WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.625 --> 00:00:01.925 Old deaf ones, 2 00:00:01.925 --> 00:00:06.625 listen. O, blind ones look intently to see. 3 00:00:07.225 --> 00:00:10.925 Those are the blunt words that Isaiah addresses to the people of 4 00:00:10.925 --> 00:00:11.725 Yahweh. 5 00:00:12.525 --> 00:00:14.625 But how can deaf ones 6 00:00:14.625 --> 00:00:15.125 listen? 7 00:00:15.125 --> 00:00:21.025 How can blind one see? As incredible and hard as that is it's not the 8 00:00:21.025 --> 00:00:24.825 least bit surprising to hear that coming out of the mouth of Isaiah. 9 00:00:25.125 --> 00:00:27.625 After all when he was called as a prophet 10 00:00:27.625 --> 00:00:30.225 Yahweh said to him, go and tell this 11 00:00:30.425 --> 00:00:36.825 people be ever hearing but never understanding be ever seen but never 12 00:00:36.825 --> 00:00:37.725 perceiving. 13 00:00:37.825 --> 00:00:43.425 Make the heart of this people calloused make their ears dull and close 14 00:00:43.425 --> 00:00:44.325 their eyes. 15 00:00:44.525 --> 00:00:48.625 Otherwise, they will see with their eyes hear with their ears 16 00:00:48.725 --> 00:00:52.425 understand with their hearts and turn and be healed. 17 00:00:53.825 --> 00:00:58.925 Isaiah would see the realization of those very hard words that came 18 00:00:58.925 --> 00:01:00.225 forth from Yahweh. 19 00:01:00.625 --> 00:01:03.725 The people would not listen to his word. 20 00:01:03.925 --> 00:01:06.425 They refused to see what he was doing. 21 00:01:06.525 --> 00:01:08.925 And so their hearts were hard. 22 00:01:09.825 --> 00:01:15.425 Now, what a stark contrast that is from what Israel was called to be. 23 00:01:16.025 --> 00:01:19.525 Israel was called to be the servant of Yahweh. 24 00:01:19.925 --> 00:01:23.425 So that Israel was called to open eyes 25 00:01:23.625 --> 00:01:32.725 that are blind. And instead Israel has blinded himself. Blind and 26 00:01:32.725 --> 00:01:35.025 deaf to yahweh's word 27 00:01:35.025 --> 00:01:37.825 Israel is now hard-hearted. 28 00:01:38.325 --> 00:01:45.125 So Isaiah rightly says Yahweh poured out his wrath upon him. 29 00:01:45.525 --> 00:01:51.525 His anger and it's set him ablaze all around but he did not understand. 30 00:01:51.925 --> 00:01:53.125 It burned him 31 00:01:53.625 --> 00:01:56.125 but he did not take it to heart. 32 00:01:57.625 --> 00:02:01.625 Now, that's exactly where we find ourselves at the close of Isaiah 33 00:02:01.625 --> 00:02:08.325 chapter 42. Israel called, to be the servant of Yahweh has failed 34 00:02:08.325 --> 00:02:12.825 miserably. That was true in the 8th Century BC 35 00:02:12.925 --> 00:02:17.725 when Isaiah delivered, these words to God's people. It was true in the 36 00:02:17.725 --> 00:02:19.625 6th Century BC 37 00:02:19.725 --> 00:02:24.025 when Jerusalem would know that wrath of Yahweh as their hauled off 38 00:02:24.025 --> 00:02:25.125 into Exile. 39 00:02:25.625 --> 00:02:27.125 It was true in the first 40 00:02:27.525 --> 00:02:34.725 Century AD when Yahweh would call his son to be Israel reduced to one. 41 00:02:35.225 --> 00:02:40.825 To be the true servant of Yahweh who opened eyes that are blind, so 42 00:02:40.825 --> 00:02:47.125 that they could see. Who opened ears, so that they could hear. Who losed 43 00:02:47.125 --> 00:02:51.025 the tongue of the mute so that they might proclaim 44 00:02:51.025 --> 00:02:56.725 what God had done. The arrival of the true servant of Yahweh 45 00:02:57.125 --> 00:02:58.625 changes everything. 46 00:03:00.625 --> 00:03:06.025 But no matter how much things change, some things, never change. 47 00:03:07.525 --> 00:03:08.625 What about Israel 48 00:03:08.625 --> 00:03:10.425 The people of God today? 49 00:03:10.925 --> 00:03:12.325 What about the church? 50 00:03:13.325 --> 00:03:19.625 How often do we blind ourselves and turn a deaf ear to what he is 51 00:03:19.625 --> 00:03:25.325 doing among us? Like our forefathers in the 8th Century BC 52 00:03:25.325 --> 00:03:28.025 we are distracted by our idols. 53 00:03:28.625 --> 00:03:34.025 They look to their idols to guarantee their prosperity. For them 54 00:03:34.325 --> 00:03:37.225 God was simply a means to a greater 55 00:03:37.325 --> 00:03:42.825 end. Securing the desires of their dule hearts. 