WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.925 --> 00:00:07.525 It is that it is that time in the rhythm of the church year, when we 2 00:00:08.025 --> 00:00:13.125 turn our attention to the end times to the apocalypse if you will or to 3 00:00:13.125 --> 00:00:14.225 Judgment Day. 4 00:00:15.225 --> 00:00:18.325 And whenever I think about Judgment Day, I don't know why 5 00:00:18.325 --> 00:00:22.725 but I always go back to many years ago to my Greek, professor at 6 00:00:22.725 --> 00:00:25.525 Bethany, Lutheran college professor, Glenn 7 00:00:25.525 --> 00:00:26.025 Reichwald. 8 00:00:26.725 --> 00:00:30.225 And Professor Reichwald would always refer to the day at the end 9 00:00:30.225 --> 00:00:35.025 of the semester of final exams in Greek class as Judgment Day. 10 00:00:36.825 --> 00:00:40.825 I guess he was trying to instill a little bit of fear into our hearts. 11 00:00:41.225 --> 00:00:43.925 We didn't need to have any more fear instilled into our hearts 12 00:00:43.925 --> 00:00:46.725 actually, but I guess that's what he was trying to do so that, 13 00:00:46.725 --> 00:00:50.925 hopefully, we would study harder and maybe pass the exam. 14 00:00:52.725 --> 00:00:56.925 Well, it is true that the end times are often spoken of, in fearful 15 00:00:56.925 --> 00:00:57.625 terms. 16 00:00:58.025 --> 00:01:02.925 Even the word apocalypse, the word apocalypse means Revelation where 17 00:01:02.925 --> 00:01:07.325 we see the consummation of God's grace, where God's plan of Eternal 18 00:01:07.325 --> 00:01:09.425 salvation is revealed 19 00:01:09.425 --> 00:01:15.025 its, it's brought to fruition. But it has taken on a new meaning 20 00:01:15.025 --> 00:01:18.825 in everyday discourse, this word Apocalypse of something very bad 21 00:01:18.825 --> 00:01:21.125 very negative. The dictionary calls it 22 00:01:21.225 --> 00:01:25.925 the essential meaning and it talks about a biblical apocalypse as a as a 23 00:01:25.925 --> 00:01:31.425 very bad or very sudden event, a great disaster that causes great harm 24 00:01:31.425 --> 00:01:33.925 and destruction and loss. 25 00:01:36.125 --> 00:01:42.125 But in our reading today from Daniel chapter 12, we see a little bit 26 00:01:42.125 --> 00:01:43.125 of a different picture. 27 00:01:43.125 --> 00:01:47.125 Daniel paints, a little bit of a different picture because the purpose 28 00:01:47.125 --> 00:01:51.525 of Daniel's writing is to give us hope to give us optimism. 29 00:01:52.025 --> 00:01:57.825 It's to be a hopeful picture at least for the faithful of where the 30 00:01:57.825 --> 00:01:59.125 world is headed. 31 00:02:01.525 --> 00:02:05.425 We all know that the Book of Daniel is a book about faithfulness. 32 00:02:06.125 --> 00:02:09.025 When we think of Daniel, the man here he is 33 00:02:09.025 --> 00:02:13.925 he was hauled off against his will off to a foreign country 34 00:02:13.925 --> 00:02:18.825 a strange country, forcibly. A land of strange customs. 35 00:02:18.825 --> 00:02:24.225 A land with capricious Kings, a myriad of false gods, temptations all 36 00:02:24.225 --> 00:02:25.025 around. 37 00:02:25.425 --> 00:02:29.125 And he was indoctrinated for three years in the ways and the customs, 38 00:02:29.125 --> 00:02:30.025 and the beliefs 39 00:02:30.225 --> 00:02:34.025 of the Babylonians and yet, in spite of all of that 40 00:02:34.025 --> 00:02:37.225 he refused to turn his back on the God 41 00:02:37.225 --> 00:02:42.225 he had worshipped all of his life, the creator of Heaven and Earth. 42 00:02:43.825 --> 00:02:47.525 Daniel on the one hand, was a great administrator and a prophet 43 00:02:47.525 --> 00:02:48.925 recognized by the king, 44 00:02:48.925 --> 00:02:53.325 he served the king. And eventually he was given power over the entire 45 00:02:53.425 --> 00:02:54.125 Kingdom. 