:09:53.125 --> 00:09:54.925 Jesus said it. Here 146 00:09:54.925 --> 00:10:00.625 it's interesting to note that Jesus spoke with a bit of formality 147 00:10:01.225 --> 00:10:07.125 using a grammatical instruction called the infinitive in indirect 148 00:10:07.125 --> 00:10:08.325 discourse. 149 00:10:11.325 --> 00:10:14.925 It's a thoroughly Hellenistic construction. 150 00:10:15.825 --> 00:10:19.225 Perhaps the original audience of the Gospel of Mark were picking up 151 00:10:19.225 --> 00:10:19.825 that 152 00:10:20.225 --> 00:10:25.825 maybe it's not just Jewish prophecies, which might be fulfilled in 153 00:10:25.825 --> 00:10:26.425 this coming 154 00:10:26.425 --> 00:10:27.125 Jesus. 155 00:10:27.725 --> 00:10:29.525 Maybe it's even Greek 156 00:10:30.125 --> 00:10:35.425 and Hellenistic hopes for the return of an Odysseus, like character, 157 00:10:35.625 --> 00:10:39.125 that might be fulfilled in this Jesus. 158 00:10:40.025 --> 00:10:44.325 After the disciples give their answer, some say, John the Baptist 159 00:10:44.325 --> 00:10:50.925 others Elijah others one of the prophets, then Jesus puts this most 160 00:10:50.925 --> 00:10:52.725 important question. 161 00:10:53.225 --> 00:10:58.325 The most important question that could be asked of any human being to 162 00:10:58.325 --> 00:10:59.425 the disciples. 163 00:11:00.925 --> 00:11:05.425 But you, who do you say that I am? 164 00:11:06.525 --> 00:11:10.325 Jesus didn't address his question directly to Peter. 165 00:11:11.725 --> 00:11:12.925 He didn't say Peter. 166 00:11:13.125 --> 00:11:15.325 Who do you personally say that 167 00:11:15.325 --> 00:11:15.725 I am? 168 00:11:16.625 --> 00:11:19.925 He said, who do you all 169 00:11:21.025 --> 00:11:22.825 say that I am? 170 00:11:24.025 --> 00:11:24.725 This morning 171 00:11:25.725 --> 00:11:28.525 I want you to hear again 172 00:11:28.925 --> 00:11:31.525 Jesus question. 173 00:11:33.325 --> 00:11:37.525 Who do you all say Jesus to be? 174 00:11:40.025 --> 00:11:45.225 The question, confronts us in all of our misplaced optimism that 175 00:11:45.225 --> 00:11:53.125 someone or something would show up in our lives and put things 176 00:11:53.125 --> 00:11:54.125 aright. 177 00:11:56.325 --> 00:11:59.025 For people who are tired of this pandemic. 178 00:12:00.725 --> 00:12:05.825 For people who despair and struggle with their own sin or with someone 179 00:12:05.825 --> 00:12:12.325 else's. For those who are tired about hearing about the possibility of 180 00:12:12.325 --> 00:12:17.825 a coming civil war in America, or war with China or war with Russia. 181 00:12:19.125 --> 00:12:24.725 For people who grieve the passing of a loved one in the wake of our 182 00:12:24.725 --> 00:12:26.325 dread enemy death. 183 00:12:27.325 --> 00:12:29.225 For all of us this morning 184 00:12:29.225 --> 00:12:33.025 there is no better question to consider. 185 00:12:35.125 --> 00:12:38.225 Then, who do you say Jesus to be? 186 00:12:40.525 --> 00:12:44.625 We all know Peters now-famous answer. 187 00:12:44.625 --> 00:12:48.325 Indeed his confession, which we commemorate this morning. 188 00:12:48.625 --> 00:12:49.025 Jesus 189 00:12:49.025 --> 00:12:55.225 you are the Christos, the Christ, the Messiah, the one anointed to be 190 00:12:55.225 --> 00:12:57.125 King. Jesus 191 00:12:57.125 --> 00:13:03.325 you're the one that Psalm 2:4 told that someday Yahweh would set his 192 00:13:03.325 --> 00:13:06.625 King on Zion His Holy Hill. 193 00:13:08.025 --> 00:13:13.525 Our teacher and commentator of the Gospel of Mark, 194 00:13:13.525 --> 00:13:13.925 Dr. 195 00:13:13.925 --> 00:13:18.525 James Voelz, who already knows that I stole every single one of these 196 00:13:18.525 --> 00:13:21.025 insights in this sermon from his commentary. 197 00:13:23.825 --> 00:13:29.225 Has told us that the use of this word, Christo's 198 00:13:32.525 --> 00:13:35.825 comes up for the first time in the gospel of Mark. 199 00:13:36.725 --> 00:13:40.825 After it had appeared in the very first verse the, beginning of the 200 00:13:40.825 --> 00:13:42.425 Gospel of Jesus Christ 201 00:13:42.425 --> 00:13:48.425 the Son of God. Christo's, Christ doesn't show up again until Peter's 202 00:13:48.425 --> 00:13:50.225 confession in Mark 203 00:13:50.225 --> 00:13:51.425 Chapter 8. 