56 00:03:43.925 --> 00:03:50.525 Yahweh called them to open their eyes to see that he was the end. 57 00:03:50.925 --> 00:03:56.225 The end alone who satisfies the created yearning of the heart. 58 00:03:57.525 --> 00:04:04.825 And we struggle with the exact same sin today. Blind to Yahweh, as the 59 00:04:04.825 --> 00:04:07.525 fullness of what we need. 60 00:04:08.025 --> 00:04:12.525 We run after idols, that will give us what we want 61 00:04:12.525 --> 00:04:18.625 or so, we think. That they will give us security amid a pandemic. 62 00:04:19.025 --> 00:04:22.525 Financial confidence amid inflation. 63 00:04:23.725 --> 00:04:29.025 And our fear that all of this is being orchestrated by some nefarious 64 00:04:29.025 --> 00:04:34.725 groups that are looking to give us the great reset, deafens us to 65 00:04:34.725 --> 00:04:40.925 Yahweh's call for a great reset within each and every one of us, 66 00:04:41.625 --> 00:04:42.725 repentance. 67 00:04:44.225 --> 00:04:49.825 Isaiah's hard words for Israel are words for us as well. 68 00:04:51.125 --> 00:04:57.125 And as shocking as those hard words are in Isaiah 42. Far more 69 00:04:57.125 --> 00:05:04.625 shocking are the sweet comforting words of Yahweh in Isaiah 43 70 00:05:04.625 --> 00:05:10.925 that we just heard read. Isaiah seizes our attention in Isaiah 43 71 00:05:10.925 --> 00:05:13.625 saying, but now 72 00:05:14.225 --> 00:05:20.325 in other words, something far different, a big change is being 73 00:05:20.325 --> 00:05:22.025 delivered to you. 74 00:05:22.925 --> 00:05:23.425 Lest 75 00:05:23.425 --> 00:05:27.225 you think that Isaiah is just offering an unrealistic dream. 76 00:05:27.325 --> 00:05:31.425 He proclaims thus says Yahweh. 77 00:05:32.125 --> 00:05:38.525 This isn't Isaiah's word, it is Yahweh's, word, certain and true. And 78 00:05:38.525 --> 00:05:42.325 the certain and true word proclaimed in Isaiah 43. 79 00:05:42.525 --> 00:05:43.825 Is that despite 80 00:05:44.325 --> 00:05:46.925 the condemnation of Isaiah 42. 81 00:05:48.125 --> 00:05:53.725 Isaiah, 43 says that God is for you. 82 00:05:55.025 --> 00:06:00.625 There is no missing out that Yahweh is at work for you. In the first 83 00:06:00.625 --> 00:06:03.125 seven, verses of Isaiah 43. 84 00:06:03.325 --> 00:06:09.125 There are 22 uses of the first person singular, whether it be the 85 00:06:09.125 --> 00:06:14.825 pronoun, the pronominal suffix, or in verbal form. 22 times 86 00:06:14.825 --> 00:06:16.225 we hear 87 00:06:16.725 --> 00:06:20.525 Yahweh referring to himself in the first person. 88 00:06:21.425 --> 00:06:24.525 I am redeeming, you. 89 00:06:24.625 --> 00:06:26.625 I am calling you by name. 90 00:06:27.025 --> 00:06:28.625 You are mine. 91 00:06:29.325 --> 00:06:30.925 I am with you. 92 00:06:31.525 --> 00:06:34.725 I will gather you. And did 93 00:06:34.725 --> 00:06:37.725 you also notice the prevalence of you? 94 00:06:38.625 --> 00:06:40.025 In these 7 verses 95 00:06:40.025 --> 00:06:45.225 there are 26 instances of the second person singular. 96 00:06:45.725 --> 00:06:50.625 It is as if Yahweh were saying for whom do I do all of this? 97 00:06:51.125 --> 00:06:54.425 You you you. 98 00:06:55.625 --> 00:06:59.025 The steady rhythm of the first person singular 99 00:06:59.125 --> 00:07:03.325 and the second person singular makes it clear that this is not 100 00:07:03.325 --> 00:07:05.025 something abstract. 101 00:07:05.125 --> 00:07:10.325 Yahweh is not holding you off at an arm's length in the third person. 102 00:07:10.725 --> 00:07:16.925 But instead here we have the intimate concern of I for you. 103 00:07:18.125 --> 00:07:23.625 And yahweh's intimate concern is seen in what he does. 104 00:07:24.725 --> 00:07:30.825 The text begins with Yahweh, identifying himself as he who created 105 00:07:30.825 --> 00:07:31.125 you. 106 00:07:31.425 --> 00:07:34.925 Oh Jacob, he who formed you O Israel. 