46 00:02:55.325 --> 00:03:01.525 But on the other hand, he also in his life faced betrayal and sabotage 47 00:03:01.925 --> 00:03:04.925 and persecution and threats of death. 48 00:03:04.925 --> 00:03:08.225 He was condemned to a horrible death. And 49 00:03:08.225 --> 00:03:08.525 yet. 50 00:03:08.525 --> 00:03:11.525 he refused to give up on his God. 51 00:03:12.925 --> 00:03:13.125 To me 52 00:03:13.125 --> 00:03:14.325 the story is amazing 53 00:03:14.325 --> 00:03:16.325 when you think of the strength of his faith. 54 00:03:17.125 --> 00:03:20.825 It would have been so easy to give in to the allures of the grandeur 55 00:03:20.825 --> 00:03:24.825 of the kingdom of Babylonia at the time and he was in charge of it 56 00:03:24.825 --> 00:03:29.025 all. How easy I think this is the worst temptation he faced to give up 57 00:03:29.025 --> 00:03:33.725 on God how easy it would be to to fall into the trap of thinking that 58 00:03:33.725 --> 00:03:37.025 these things are the most important in life, to let your guard down, 59 00:03:37.325 --> 00:03:40.025 could have made things so much easier for himself. 60 00:03:40.125 --> 00:03:41.725 He could have taken advantage of his fame 61 00:03:42.025 --> 00:03:46.625 and his success, he could have made himself wealthy by fitting in, with 62 00:03:46.625 --> 00:03:48.325 all of those people around him. 63 00:03:48.725 --> 00:03:51.825 He could have secured for himself, a life of luxury or at least an 64 00:03:51.825 --> 00:03:55.125 easier life, all the power in that Kingdom had been 65 00:03:55.125 --> 00:03:58.525 given to him. Think of the temptation? 66 00:03:59.825 --> 00:04:04.725 You know, the saying power tends to corrupt absolute power corrupts 67 00:04:05.025 --> 00:04:05.925 absolutely. 68 00:04:07.125 --> 00:04:10.225 But he resisted the temptations of the world. 69 00:04:10.825 --> 00:04:14.225 He resisted the temptations of the power that he possessed. 70 00:04:14.825 --> 00:04:18.825 I think he's an example to all of us who so easily give in to those 71 00:04:18.825 --> 00:04:23.925 kinds of temptations who so easily want to use power or use 72 00:04:24.125 --> 00:04:27.425 possessions or some other display of grandeur or glory 73 00:04:27.425 --> 00:04:31.725 that we might think we possess sometimes even if it's at the expense 74 00:04:31.725 --> 00:04:32.525 of others, 75 00:04:34.525 --> 00:04:39.225 Daniel's faithfulness is a testimony to those of us living in a world 76 00:04:39.225 --> 00:04:44.925 that always tempts us to demure to hold back on our faith to just make 77 00:04:44.925 --> 00:04:47.825 things a little bit more comfortable for ourselves. 78 00:04:50.625 --> 00:04:53.825 But when I say that Daniel is a book about faithfulness. 79 00:04:54.225 --> 00:04:58.225 There's an even more important faithfulness that we see in this book, 80 00:04:58.825 --> 00:05:00.325 much more important. 81 00:05:00.525 --> 00:05:02.925 And that is the faithfulness of God. 82 00:05:03.725 --> 00:05:05.825 It was God's faithfulness after all 83 00:05:05.825 --> 00:05:08.025 that gave Daniel the power to be faithful. 84 00:05:08.825 --> 00:05:13.225 God, Daniel was faithful because he knew that God was and always would 85 00:05:13.225 --> 00:05:14.525 be faithful. 86 00:05:15.125 --> 00:05:17.625 Even when Daniel faced the Lion's Den 87 00:05:18.125 --> 00:05:18.425 he knew 88 00:05:18.525 --> 00:05:19.325 he had no choice. 