WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.825 --> 00:00:01.825 Let us pray. 2 00:00:03.325 --> 00:00:07.225 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of our hearts be 3 00:00:07.225 --> 00:00:11.225 acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, our strength and our Redeemer. 4 00:00:11.625 --> 00:00:12.325 Amen. 5 00:00:14.225 --> 00:00:19.425 Today we commemorate a saint and sinner, just like us who struggled with 6 00:00:19.425 --> 00:00:20.825 an evil conscience. 7 00:00:21.525 --> 00:00:22.125 It is Saint 8 00:00:22.125 --> 00:00:27.425 Martin of Tours, of course that for me as one who served as a military 9 00:00:27.425 --> 00:00:31.625 chaplain is particularly important. A young man, 10 00:00:31.725 --> 00:00:36.925 Martin of Tours, who was born in 3/16 AD served as an officer in the 11 00:00:36.925 --> 00:00:37.725 Roman army. 12 00:00:38.525 --> 00:00:43.425 One day, he encountered a poor beggar shivering from the cold. Martin 13 00:00:43.425 --> 00:00:48.025 drew his sword, cut his military, Cape into and covered the beggar 14 00:00:48.025 --> 00:00:50.425 with 1/2. That night 15 00:00:50.525 --> 00:00:55.225 according to tradition Christ, appeared to Martin in a dream wearing 16 00:00:55.225 --> 00:00:58.825 half the cape when he had given to the bagger and allegedly, spoke 17 00:00:59.125 --> 00:01:02.125 Martin, a mere catechumen has clothed me. 18 00:01:02.925 --> 00:01:05.925 Martin eventually became a cleric, founded a monastery 19 00:01:05.925 --> 00:01:09.825 and over the years, his piety and devotion to Christ became so 20 00:01:09.825 --> 00:01:11.425 well-known that he was installed 21 00:01:11.425 --> 00:01:17.125 as the bishop of Tours France by popular demand. Following his death, 22 00:01:17.125 --> 00:01:21.125 the remaining half of Martin's cape became an object of veneration. 23 00:01:21.625 --> 00:01:22.025 French 24 00:01:22.025 --> 00:01:26.225 King's had the cape carried into battle and prepared a tent-like 25 00:01:26.225 --> 00:01:27.725 portable shrine for it. 26 00:01:28.525 --> 00:01:33.025 In Latin, the shrine was called a cappella, the priest who was given 27 00:01:33.025 --> 00:01:38.025 responsibility for the Coppa and the capella was called the 28 00:01:38.025 --> 00:01:38.725 Copalanus. 29 00:01:39.325 --> 00:01:42.525 It is through the reveration of these terms that we now 30 00:01:42.525 --> 00:01:48.325 have the English words for chapel and chaplain. Consequently since 31 00:01:48.325 --> 00:01:49.225 medieval days 32 00:01:49.225 --> 00:01:53.725 Martin of Tours has been identified as those who served with military 33 00:01:54.025 --> 00:01:57.025 chaplains. Of course for us Luther chaplains 34 00:01:57.025 --> 00:01:58.225 Martin of Tours, has an 35 00:01:58.425 --> 00:02:04.425 additional significant connection. On November 10th in 1483, Hans and 36 00:02:04.425 --> 00:02:06.425 Margaret Luther of Eisleben, 37 00:02:06.625 --> 00:02:09.225 Germany welcomed the birth of a new baby boy. 38 00:02:09.725 --> 00:02:11.725 And following the custom of the times 39 00:02:11.725 --> 00:02:14.425 they had their infant baptized the following day. 40 00:02:14.825 --> 00:02:17.725 And since November 11th was the date of the Christian Church, 41 00:02:17.725 --> 00:02:19.825 traditionally remembered in honored 42 00:02:19.825 --> 00:02:21.325 Saint Martin of Tours. 43 00:02:21.725 --> 00:02:24.425 The baby was named Martin Luther. 44 00:02:25.625 --> 00:02:28.725 Well, how am I squeezing that in today with our text? 45 00:02:29.325 --> 00:02:30.825 Well, as I started to begin with 46 00:02:30.825 --> 00:02:34.325 I think when they started to venerate and warriors brought this into 47 00:02:34.325 --> 00:02:39.225 battle with them, they're all trying to find a way to ease their 48 00:02:39.225 --> 00:02:41.325 conscience their dirty conscience. 49 00:02:41.725 --> 00:02:44.125 The filth, the stench of their sin. 50 00:02:44.625 --> 00:02:45.825 And I do that in Chapel 51 00:02:45.825 --> 00:02:46.425 today 52 00:02:46.425 --> 00:02:48.625 we all come from different backgrounds. 