WEBVTT 00:00.700 --> 00:02.600 Grace, mercy, and peace 00:02.600 --> 00:07.000 be unto you from God, our Father and from our Lord, and Savior Jesus 00:07.000 --> 00:07.800 Christ. 00:07.800 --> 00:08.500 Amen. 00:09.000 --> 00:10.500 The text is the gospel 00:10.500 --> 00:14.900 read to you just a few moments ago from Luke chapter 18, 00:16.800 --> 00:17.900 Brothers and sisters 00:17.900 --> 00:26.200 if you are on social media at all, you've likely seen the clips. A 00:26.200 --> 00:30.300 woman with a problem and a attitude. 00:31.200 --> 00:35.800 She's convinced that she's been wronged and she's demanding to see the 00:35.800 --> 00:43.300 manager or in our case, she's demanding to see the pastor. 00:44.300 --> 00:46.600 She's not going to take no for an answer. 00:48.200 --> 00:50.300 She is persistent. 00:51.400 --> 00:53.100 She wants Justice. 00:54.100 --> 00:59.500 She wants things to be the way they were supposed to be to be set, 00:59.500 --> 00:59.800 right? 01:00.600 --> 01:05.800 Often, it's over something trivial or minor but she's turned it into a 01:05.800 --> 01:06.700 big deal. 01:08.000 --> 01:09.200 She won't let it go. 01:11.000 --> 01:12.900 On the internet, they have a name for her. 01:14.300 --> 01:15.600 They call her Karen. 01:17.500 --> 01:22.400 In today's text, it would seem that Jesus posted a clip like that. 01:23.300 --> 01:28.300 Showing us a Karen to teach us how we're supposed to pray and not lose 01:28.300 --> 01:28.900 heart. 01:30.000 --> 01:32.200 And at first glance, that's how St. 01:32.200 --> 01:35.000 Luke seems to be interpreting the parable. 01:36.700 --> 01:42.100 Remember a parable is a simple story with a much deeper spiritual 01:42.100 --> 01:43.500 meaning behind it. 01:44.500 --> 01:48.100 It seems to be saying that if we are persistent enough, 01:49.600 --> 01:53.200 and if we can gather enough of our friends together in our prayer 01:53.200 --> 01:53.800 chain, 01:55.100 --> 01:56.500 and join us in praying. 01:56.500 --> 01:59.800 We can nag God until we wear him down and got 02:00.000 --> 02:03.200 I will do for us whatever we want him to do. 02:04.300 --> 02:06.700 But that would be a misinterpretation of the parable. 02:07.700 --> 02:10.300 And clearly a misunderstanding of Prayer. 02:11.800 --> 02:15.000 And a misunderstanding of our good and gracious, God. 02:17.000 --> 02:20.100 That would make it all about you and about me. 02:21.300 --> 02:25.400 And as every Karen needs to hear at some point or another, it ain't 02:25.400 --> 02:26.500 about you. 02:28.800 --> 02:33.600 We need to see this parable however and interpret it in the context of 02:33.600 --> 02:34.700 the Gospel of St. 02:34.700 --> 02:35.200 Luke. 02:36.300 --> 02:40.700 Jesus had already foretold two times that they were on their way to 02:40.700 --> 02:44.600 Jerusalem, that his passion was drawing near the triumphal 02:44.600 --> 02:47.100 entry was maybe just days ahead. 02:48.400 --> 02:49.600 In chapter 17 02:49.600 --> 02:52.900 they had asked him about the coming of the kingdom of God. 02:54.000 --> 02:58.000 And so he began to teach his disciples about what they might expect 02:58.000 --> 02:59.800 during those difficult 03:00.000 --> 03:05.600 days, that were soon to come, but also about the ominous days would 03:05.600 --> 03:11.100 come in the time in between his Ascension and his return in glory, 03:13.100 --> 03:16.400 In the midst of that, then he tells this parable. 03:17.500 --> 03:21.100 And at the end of today's lesson, he asked some very pointed 03:21.100 --> 03:25.000 questions, he returns once again to the coming of the Son of Man. 03:26.300 --> 03:30.600 And so with these brackets around the text, we need to interpret it 03:31.700 --> 03:33.100 eschatologically. 03:34.200 --> 03:36.400 We need to seek that deeper meaning. 03:38.700 --> 03:40.100 And so there was a judge. 03:41.000 --> 03:44.000 Who neither feared God nor respected, man. 03:44.100 --> 03:47.500 He was what we call an unjust judge. 03:48.300 --> 03:51.100 He didn't really care about God's will. 03:52.200 --> 03:54.300 He didn't care about his neighbors. 03:55.400 --> 03:59.100 He didn't care about the poor and oppressed people in his community. 04:00.400 --> 04:03.100 It seems, he really didn't care about Justice. 04:04.500 --> 04:07.700 He didn't seem to care about what other people thought of him. 04:09.000 --> 04:14.100 In this story, he had all of the power. The power to make a decision. 04:14.200 --> 04:19.000 The power to do the right thing. The power to render Justice. 