204 00:13:53.825 --> 00:13:56.625 Peter confesses Jesus to be the Christ. 205 00:13:57.725 --> 00:14:01.925 And all the sudden we think our blindness to who Jesus is has been 206 00:14:01.925 --> 00:14:02.725 healed. 207 00:14:03.125 --> 00:14:04.125 We see Jesus 208 00:14:04.125 --> 00:14:06.425 now for who he really is, right? 209 00:14:08.725 --> 00:14:09.425 Or do we? 210 00:14:11.325 --> 00:14:13.225 As we also know all too 211 00:14:13.225 --> 00:14:18.225 well, Peter's confession of Jesus Christ was spot on and yet 212 00:14:19.225 --> 00:14:24.825 yet his further comments, when he charged Jesus, not to speak of 213 00:14:24.825 --> 00:14:28.925 things like suffering, or crosses or death. 214 00:14:30.125 --> 00:14:33.825 Well, it revealed that Peter was actually still quite blind. 215 00:14:35.325 --> 00:14:40.225 Like a man who was just beginning to see but hadn't yet seen clearly. 216 00:14:40.725 --> 00:14:45.825 Peter was actually still quite conditioned by the culture around him. 217 00:14:46.525 --> 00:14:47.325 In Peters day 218 00:14:47.325 --> 00:14:52.525 the term Christos, was commonly seen to denote one who would implement 219 00:14:52.725 --> 00:14:54.925 a glorious reign. 220 00:14:57.025 --> 00:15:04.825 The first century BC document, the Psalms of Solomon, say this about 221 00:15:04.925 --> 00:15:07.125 this coming Christo's. 222 00:15:08.725 --> 00:15:13.525 See, Lord and raise up for them, their King, the son of David to rule 223 00:15:13.525 --> 00:15:15.025 over your servant Israel. 224 00:15:15.025 --> 00:15:19.125 And the time known To You O, God, undergird him with strength to 225 00:15:19.125 --> 00:15:24.925 destroy the unrighteous rulers to purge Jerusalem from Gentiles, who 226 00:15:24.925 --> 00:15:29.625 trample, her to destruction. The arrogance of sinners, like a potter's 227 00:15:29.625 --> 00:15:35.925 jar to shatter, all their substance, with an iron rod. To destroy, the 228 00:15:35.925 --> 00:15:37.725 unlawful nations with the word 229 00:15:38.525 --> 00:15:39.625 of his mouth. 230 00:15:40.725 --> 00:15:48.725 The Jews were hoping the Christo's would come and smash pagans sinners 231 00:15:48.725 --> 00:15:50.025 to bits. 232 00:15:52.525 --> 00:15:56.325 So did the readers of Homer's Odyssey. In book 14 233 00:15:56.325 --> 00:16:00.825 the stranger, who is really Odysseus in disguise. Promises 234 00:16:00.825 --> 00:16:05.625 Eumaeus that Odysseus will return and he's going to return with a 235 00:16:05.625 --> 00:16:06.725 vengeance. 236 00:16:07.125 --> 00:16:11.125 Odysseus says, now be my witness Zeus above all gods. 237 00:16:11.325 --> 00:16:13.025 In the course of this very month 238 00:16:13.025 --> 00:16:19.525 shall Odysseus return come here and take vengeance on all those who 239 00:16:19.525 --> 00:16:22.125 dishonor his wife and his glorious son. 240 00:16:24.525 --> 00:16:28.425 See, everyone wants a strong leader 241 00:16:29.925 --> 00:16:34.325 to come and fix the chaos all around them. 242 00:16:35.725 --> 00:16:40.125 And they want them to do that with brute force. 243 00:16:42.325 --> 00:16:47.225 How many of us have some group that we just love to hate? 244 00:16:48.325 --> 00:16:53.225 Because their way of dealing with the problems is so wrong. 245 00:16:53.725 --> 00:16:55.925 We have it all figured out. 246 00:16:56.425 --> 00:17:01.225 See those Democrats or those Republicans, those voters of Trump or 247 00:17:01.225 --> 00:17:02.525 those voters of Biden. 248 00:17:02.525 --> 00:17:04.925 They have made it all bad. 249 00:17:05.425 --> 00:17:09.525 And if just the other person would win, everything would be put back 250 00:17:10.025 --> 00:17:10.825 together. 251 00:17:13.525 --> 00:17:14.625 The truth of the matter 252 00:17:16.825 --> 00:17:25.425 is that even if we Christian sometimes join Peter in his mistaken, 253 00:17:25.425 --> 00:17:28.525 understanding of Jesus identity. 