WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.125 --> 00:00:02.725 Everyone, you meet 2 00:00:03.825 --> 00:00:04.625 is someone. 3 00:00:05.825 --> 00:00:10.325 Who has read been redeemed by the crucified and risen Christ. 4 00:00:11.525 --> 00:00:17.325 Now, not everyone believes that, not everyone receives that gift, many 5 00:00:17.325 --> 00:00:18.825 people turn away from it. 6 00:00:18.825 --> 00:00:21.825 They don't want to have anything to do with it and they're not 7 00:00:21.825 --> 00:00:28.325 believers, but Christ came and suffered and died and rose and made 8 00:00:28.325 --> 00:00:31.225 that sacrifice for all people. 9 00:00:31.725 --> 00:00:38.025 Not just for some, not just for a small group, but all people, he came 10 00:00:38.125 --> 00:00:41.225 in order to bring life and salvation to them. 11 00:00:43.125 --> 00:00:44.925 And so it is here 12 00:00:44.925 --> 00:00:46.525 even in our text for today. 13 00:00:47.325 --> 00:00:52.525 Paul is celebrating this fact that these Saints here in Philippi have 14 00:00:52.525 --> 00:00:56.825 received this gift, believe this gift of Salvation in Christ. 15 00:00:57.025 --> 00:00:58.825 And he says, I thank my God 16 00:00:58.825 --> 00:01:03.025 every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you 17 00:01:03.025 --> 00:01:06.825 I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from 18 00:01:06.825 --> 00:01:07.425 the first day 19 00:01:07.425 --> 00:01:11.125 until now. Being confident of this that he who began 20 00:01:11.225 --> 00:01:15.325 a good work in, you will carry it on to completion until the day 21 00:01:15.525 --> 00:01:17.325 of Christ Jesus. 22 00:01:18.125 --> 00:01:19.325 It is great 23 00:01:19.325 --> 00:01:26.425 joy to build to know that this salvation of Jesus Christ is ours. 24 00:01:26.625 --> 00:01:29.225 And it's a gift that has been given to us. 25 00:01:29.825 --> 00:01:35.625 You see sin causes us to live in darkness and in fear and and it's a 26 00:01:36.025 --> 00:01:40.325 really a bad place to be in to be a have to live in this the sin of 27 00:01:40.325 --> 00:01:41.125 darkness. 28 00:01:41.825 --> 00:01:49.425 But the joy, the joy is that we have this light, this light of Jesus 29 00:01:49.425 --> 00:01:54.325 Christ that shines in our lives and tells us you are forgiven. 30 00:01:54.525 --> 00:01:59.125 You are a child of God, you'll have eternal life in heaven, and this 31 00:01:59.125 --> 00:02:01.725 is all for you for the taking. 32 00:02:02.525 --> 00:02:08.325 So you see everyone, we meet is someone who has been redeemed by the 33 00:02:08.325 --> 00:02:11.225 crucified and risen Christ, and this 34 00:02:11.425 --> 00:02:13.325 brings us great joy. 35 00:02:14.925 --> 00:02:19.825 But sometimes that joy can turn into despair. 36 00:02:21.525 --> 00:02:22.025 So, 37 00:02:23.125 --> 00:02:28.425 there is this town about 10.000 people in the midwest. 38 00:02:28.525 --> 00:02:30.925 Very agricultural community. 39 00:02:32.125 --> 00:02:36.925 There are two men in that town, Steve and Bill. 40 00:02:38.325 --> 00:02:40.225 They went to elementary school together. 41 00:02:40.225 --> 00:02:41.725 They went to high school together. 42 00:02:41.725 --> 00:02:45.125 They stayed in the community had jobs their businesses. 43 00:02:45.125 --> 00:02:47.925 Had families went to the same Lutheran Church. 44 00:02:48.625 --> 00:02:50.625 So they've been together a long time. 45 00:02:51.825 --> 00:02:55.525 And this particular Lutheran Church ended up in a major conflict, 46 00:02:55.525 --> 00:02:59.725 primarily because of the pastor, and with the pastor did Pastor left 47 00:02:59.725 --> 00:03:02.025 resigned and the church was still in a mess. 48 00:03:02.025 --> 00:03:04.825 They got an interim pastor to come in, to build to help them. 49 00:03:05.325 --> 00:03:06.725 So, they're working on things. 