04:21.700 --> 04:22.900 But he was a jerk. 04:25.200 --> 04:26.500 And then there was this Widow. 04:27.500 --> 04:32.800 Who kept coming to him, saying, give me Justice against my adversary. 04:34.200 --> 04:38.300 Now a widow, typically in those days was very vulnerable, she was 04:38.300 --> 04:39.300 powerless. 04:40.300 --> 04:43.600 And it would seem that someone had wronged her treated her badly, 04:43.600 --> 04:46.100 abused her, taking advantage of her. 04:47.400 --> 04:50.300 And all she wanted was Justice. 04:51.200 --> 04:55.100 All she wanted was somebody to be on her side to make things right 04:55.100 --> 04:55.800 again. 04:57.700 --> 04:59.300 So, she went to the judge. 05:00.200 --> 05:02.600 She went to the judge repeatedly, 05:03.800 --> 05:06.900 persistently, she didn't give up. 05:06.900 --> 05:09.300 She just kept coming to him. 05:11.400 --> 05:14.500 And at first, the judge refused, he just blew her off. 05:14.600 --> 05:18.700 Remember he was an unjust judge, so maybe he was just waiting for a 05:18.700 --> 05:19.500 bribe. 05:21.400 --> 05:24.600 Clearly, he didn't understand or care about this Widow. 05:26.500 --> 05:29.600 And yet in the end of the story, he relented, 05:30.700 --> 05:31.900 he caved. 05:32.900 --> 05:34.900 He thought to himself though 05:34.900 --> 05:39.100 I neither fear God nor respect man yet because this woman is 05:39.100 --> 05:40.100 bothering me. 05:40.400 --> 05:44.400 I will give her justice so that she will not beat me down by your 05:44.400 --> 05:45.900 continual coming. 05:46.800 --> 05:50.700 It wasn't that he suddenly turned into some kind of a good guy and 05:50.700 --> 05:52.800 showed any compassion for this Widow. 05:54.800 --> 05:56.700 He just got tired of her nagging. 05:59.700 --> 05:59.800 He was 06:00.000 --> 06:02.900 afraid, she was going to beat him up. 06:03.900 --> 06:06.400 Literally give them a black eye. 06:07.400 --> 06:10.800 Wreck his reputation, embarrass him. 06:12.200 --> 06:13.900 And so he gave her what she wanted. 06:13.900 --> 06:15.600 Just to shut her up. 06:17.400 --> 06:20.200 And then Jesus, made this application. 06:21.700 --> 06:25.600 Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will 06:25.600 --> 06:29.900 not God, give Justice to the elect who cry to him day and night. 06:29.900 --> 06:32.100 Will he delay long over them? 06:33.700 --> 06:38.200 I tell, you no, He will give them Justice speedily. 06:39.900 --> 06:41.300 Now is the point of this 06:41.800 --> 06:46.600 Parable to compare our good and gracious God to this unrighteous 06:46.600 --> 06:47.400 judge. 06:48.300 --> 06:52.600 Well, that can't be right the to have absolutely nothing in common. 06:56.200 --> 06:59.600 I believe that this is one of those hyperboles that 07:00.000 --> 07:05.200 Jesus often used to talk about how much more. 07:06.900 --> 07:10.200 For example, you remember the time when Jesus was talking about the 07:10.200 --> 07:11.800 Lilies of the Field, 07:12.600 --> 07:18.600 and the birds of the air. And he said how much more will your heavenly 07:18.600 --> 07:20.700 Father provide for you 07:20.700 --> 07:22.400 oh you of little faith? 07:24.000 --> 07:28.200 Another time he was teaching about prayer and he said if you then who 07:28.200 --> 07:34.900 are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more 07:35.100 --> 07:39.200 will your heavenly Father give to those give the Holy Spirit to those 07:39.200 --> 07:40.400 who ask him? 07:41.900 --> 07:43.200 How much more? 07:44.300 --> 07:49.100 That's what Jesus was doing here, if an unjust judge would help a 07:49.100 --> 07:50.500 persistent Widow. 07:51.900 --> 07:55.200 How much more will God our gracious 07:55.200 --> 07:59.700 Heavenly Father, help us when we cry out to him in persistent prayer. 08:01.700 --> 08:07.900 Jesus said he will indeed, give us Justice and he will do so speedily. 08:09.600 --> 08:15.600 And so Luke rightly concluded, we ought always to pray and never to 08:15.600 --> 08:16.600 lose heart. 08:19.800 --> 08:24.700 But again, this simple story has a much deeper meaning. 08:25.800 --> 08:31.300 And again we need to read it in its context and again we need to look 08:31.300 --> 08:36.400 at it eschatologically and listen to the questions that Jesus asked 08:36.400 --> 08:37.799 after the parable. 08:39.100 --> 08:43.799 He said, will not God, give Justice to his elect who cry to him day 08:43.799 --> 08:44.600 and night. 08:46.100 --> 08:48.200 Will he delay long over them? 08:49.300 --> 08:55.800 I tell you he will give them Justice speedily when the Son of Man 08:55.800 --> 08:56.700 comes. 