254 00:17:29.625 --> 00:17:32.525 It's Peters own mistake 255 00:17:33.525 --> 00:17:38.825 about Jesus being some triumphant or vengeful Messiah. 256 00:17:39.925 --> 00:17:42.525 That is a good reminder to us this morning. 257 00:17:44.225 --> 00:17:52.725 Jesus reveals to us again and again and again by his Spirit through 258 00:17:52.725 --> 00:18:00.025 his word that we have more to learn about him. Christians too like all 259 00:18:00.025 --> 00:18:01.325 peoples of the world 260 00:18:01.625 --> 00:18:08.225 love to glam on two little things as little saviors to find their way 261 00:18:08.225 --> 00:18:10.525 out of their little problems. 262 00:18:12.325 --> 00:18:14.425 But Jesus is ever the teacher. 263 00:18:15.625 --> 00:18:21.125 And even if he has to speak harsh words, like, get behind me, Satan, 264 00:18:21.925 --> 00:18:26.725 it's always to bring us back to himself. 265 00:18:29.325 --> 00:18:33.625 He teaches Peter and the disciples and us to that, our way has been 266 00:18:33.625 --> 00:18:35.125 joined to his. 267 00:18:35.125 --> 00:18:38.425 It is a way of cross and suffering. 268 00:18:39.425 --> 00:18:44.725 But Jesus ever goes before as his suffering, his cross his death is 269 00:18:44.725 --> 00:18:47.925 the coming that puts all things 270 00:18:47.925 --> 00:18:51.825 aright. It begins to put all things 271 00:18:52.125 --> 00:18:52.925 aright. 272 00:18:53.725 --> 00:18:57.325 And so Jesus promises, Peter and the disciples and us 273 00:18:57.325 --> 00:18:59.325 in the last verse of our text. 274 00:18:59.725 --> 00:19:01.425 Whoever would save his life will lose it. 275 00:19:01.425 --> 00:19:05.425 But whoever loses his life, for my sake and the Gospels 276 00:19:06.525 --> 00:19:07.525 will save it. 277 00:19:09.225 --> 00:19:11.225 Well, that's the gospel. 278 00:19:11.225 --> 00:19:13.525 The good news of our text. 279 00:19:13.725 --> 00:19:14.825 Jesus uses 280 00:19:14.825 --> 00:19:20.425 the word owye on galon to describe the great news of his return 281 00:19:20.425 --> 00:19:25.425 as the anointed king who would return to his realm, to put all things 282 00:19:25.425 --> 00:19:32.525 aright. This use of owye on galon in Mark, chapter 8 is also the first 283 00:19:32.525 --> 00:19:38.225 time that word is used throughout Mark's gospel, except for, in the 284 00:19:38.225 --> 00:19:38.925 first 285 00:19:39.025 --> 00:19:39.225 chapter. 286 00:19:39.225 --> 00:19:42.225 We're Mark sets up the story of this 287 00:19:42.225 --> 00:19:48.325 Jesus, coming to proclaim the gospel of God, and to call all people to 288 00:19:48.325 --> 00:19:50.525 repent and believe the gospel. 289 00:19:50.925 --> 00:19:51.225 One 290 00:19:51.225 --> 00:19:57.925 last little interesting parallel to Homer's Odyssey. Homer, also used 291 00:19:57.925 --> 00:20:01.025 the word owye on galon. 292 00:20:01.625 --> 00:20:08.425 He uses it twice, good news, and he only uses it in book 14 in this 293 00:20:08.425 --> 00:20:08.825 exchange 294 00:20:08.925 --> 00:20:11.825 with Eumaeus and Odysseus. 295 00:20:12.325 --> 00:20:17.425 And it's all about Odysseus, someday return, to put all things 296 00:20:17.425 --> 00:20:19.725 aright in his realm. 297 00:20:20.925 --> 00:20:28.725 You see all hopes of all peoples, over the whole face of the Earth. 298 00:20:29.025 --> 00:20:30.725 All of our hopes 299 00:20:32.225 --> 00:20:33.025 are met 300 00:20:34.125 --> 00:20:41.525 in this one, Lord, Jesus Christ. Much far greater than Odysseus or any 301 00:20:41.525 --> 00:20:44.725 other hero that we might glam on to. 302 00:20:46.125 --> 00:20:52.925 And our lord Jesus, our lord, Jesus is returning soon to his realm to 303 00:20:52.925 --> 00:20:58.525 put all things, right. Until that day 304 00:20:59.625 --> 00:21:00.925 we look for his coming. 305 00:21:01.925 --> 00:21:02.525 Amen. 306 00:21:02.725 --> 00:21:04.625 Come quickly Lord, Jesus. 307 00:21:05.425 --> 00:21:05.925 Amen. 308 00:21:07.025 --> 00:21:08.525 We stand to sing the Te Deum.