50 00:03:07.125 --> 00:03:11.025 But Steve and Bill ended up on opposite sides of this conflicted 51 00:03:11.025 --> 00:03:15.725 situation in the church, and it continued to remain that way even 52 00:03:15.725 --> 00:03:19.025 though they were in an interim, pastor situation. 53 00:03:20.825 --> 00:03:23.325 So it's a January evening. 54 00:03:24.225 --> 00:03:26.225 It's very cold outside. 55 00:03:26.525 --> 00:03:31.925 Snow is lightly falling and they have a congregational voters meeting. 56 00:03:33.225 --> 00:03:36.725 And Steve is the treasurer of the congregation. 57 00:03:36.725 --> 00:03:40.125 So he is giving his report his financial report. 58 00:03:40.725 --> 00:03:42.625 He's being challenged by this. 59 00:03:43.025 --> 00:03:47.925 People are asking very, very deep questions accusations are being made 60 00:03:47.925 --> 00:03:52.325 about the report suspicion is around the report, and it's getting 61 00:03:52.325 --> 00:03:53.625 really heated. 62 00:03:54.625 --> 00:03:58.925 And Bill, who's the president of the congregation stands up in the 63 00:03:58.925 --> 00:04:00.925 midst of this voters assembly. 64 00:04:01.025 --> 00:04:05.625 And he says, well, you know, Steve, you never really were that great 65 00:04:05.625 --> 00:04:06.825 at math in high school. 66 00:04:06.825 --> 00:04:09.025 In fact, I think you failed a math class. 67 00:04:09.025 --> 00:04:11.925 So you see, it doesn't surprise me that you're probably getting all 68 00:04:11.925 --> 00:04:14.525 these questions and you haven't done very well as a Treasurer. 69 00:04:14.525 --> 00:04:18.125 Maybe you should just resign as a Treasurer of this congregation. 70 00:04:18.225 --> 00:04:20.825 You haven't done as much good after all. 71 00:04:21.825 --> 00:04:24.325 Wow, silence, right. 72 00:04:24.325 --> 00:04:27.825 Everyone was surprised by by that comment. 73 00:04:29.125 --> 00:04:30.825 Steve was angered by it. 74 00:04:31.325 --> 00:04:32.725 He was so upset 75 00:04:32.725 --> 00:04:36.925 and so angry that this, this had been said in such a gathering. 76 00:04:36.925 --> 00:04:38.425 He was embarrassed by it. 77 00:04:39.925 --> 00:04:40.625 Well, the interim 78 00:04:40.625 --> 00:04:42.925 Pastor met with both of them. 79 00:04:44.025 --> 00:04:48.625 And Bill was able to be able to confess his sin to Steve and asked for 80 00:04:48.625 --> 00:04:50.825 forgiveness, but Steve refused. 81 00:04:51.925 --> 00:04:53.225 I will not forgive you. 82 00:04:53.725 --> 00:04:56.225 I am never going to forgive you for what you've done. 83 00:04:56.725 --> 00:04:57.925 You've embarrassed me. 84 00:04:58.325 --> 00:05:00.125 You've made me a laughingstock. 85 00:05:01.025 --> 00:05:02.825 I am not going to forgive you. 86 00:05:02.825 --> 00:05:05.725 And so days and weeks and months, go on. 87 00:05:06.025 --> 00:05:09.825 And Steve is not willing to forgive Bill for what he had done. 88 00:05:10.725 --> 00:05:15.525 In fact, if you brought up Bill's name in Steve's presence, he would 89 00:05:15.525 --> 00:05:20.625 let out this great gasp of air, roll his eyes and shake his head. 90 00:05:21.925 --> 00:05:24.425 When he was shopping in town going to one of the stores. 91 00:05:24.725 --> 00:05:28.925 If Steve saw Bill, he would give thanks to God if he didn't have to 92 00:05:28.925 --> 00:05:30.625 have any interaction with Bill. 93 00:05:31.925 --> 00:05:33.625 He go to worship on Sunday morning 94 00:05:33.625 --> 00:05:37.825 and for some reason Bill wasn't there Steve would give thanks to God 95 00:05:37.825 --> 00:05:40.125 that bill didn't show up in church that Sunday. 96 00:05:41.525 --> 00:05:43.625 And this is a small rural area 97 00:05:43.825 --> 00:05:47.425 so this is part of the cultural aspect of this that they published 98 00:05:47.425 --> 00:05:48.425 this newspaper. 