107 00:07:35.525 --> 00:07:41.425 And the text ends with Yahweh, identifying those for whom he acts as 108 00:07:41.725 --> 00:07:51.025 everyone whom I created for my glory whom I formed and made. There 109 00:07:51.025 --> 00:07:54.425 you see the doctrine of the creation is the bookends 110 00:07:54.825 --> 00:08:01.025 for this very text with the redemptive work of Yahweh sandwiched in 111 00:08:01.025 --> 00:08:07.325 between. You cannot pull apart the first, and second articles of the 112 00:08:07.325 --> 00:08:11.925 Creed. Creation, those whom God has created 113 00:08:12.025 --> 00:08:14.425 He then seeks to redeem. 114 00:08:15.125 --> 00:08:20.525 Yahweh's, creative work and redemptive work are bound up together. 115 00:08:21.425 --> 00:08:25.925 So, how can you be sure that Yahweh is interested in redeeming, you? 116 00:08:27.125 --> 00:08:32.125 He's created you and as if that were not enough and with Yahweh, 117 00:08:32.125 --> 00:08:34.625 there's always more than enough. 118 00:08:35.025 --> 00:08:39.825 You have certainty that Yahweh redeems you because of what he has done 119 00:08:39.825 --> 00:08:40.925 in the past. 120 00:08:41.525 --> 00:08:46.325 Yahweh here in Isaiah 43, takes up the language of the Exodus. 121 00:08:46.625 --> 00:08:50.225 When he talks about how when you pass through the waters 122 00:08:50.225 --> 00:08:52.825 I will be with you and through the rivers 123 00:08:52.825 --> 00:08:55.125 they shall not overwhelm you. 124 00:08:56.025 --> 00:09:01.325 Not only does Yahweh recall the Exodus when Israel passed through 125 00:09:01.325 --> 00:09:03.025 the waters of the parted 126 00:09:03.025 --> 00:09:07.925 sea. He also brings in the entrance into the promised land when they 127 00:09:07.925 --> 00:09:09.125 go through the River 128 00:09:09.125 --> 00:09:13.525 Jordan again, parted that they might receive what Yahweh had done for 129 00:09:13.525 --> 00:09:13.925 them. 130 00:09:14.725 --> 00:09:21.125 Yahweh is defining himself as the God who fights for his people. 131 00:09:21.825 --> 00:09:25.125 What he did in the days of Moses and Joshua 132 00:09:25.825 --> 00:09:27.025 he will do for Israel 133 00:09:27.025 --> 00:09:28.725 even in Exile. 134 00:09:29.725 --> 00:09:34.125 He will do it for you, even amid your sin. 135 00:09:35.225 --> 00:09:40.325 Yahweh brings about a new and greater Exodus. 136 00:09:41.625 --> 00:09:43.225 And just how great is it? 137 00:09:44.225 --> 00:09:48.825 His people not only pass through the waters and the rivers. Yahweh 138 00:09:48.825 --> 00:09:54.325 promises that when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned. 139 00:09:54.525 --> 00:09:58.325 The flame shall not set you ablaze. 140 00:09:59.625 --> 00:10:03.925 This is the fire that we heard about earlier from the end of Isaiah 141 00:10:03.925 --> 00:10:04.725 42. 142 00:10:04.925 --> 00:10:12.825 As Yahweh poured out his wrath, his anger and at set them ablaze. But 143 00:10:12.825 --> 00:10:14.625 here in Isaiah 43 144 00:10:15.125 --> 00:10:22.025 Yahweh promises, his Israel, his people, his church, you, he promises 145 00:10:22.025 --> 00:10:27.425 that when you pass through the consuming fire of the wrath of Yahweh, 146 00:10:28.025 --> 00:10:31.025 that you will be unscathed. 147 00:10:31.325 --> 00:10:38.225 Not a hair, even singed and all for just one reason. 148 00:10:39.425 --> 00:10:43.025 Yahweh himself has passed through the River 149 00:10:43.025 --> 00:10:43.625 Jordan. 150 00:10:44.725 --> 00:10:50.225 He has identified himself with sinners, receiving a baptism of 151 00:10:50.225 --> 00:10:52.325 repentance for the forgiveness of sin. 152 00:10:53.325 --> 00:10:58.525 He who knew no sin became sin for us. 153 00:10:59.425 --> 00:11:05.025 He takes the consuming fire of Yahweh's righteous wrath against sin, 154 00:11:05.725 --> 00:11:09.425 so that you pass through unscathed. 155 00:11:10.825 --> 00:11:15.425 That is the God who has chosen to dwell with you. 156 00:11:16.525 --> 00:11:18.525 No wonder Isaiah records 157 00:11:18.525 --> 00:11:19.625 the word of Yahweh. 158 00:11:20.525 --> 00:11:22.725 Do not fear. 159 00:11:23.425 --> 00:11:26.825 For I have redeemed, you. One more time. 160 00:11:27.325 --> 00:11:32.525 Do not fear for I am with you. 161 00:11:33.825 --> 00:11:37.525 In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