89 00:05:19.325 --> 00:05:20.725 He could not renounce his God. 90 00:05:20.725 --> 00:05:24.225 And I don't believe that Daniel knew for certain that he was going to 91 00:05:24.225 --> 00:05:25.625 be rescued from that mortal death 92 00:05:25.625 --> 00:05:26.425 in the Lion's Den. 93 00:05:26.425 --> 00:05:28.725 I mean, we know it just doesn't work that way. 94 00:05:28.725 --> 00:05:30.625 I don't believe that he knew that. Yet 95 00:05:30.625 --> 00:05:32.725 he was not going to give up on his God. 96 00:05:32.725 --> 00:05:37.725 Daniel remained faithful and refused to bow down and worship the king 97 00:05:37.725 --> 00:05:40.725 because he knew that no matter what happened 98 00:05:40.725 --> 00:05:46.125 ultimately God's purpose would be achieved. And that there was a higher 99 00:05:46.125 --> 00:05:48.525 reward that no matter what would be his 100 00:05:48.625 --> 00:05:51.125 because God is faithful to his promises. 101 00:05:52.325 --> 00:05:56.925 Daniel knew that death is not the final enemy death in this life. 102 00:05:57.925 --> 00:05:58.025 Now 103 00:05:58.025 --> 00:06:01.825 he didn't know, of course, the Apostle Paul, but he knew, I think some 104 00:06:01.825 --> 00:06:02.725 of those things. 105 00:06:02.725 --> 00:06:03.025 I'm fact 106 00:06:03.025 --> 00:06:03.925 I'm sure of it. 107 00:06:04.125 --> 00:06:08.325 That Paul talked about that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor 108 00:06:08.325 --> 00:06:12.625 principalities nor powers nor things present, nor things to come nor 109 00:06:12.625 --> 00:06:17.525 height nor depth nor any other creature, would be able to separate him 110 00:06:17.525 --> 00:06:18.425 from the love of God. 111 00:06:18.725 --> 00:06:22.025 Which was his in the promised Messiah. 112 00:06:24.325 --> 00:06:27.625 And that is what we hear about in today's reading. 113 00:06:28.525 --> 00:06:32.225 Which takes us to the last days, the end times the apocalypse, 114 00:06:32.325 --> 00:06:33.025 if you will. 115 00:06:34.625 --> 00:06:38.325 In this passage, it says that in those last days, there will be a time 116 00:06:38.325 --> 00:06:44.725 of trouble something worse than ever seen before. That things will be 117 00:06:44.725 --> 00:06:45.425 so bad 118 00:06:45.425 --> 00:06:48.425 that the Angel, Michael will be sent to help protect and help 119 00:06:48.425 --> 00:06:52.925 strengthen God's people in the face of these trials and tribulations 120 00:06:53.425 --> 00:06:55.125 so that they would remain faithful. 121 00:06:56.325 --> 00:06:57.225 Daniel here 122 00:06:57.225 --> 00:06:59.425 the prophet doesn't go into all kinds of detail 123 00:06:59.425 --> 00:07:03.425 like we hear about from Jesus when he talks about Nations rising up 124 00:07:03.425 --> 00:07:04.325 against Nations. 125 00:07:04.325 --> 00:07:07.625 And brother against brother, and father, against son, and son against 126 00:07:07.625 --> 00:07:09.925 father, and famines and a blood 127 00:07:09.925 --> 00:07:12.425 red moon, and stars falling from the sky. 128 00:07:13.125 --> 00:07:17.925 He simply says there will be trouble like never seen before. 129 00:07:19.925 --> 00:07:24.425 But while there is trouble ahead and the purpose of this passage, I 130 00:07:24.425 --> 00:07:27.125 believe is to show us that while there is trouble ahead 131 00:07:27.125 --> 00:07:29.025 there is triumph, too. 132 00:07:30.125 --> 00:07:35.125 The point of these verses is to demonstrate the love and the mercy and 133 00:07:35.125 --> 00:07:40.525 the grace of God, even before the end of the very first verse of these 134 00:07:40.525 --> 00:07:41.625 three little versus here. 135 00:07:41.625 --> 00:07:45.525 He says, but at that time, your people shall be delivered. 