08:57.400 --> 08:59.100 Will he find faith on Earth? 09:01.800 --> 09:04.800 Those aren't just rhetorical questions. 09:06.000 --> 09:08.400 Jesus is absolutely serious. 09:08.800 --> 09:15.700 This is a parable about persistent prayer but it has a special focus. 09:17.300 --> 09:20.600 Jesus was teaching about the coming of the kingdom of God. 09:21.900 --> 09:25.700 And so, he was warning and preparing them for the days that were soon 09:25.700 --> 09:26.400 to come. 09:26.600 --> 09:29.000 He was now on his way to Jerusalem. 09:30.100 --> 09:32.200 And there he would soon incur 09:32.200 --> 09:34.800 all kinds of Injustice. 09:36.400 --> 09:40.600 In order to secure God's justice for them, and for us. 09:42.200 --> 09:47.000 It was there in Jerusalem, that Jesus took the verdict of an unjust 09:47.000 --> 09:47.900 judge. 09:49.300 --> 09:54.100 He bore your sin and the punishment for your sin on a cross. 09:55.000 --> 09:56.500 They are Jesus defeated 09:56.500 --> 09:58.500 all of your adversaries, 10:00.000 --> 10:01.800 sin, death and Hell. 10:03.200 --> 10:06.600 And once they've been defeated life is yours, 10:07.900 --> 10:09.900 and forgiveness is yours. 10:11.000 --> 10:13.900 And God's mercy and grace are yours. 10:16.400 --> 10:21.200 But Jesus was also preparing them and us for these days in between. 10:22.400 --> 10:25.800 These times in between his Ascension and his return. 10:27.200 --> 10:30.600 He would send those disciples out into a hostile world. 10:31.800 --> 10:36.500 And there they would incur all kinds of injustices, 10:37.900 --> 10:41.000 sufferings, persecution. 10:42.500 --> 10:44.600 Out in that world they would be vulnerable. 10:44.600 --> 10:49.500 They would long for Jesus to come once again and to set things right. 10:49.700 --> 10:54.600 In those days they would cry out for justice O Lord how long 10:56.700 --> 10:59.800 and then they would cry Maranatha. 11:00.800 --> 11:02.900 O, Lord, come. 11:04.900 --> 11:09.000 That's been the persistent prayer of the church throughout the ages. 11:10.900 --> 11:13.500 We're waiting for our Lord's return. 11:14.500 --> 11:18.700 And in these days, we find ourselves in the same kind of situation a 11:18.700 --> 11:20.400 hostile world. 11:21.500 --> 11:25.500 A post-christian anti-christian world. 11:26.200 --> 11:29.200 A world that's filled with all kinds of jerks. 11:30.600 --> 11:32.900 Who just don't care about God's will. 11:35.000 --> 11:38.800 Who don't care about the injustices that they inflict upon other 11:38.800 --> 11:42.800 people, or the injustices that they inflict upon us. 11:45.000 --> 11:47.900 In those times, we too are tempted to lose heart. 11:49.700 --> 11:55.800 To look to heaven and to raise a fist and say, God, this just isn't 11:55.800 --> 11:59.800 fair, this isn't right, make things right, once again. 12:00.200 --> 12:01.900 Give us Justice. 12:04.900 --> 12:10.100 But here, once again today, the promise that Jesus made 12:11.700 --> 12:18.300 will not God, give Justice to his elect who cry out to him day and 12:18.300 --> 12:18.900 night. 12:20.300 --> 12:22.600 Will he delay long over them? 12:23.900 --> 12:30.200 I tell you he will give Justice to them and he will give it speedily. 12:32.800 --> 12:35.200 Jesus promised that he is coming again 12:36.300 --> 12:39.500 in power and great glory to be our judge. 12:40.600 --> 12:44.500 And when he comes all things will be set, right. 12:46.200 --> 12:47.900 Justice will be given. 12:48.900 --> 12:54.900 Creation will be restored. Our bodies will be raised glorious 12:54.900 --> 12:59.900 transformed, no longer subject to pain or suffering 13:00.000 --> 13:02.700 or the ills of this world 13:03.700 --> 13:04.800 or even death. 13:06.500 --> 13:09.100 We will be at home with him in his kingdom. 13:10.600 --> 13:13.800 This is what we Christians have to look forward to. 13:15.200 --> 13:16.900 This is what we hope for. 13:16.900 --> 13:20.700 This is what we long for this is, what keeps us in the faith. 13:22.200 --> 13:27.900 This gives us the boldness and the confidence that we need to pray to 13:27.900 --> 13:33.900 our dear Father in Heaven as dear children, ask their fathers. 13:35.200 --> 13:40.100 This is what gives us the courage to pray persistently. 13:41.800 --> 13:45.600 Maranatha O, Lord come. 13:47.900 --> 13:49.400 In the name of Jesus. 13:50.100 --> 13:50.800 Amen. 13:51.900 --> 13:55.400 And may the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding 13:55.600 --> 13:58.600 keep your hearts and minds in Christ 13:58.600 --> 13:59.400 Jesus. 14:00.300 --> 14:00.800 Amen.