99 00:05:48.825 --> 00:05:52.025 And if you ever had any kind of an encounter with law enforcement, 100 00:05:52.025 --> 00:05:54.425 they always published it in the newspaper. 101 00:05:54.925 --> 00:05:58.525 So here's Steve is looking through the newspaper and their Bill's name 102 00:05:58.525 --> 00:06:02.825 is he had gotten pulled over for getting a speeding ticket, had given 103 00:06:02.825 --> 00:06:04.525 this really huge fine. 104 00:06:05.125 --> 00:06:09.725 And so Steve was giving thanks to God finally some justice in the 105 00:06:09.725 --> 00:06:10.525 world. 106 00:06:11.725 --> 00:06:17.225 This is how it went on, when on, and on, because he did not want to 107 00:06:17.925 --> 00:06:21.425 forgive Bill for what he had done during that congregational meeting. 108 00:06:23.225 --> 00:06:24.325 Well, it's a year later. 109 00:06:24.625 --> 00:06:25.925 It's in January again. 110 00:06:27.425 --> 00:06:30.825 And it is really snowing, really hard. 111 00:06:30.825 --> 00:06:32.925 And it is cold outside. 112 00:06:33.625 --> 00:06:36.125 And the worst part of it is, the wind is blowing. 113 00:06:36.825 --> 00:06:38.925 So these are blizzard conditions. 114 00:06:40.125 --> 00:06:44.625 And, and Steve was in another town about 30 minutes away making his 115 00:06:44.625 --> 00:06:47.525 way home, didn't quite get all the way home because he got caught up 116 00:06:47.525 --> 00:06:48.525 in this blizzard. 117 00:06:49.025 --> 00:06:53.125 His truck goes off the road into the ditch, and he's stuck there and 118 00:06:53.125 --> 00:06:56.425 to add additional concern to the situation 119 00:06:56.725 --> 00:06:57.625 he's a diabetic. 120 00:06:57.625 --> 00:07:00.525 He didn't eat right that day hadn't had his medication and he was 121 00:07:00.525 --> 00:07:03.025 having a diabetic episode. 122 00:07:03.425 --> 00:07:05.725 He calls 911 on his cell phone. 123 00:07:06.325 --> 00:07:06.525 Now 124 00:07:06.525 --> 00:07:09.825 this is another cultural thing about small town 125 00:07:09.925 --> 00:07:16.525 agricultural kind of situation. When you call 911 and you need people 126 00:07:16.525 --> 00:07:20.325 to help you the First Responders many times are volunteers. 127 00:07:21.125 --> 00:07:25.125 So they had a volunteer fire department Bill was on the volunteer fire 128 00:07:25.125 --> 00:07:25.925 department. 129 00:07:25.925 --> 00:07:29.225 You heard that Steve a stranded had a good idea probably where he was 130 00:07:29.225 --> 00:07:31.125 at and he had a snowmobile. 131 00:07:31.625 --> 00:07:34.825 So he gets on the snowmobile and he goes out and he finds him puts 132 00:07:34.825 --> 00:07:35.225 him on 133 00:07:35.225 --> 00:07:38.325 and takes him to the hospital and they're stuck there at the hospital 134 00:07:38.325 --> 00:07:39.725 because he can't get home 135 00:07:39.925 --> 00:07:44.025 because of the blizzard. They're able to stabilize Steve's condition 136 00:07:44.425 --> 00:07:46.625 Bill walks in and Steve says to him. 137 00:07:46.625 --> 00:07:47.325 Why did you do that? 138 00:07:47.325 --> 00:07:48.625 Why did you come looking for me? 139 00:07:49.225 --> 00:07:51.125 You could have just left me out there to die. 140 00:07:51.125 --> 00:07:53.225 Isn't that what you what you would have wanted? 141 00:07:55.025 --> 00:07:56.025 Bill says, no. 142 00:07:57.525 --> 00:07:59.425 We are both children of God. 143 00:07:59.425 --> 00:08:01.025 We go to the same church. 144 00:08:02.625 --> 00:08:07.425 We both believe in Jesus Christ, and and you're one of God's children. 