136 00:07:47.325 --> 00:07:49.425 While there will be fearsome things about the end. 137 00:07:49.425 --> 00:07:53.125 The point is that God will be faithful to his people. 138 00:07:55.325 --> 00:08:00.725 Daniel speaks here about the wise who in the end will shine like the 139 00:08:00.725 --> 00:08:02.625 brightness of the sky above. 140 00:08:04.125 --> 00:08:05.925 Who are the wise? 141 00:08:06.825 --> 00:08:11.425 Well, they are those who of course, have grasped wisdom from above. It's 142 00:08:11.425 --> 00:08:12.525 not a 143 00:08:12.525 --> 00:08:17.225 worldly wisdom having to do with human Affairs, but it's about those 144 00:08:17.225 --> 00:08:20.025 who are wise unto salvation. 145 00:08:20.125 --> 00:08:24.625 That is the message of God's grace, and forgiveness, and mercy, the 146 00:08:24.625 --> 00:08:30.125 gospel of the Messiah, whose, whose atoning sacrifice restores fallen 147 00:08:30.225 --> 00:08:33.725 humanity, and brings us back into peace with God. 148 00:08:35.825 --> 00:08:41.625 Those who are wise are those who recognize their situation, their 149 00:08:41.625 --> 00:08:42.625 impurity. 150 00:08:43.325 --> 00:08:48.525 They know of the danger circumstances they are in. And those who are 151 00:08:48.525 --> 00:08:52.525 wise are those who have despised of their own strength and works and 152 00:08:52.525 --> 00:08:55.425 have trusted in the work of Jesus on their behalf. 153 00:08:56.225 --> 00:09:02.125 This is true wisdom, and they are described as shining as bright as 154 00:09:02.125 --> 00:09:03.025 the sky 155 00:09:03.725 --> 00:09:08.025 in the resurrection. Those who are wise shining as bright as the sky 156 00:09:08.325 --> 00:09:09.325 in the resurrection. 157 00:09:11.125 --> 00:09:12.825 But there's even more here. 158 00:09:13.925 --> 00:09:16.525 And this is where you come in. 159 00:09:17.525 --> 00:09:23.625 Because Daniel says that those who lead many to righteousness will 160 00:09:23.625 --> 00:09:25.825 shine like stars forever. 161 00:09:26.925 --> 00:09:32.925 Those who lead many to righteousness will shine like, stars forever. 162 00:09:34.325 --> 00:09:38.725 Now, certain this certainly this applies to any Christian who by his 163 00:09:38.725 --> 00:09:42.925 or her testimony of life, in words, brings glory to God and the 164 00:09:42.925 --> 00:09:44.825 knowledge of the Gospel to many. 165 00:09:46.425 --> 00:09:50.925 But I think in a very real in a very direct sense, it applies to the 166 00:09:50.925 --> 00:09:56.625 teachers of the church who lead the church in bringing the gospel to 167 00:09:56.625 --> 00:09:57.425 the world. 168 00:09:58.225 --> 00:09:59.625 That's what it's talking about here. 169 00:09:59.625 --> 00:10:03.525 There is an important missiological component here 170 00:10:03.525 --> 00:10:04.225 I would say. 171 00:10:07.325 --> 00:10:11.725 As I read this short passage in the promises of the third verse. 172 00:10:12.925 --> 00:10:16.025 In me, it stirs up a sense of urgency. 173 00:10:17.525 --> 00:10:23.025 As we prepare for, and as we wait for the coming of Christ, we see 174 00:10:23.025 --> 00:10:27.025 here that the world is heading for a day, when people's fate will be 175 00:10:27.025 --> 00:10:27.725 sealed. 176 00:10:28.125 --> 00:10:32.525 Those who have believed, will inherit eternal life and those who have 177 00:10:32.525 --> 00:10:37.125 not will inherit shame and everlasting contempt. 178 00:10:38.225 --> 00:10:42.425 To me, this seems to indicate that there should be a sense of urgency. 179 00:10:42.625 --> 00:10:45.425 We should have a sense of urgency about making the message of the 180 00:10:45.425 --> 00:10:47.325 Gospel, known far and wide. 181 00:10:49.925 --> 00:10:55.625 I remember many years ago when I was on the faculty at Fort Wayne and 182 00:10:55.625 --> 00:10:58.125 we were starting to talk about building a new library. 