53 00:02:49.025 --> 00:02:53.225 Some of you come from rural areas some from suburban and some from 54 00:02:53.225 --> 00:02:55.225 urban. There is a diverseness of 55 00:02:55.425 --> 00:02:57.725 culture here among us at this seminary. 56 00:02:57.925 --> 00:03:01.725 And many of us were raised in different settings and situations. 57 00:03:02.225 --> 00:03:06.525 We all have different influences in situations of people who brought 58 00:03:06.525 --> 00:03:08.525 us to this place. Yet 59 00:03:08.525 --> 00:03:10.525 God has gotten us all here 60 00:03:10.625 --> 00:03:16.325 this morning in his Chapel, to hear his word, despite our own diverse 61 00:03:16.325 --> 00:03:20.125 backgrounds and our own diverse situations in life. 62 00:03:21.025 --> 00:03:24.725 There's one thing that we all have in common with Saint Martin of 63 00:03:24.725 --> 00:03:25.325 Tours 64 00:03:25.725 --> 00:03:30.325 and yes, even Martin Luther. We are all poor miserable 65 00:03:30.325 --> 00:03:35.825 sinners, who need forgiveness and salvation or we will die eternally 66 00:03:35.825 --> 00:03:36.525 in hell. 67 00:03:37.025 --> 00:03:40.725 We desire to have a clean conscience as our text mentions. 68 00:03:40.725 --> 00:03:44.325 You see the law has crushed us and we know that we have sinned against 69 00:03:44.325 --> 00:03:45.925 God and against our neighbor. 70 00:03:46.125 --> 00:03:47.625 We want to be clean. 71 00:03:48.025 --> 00:03:50.725 Yet, we can't seem to get that stench off of us. 72 00:03:51.125 --> 00:03:52.625 That stench of sin. 73 00:03:53.325 --> 00:03:53.425 Now, 74 00:03:53.425 --> 00:03:55.225 it's not a lack of trying. 75 00:03:55.325 --> 00:03:59.425 We try to rationalize away our sin and thinking it isn't as all that 76 00:03:59.425 --> 00:04:03.825 bad and nobody really got hurt or at least I'm not as bad as that guy. 77 00:04:04.225 --> 00:04:07.925 Well, we may try to deny it all together by redefining terms and 78 00:04:07.925 --> 00:04:09.025 revaluing 79 00:04:09.125 --> 00:04:10.925 what is a sin or not. 80 00:04:11.725 --> 00:04:15.525 Maybe we even think that we can do it in the dark of night and no one 81 00:04:15.525 --> 00:04:17.325 really really know about it. 82 00:04:18.025 --> 00:04:23.125 Yet, you know, and I know that our conscience is lolled asleep or even 83 00:04:23.125 --> 00:04:23.825 seared. 84 00:04:23.825 --> 00:04:27.325 It will end up filling us with guilt and shame. 85 00:04:27.725 --> 00:04:31.625 We need forgiveness to have our conscience completely cleaned. 86 00:04:32.125 --> 00:04:32.925 In our text 87 00:04:32.925 --> 00:04:37.325 we are reminded that the priest stood day after day ministering and 88 00:04:37.325 --> 00:04:42.625 offering the sacrifices over and over hoping to get that stench of sin 89 00:04:42.625 --> 00:04:46.725 off the people to clean their conscience to get them forgiveness. 90 00:04:47.325 --> 00:04:52.425 In verse 11 of our tax reminds us that it never takes away sins. 91 00:04:53.225 --> 00:04:55.625 And our text does not leave us hopeless. 92 00:04:55.925 --> 00:04:57.825 Listen again to this passage. 93 00:04:58.425 --> 00:05:02.625 Therefore brothers have boldness to enter the holiest by the blood of 94 00:05:02.625 --> 00:05:07.525 Jesus, by a new and living way, which he consecrated for us through 95 00:05:07.525 --> 00:05:08.225 the veil. 96 00:05:08.225 --> 00:05:09.625 That is his flesh. 97 00:05:09.925 --> 00:05:12.725 And having a high priest over the house of God. 98 00:05:13.025 --> 00:05:16.925 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance 99 00:05:17.025 --> 00:05:21.525 of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our 100 00:05:21.525 --> 00:05:24.225 bodies washed with pure water. 101 00:05:25.425 --> 00:05:28.725 Did you hear what it said about us and the presence of God? 102 00:05:29.425 --> 00:05:34.825 We with the stench of sin on us can now come to God in boldness and 103 00:05:34.825 --> 00:05:40.025 confidence because of the blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God.