145 00:08:07.525 --> 00:08:11.625 And, you know, I just did what I did to be able to help you and to 146 00:08:11.625 --> 00:08:16.925 care for you and Steve, couldn't understand that. You see, Steve did 147 00:08:16.925 --> 00:08:24.025 not look at Bill as someone who was Redeemed by the crucified and 148 00:08:24.025 --> 00:08:25.125 risen Christ. 149 00:08:26.225 --> 00:08:29.025 But Bill with the help of the interim pastor. 150 00:08:30.025 --> 00:08:36.325 Looked at Steve as someone who was Redeemed by the crucified and risen 151 00:08:36.325 --> 00:08:37.225 Christ. 152 00:08:38.525 --> 00:08:41.125 Now, it took some time and some effort 153 00:08:42.525 --> 00:08:45.725 but the interim pastor kept working with the situation and kept 154 00:08:45.725 --> 00:08:49.825 working with Steve, and eventually, he was able to get to the point 155 00:08:50.025 --> 00:08:55.725 where he could forgive Bill, and also confess his own sins of anger, 156 00:08:55.925 --> 00:09:00.325 and bitterness, and all the other things he thought and spoke against 157 00:09:00.325 --> 00:09:01.125 against Bill. 158 00:09:02.025 --> 00:09:08.425 And in time, there was reconciliation. And in time, there was peace and 159 00:09:08.425 --> 00:09:12.025 there was joy because they 160 00:09:12.425 --> 00:09:16.825 could give thanks to God and remember and see each other. 161 00:09:18.025 --> 00:09:24.925 As people of God, Redeemed, by the crucified and risen Christ, and 162 00:09:24.925 --> 00:09:26.425 what a joy that is. 163 00:09:27.925 --> 00:09:28.425 You know 164 00:09:29.625 --> 00:09:32.125 ministry can be kind of a messy thing. 165 00:09:33.225 --> 00:09:36.125 Those of us who are in Ministry can tell you that and we can tell you 166 00:09:36.125 --> 00:09:38.225 stories of the messiness of ministry. 167 00:09:38.225 --> 00:09:41.825 And those of you who are about ready to go into Ministry, even receive 168 00:09:41.825 --> 00:09:44.325 your calls today will discover very quickly 169 00:09:44.325 --> 00:09:47.625 how many messy Ministry can be. And why is it so messy? 170 00:09:47.925 --> 00:09:54.125 It's messy because of Sin. Sin raises its head and it has an impact 171 00:09:54.125 --> 00:09:57.025 upon us, and sometimes, we can't even control. 172 00:09:57.525 --> 00:10:02.125 We sin other people's sin against us, and it's difficult. 173 00:10:03.025 --> 00:10:06.225 And it's not always easy, sometimes to forgive. 174 00:10:06.325 --> 00:10:07.325 We don't want to forgive. 175 00:10:07.325 --> 00:10:11.125 We don't think the other person deserves to be forgiven and we act 176 00:10:11.125 --> 00:10:15.525 more like the world, then we act like Christians. 177 00:10:17.225 --> 00:10:20.125 But they had a really good interim 178 00:10:20.125 --> 00:10:20.825 Pastor. 179 00:10:21.725 --> 00:10:23.125 He didn't push the issue. 180 00:10:24.325 --> 00:10:27.125 He didn't make a big deal about it about himself or anything. 181 00:10:27.125 --> 00:10:32.925 He met with them and carefully and pastorally lead and talked to them and 182 00:10:32.925 --> 00:10:35.525 guided them and shared scripture with them. 183 00:10:36.125 --> 00:10:40.325 And notice how they came to being able to forgive each other at 184 00:10:40.325 --> 00:10:41.525 different times. 185 00:10:42.325 --> 00:10:48.625 But there that Pastor was doing faithfully, what he needed to do to 186 00:10:48.625 --> 00:10:51.725 bring the word of God to bear upon the situation. 187 00:10:53.525 --> 00:10:58.925 It is a joy to be in Ministry even in the midst of the messiness 188 00:10:58.925 --> 00:11:00.325 that comes with it. 189 00:11:01.025 --> 00:11:07.325 It'll be a joy to be able to see our fellow Christian brothers and 190 00:11:07.325 --> 00:11:07.925 sisters here 191 00:11:07.925 --> 00:11:08.225 today 192 00:11:08.225 --> 00:11:10.925 who are going to receive calls into the ministry. 193 00:11:11.225 --> 00:11:14.325 What a joy that it's going to be.