183 00:10:58.125 --> 00:11:02.125 And so they hired a couple of couple of different architectural firms 184 00:11:02.125 --> 00:11:05.125 to share some ideas with us. 185 00:11:05.125 --> 00:11:07.825 And as a faculty, we got to look at some of these ideas. 186 00:11:08.225 --> 00:11:13.225 And so one architect came in who was asked to show how he thought the 187 00:11:13.325 --> 00:11:17.225 library could look and fit in with the architecture of that campus. 188 00:11:17.725 --> 00:11:19.225 And he brought a model. 189 00:11:19.525 --> 00:11:23.125 A model of what he thought would look good and fitting. 190 00:11:23.725 --> 00:11:27.425 As a part of that model, this guy looked like Andy Warhol, by the way, 191 00:11:27.425 --> 00:11:29.925 it's that's beside the point doesn't mean anything about it. 192 00:11:29.925 --> 00:11:33.625 But to me that meant meant he must be pretty creative. 193 00:11:34.125 --> 00:11:40.125 So he as a part of his model, it included a plaza and also a clock 194 00:11:40.125 --> 00:11:40.625 tower. 195 00:11:41.525 --> 00:11:46.025 And on that clock tower, there would be four faces, four clock faces 196 00:11:46.025 --> 00:11:49.425 facing north, south, east and west. And 197 00:11:49.425 --> 00:11:51.825 as I looked at that and I was kind of thinking about it. 198 00:11:51.825 --> 00:11:55.625 I thought, you know, this really must have some symbolic meaning. 199 00:11:55.625 --> 00:11:57.425 So I talk to the architect. 200 00:11:57.425 --> 00:12:01.125 I said, you know, I think that there's some symbolic you Architects do 201 00:12:01.125 --> 00:12:04.125 stuff for a reason, you know, they think of the symbolism of what 202 00:12:04.125 --> 00:12:05.325 they're designing, right? 203 00:12:05.625 --> 00:12:08.825 So I said, you know, I think that there's some real powerful symbolic 204 00:12:08.825 --> 00:12:09.725 meaning here. 205 00:12:11.325 --> 00:12:16.625 I would say that what you're probably thinking is one is that there is 206 00:12:16.625 --> 00:12:21.125 a clock which indicates that time is fleeting, time is fleeting. 207 00:12:21.825 --> 00:12:26.125 And the time of Christ's return is coming. And then the fact that it's 208 00:12:26.125 --> 00:12:30.225 on a tower with four faces in all directions, to me seems to indicate 209 00:12:30.225 --> 00:12:34.125 that the gospel goes out to all the world to the four corners of the 210 00:12:34.125 --> 00:12:34.625 earth. 211 00:12:34.925 --> 00:12:37.225 Time is fleeting and its four corners of the earth. 212 00:12:37.225 --> 00:12:39.625 That's a gospel proclamation of the Gospel 213 00:12:39.625 --> 00:12:40.225 far and wide. 214 00:12:40.225 --> 00:12:41.225 That's what I thought. 215 00:12:41.325 --> 00:12:42.125 I thought it as pretty clever 216 00:12:42.525 --> 00:12:46.725 and so I mentioned this to him what I thought and he said no, it's 217 00:12:46.725 --> 00:12:47.725 just a clock tower. 218 00:12:50.225 --> 00:12:53.425 I still think it was a clever thought and every time I see a clock 219 00:12:53.425 --> 00:12:55.625 tower of four faces, I think about that. 220 00:12:57.625 --> 00:13:02.025 I would say that it was the observation was valid with or without a 221 00:13:02.025 --> 00:13:05.925 clock tower of four faces. As we race on in time 222 00:13:05.925 --> 00:13:06.625 to that day 223 00:13:06.625 --> 00:13:08.825 when Christ will come to judge. 224 00:13:09.425 --> 00:13:13.925 I hope that we would send, we would feel a sense of urgency. First 225 00:13:13.925 --> 00:13:18.025 an urgency to remain faithful, like, Daniel did. In the face of all 226 00:13:18.125 --> 00:13:22.025 of the temptations and the trials and the troubles that we have to put 227 00:13:22.025 --> 00:13:24.425 up with. So that we are counted 228 00:13:24.425 --> 00:13:29.125 among the wise that Daniel mentions. We do this, of course, by 229 00:13:29.125 --> 00:13:31.925 attending to the word, the spirit, working in the word. 230 00:13:33.325 --> 00:13:37.925 But it seems to me that we would also have an urgency about the task 231 00:13:37.925 --> 00:13:41.725 of leading others to righteousness as Daniel describes it. 232 00:13:42.125 --> 00:13:46.625 In fact, it's so important here that Daniel speaks here of a special 233 00:13:46.625 --> 00:13:51.525 client kind of Glory for those who do so they will shine like the 234 00:13:51.525 --> 00:13:52.725 stars of Heaven. 235 00:13:55.325 --> 00:13:59.725 Recently, someone was speaking to me about his church body, a Lutheran 236 00:13:59.725 --> 00:14:00.225 Church body, 237 00:14:00.225 --> 00:14:01.225 a sister Church of ours. 238 00:14:01.225 --> 00:14:04.425 Not the Lutheran Church, Missouri, Synod, although maybe it could have 239 00:14:04.425 --> 00:14:04.825 been. 240 00:14:05.725 --> 00:14:08.325 But as he was describing his church 241 00:14:08.325 --> 00:14:13.825 he, he used a word that kind of struck me, made me feel bad in a 242 00:14:13.825 --> 00:14:14.325 sense. 243 00:14:14.825 --> 00:14:17.625 He said, to his church was lethargic. 244 00:14:19.325 --> 00:14:22.225 I could not help but think about Revelation and the Church of 245 00:14:22.225 --> 00:14:25.525 Laodicea, which was neither hot nor cold, which was lukewarm. 246 00:14:25.825 --> 00:14:29.225 And God said he would spit him out of his mouth or vomit him out of 247 00:14:29.225 --> 00:14:29.725 his mouth 248 00:14:29.725 --> 00:14:30.325 actually. 249 00:14:30.925 --> 00:14:32.525 It was kind of sad to hear that. 250 00:14:33.525 --> 00:14:40.325 But my prayer is that God would cure me and all of us of our lethargy 251 00:14:40.725 --> 00:14:44.725 when it comes to leading others to righteousness because it is such a 252 00:14:44.725 --> 00:14:47.925 wonderful, wonderful privilege that we have. 253 00:14:49.325 --> 00:14:53.225 But in the end, it's not of course just about our faithfulness. 254 00:14:53.825 --> 00:14:57.525 It's about a faithfulness that is much greater than anything 255 00:14:57.825 --> 00:14:59.125 we could ever generate. 256 00:14:59.625 --> 00:15:02.825 It's about a faithfulness in a God. 257 00:15:02.825 --> 00:15:08.125 It's a faithfulness of a God, whose love and promises are Eternal and 258 00:15:08.125 --> 00:15:09.025 unbreakable. 259 00:15:09.625 --> 00:15:14.725 Even when we fail miserably. Who promises to protect us in the upcoming 260 00:15:14.725 --> 00:15:18.125 time of trouble. Who in promises to empower us 261 00:15:18.225 --> 00:15:22.625 us in our lives and in our Ministries and who will deliver us on the 262 00:15:22.625 --> 00:15:28.425 last day so that we will shine like the sky and the stars in heaven. 263 00:15:29.325 --> 00:15:29.725 Yes, 264 00:15:29.925 --> 00:15:33.325 the book of Daniel is about faithfulness Daniels faithfulness, for 265 00:15:33.325 --> 00:15:34.825 sure, but even more 266 00:15:34.825 --> 00:15:39.425 so about God's faithfulness in whom we can trust in Jesus name. 267 00:15:39.625 --> 00:15:40.325 Amen. 268 00:15:41.325 --> 00:15:44.625 And now May the peace of God, that passes all human understanding 269 00:15:44.925 --> 00:15:47.525 guard, your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 270 00:15:47.725 --> 00:15:48.125 Amen.
