WEBVTT 00:00.900 --> 00:02.900 Grace, mercy, and peace 00:02.900 --> 00:06.500 be unto you from God, our Father and from our Lord, and Savior Jesus 00:06.500 --> 00:07.200 Christ. 00:07.700 --> 00:08.300 Amen. 00:08.800 --> 00:12.500 The text is the lesson read to you a few moments ago, it's the 00:12.500 --> 00:18.400 introduction to the reign of one who is called "The Good King Hezekiah." 00:19.500 --> 00:25.700 It was 715 BC when there was a transition in the monarchy similar to 00:25.700 --> 00:28.800 what we've witnessed in England in the last few days. 00:29.600 --> 00:34.200 Hezekiah, whose name means the Lord is my strength ascended, the 00:34.200 --> 00:39.800 throne and immediately set in motion a complete reversal of all the 00:39.800 --> 00:41.800 policies of his predecessor 00:42.600 --> 00:50.100 his father, King Ahaz. Who was one of the most corrupt and evil Kings 00:50.100 --> 00:52.300 in all of the history of Judah. 00:53.500 --> 00:58.500 Under a Ahaz's reign, the religious life of God's people fell to an 00:58.500 --> 01:04.000 all-time low. He looted, and then he shuddered the doors of the 01:04.000 --> 01:06.400 temple, so that no one could worship there. 01:07.500 --> 01:12.700 He offered sacrifices in the high places to all of the pagan idols. 01:13.600 --> 01:16.100 He even sacrificed one of his own children. 01:16.100 --> 01:18.700 The man was an abomination. 01:20.600 --> 01:27.100 And so Hezekiah set out on a nationwide Reformation to completely wipe 01:27.100 --> 01:33.200 out all vestiges of these false gods. He demolished the idols and 01:33.200 --> 01:38.700 their altars. He even destroyed the bronze serpent that Moses had made 01:38.700 --> 01:42.700 in the wilderness because as we heard, the people had begun to offer 01:42.700 --> 01:46.000 sacrifices, they worshipped it as an idol. 01:47.500 --> 01:52.000 And so Hezekiah reopened and cleansed the temple. 01:53.300 --> 01:57.900 He renewed the sacrifices. He reinstituted the celebration of the 01:57.900 --> 02:02.600 Passover. And there was a revival that came among God's people as they 02:02.600 --> 02:05.700 returned to the Lord and his word. 02:07.800 --> 02:11.900 We're told that Hezekiah held fast to the Lord. 02:13.400 --> 02:14.600 He was faithful. 02:16.100 --> 02:21.300 He was tenacious. He didn't depart from following him but kept the 02:21.300 --> 02:23.000 Commandments of the Lord. 02:24.700 --> 02:26.200 And the Lord was with him. 02:27.600 --> 02:29.000 Whenever he went out 02:30.300 --> 02:31.400 he prospered. 02:33.300 --> 02:34.600 He succeeded. 02:36.500 --> 02:39.800 Then Hezekiah turned his attention to rebuilding the army. 02:41.300 --> 02:43.900 Refortifying, the city of Jerusalem. 02:44.800 --> 02:48.800 He even built a secret tunnel to build what to bring water into the 02:48.800 --> 02:50.700 city, and the event of a siege. 02:52.200 --> 02:57.600 He defeated the the Philistines who had been harassing Judah for 02:57.600 --> 02:58.900 hundreds of years. 03:00.400 --> 03:04.200 He rebelled against the Assyrians who had already conquered a number 03:04.200 --> 03:06.000 of the neighboring nations. 03:08.000 --> 03:09.300 And the Lord was with him. 03:10.600 --> 03:16.400 And whenever he went out, he prospered. He succeeded. 03:18.300 --> 03:23.700 We Lutheran's aren't always comfortable with words like prospered and 03:23.700 --> 03:24.800 succeeded. 03:25.700 --> 03:28.700 We often associate them with a Theology of Glory. 03:30.100 --> 03:35.400 But the scriptures use several different words to describe people as 03:35.400 --> 03:40.200 prosperous and successful. In the Book of Genesis, we hear that God 03:40.200 --> 03:44.600 blessed the prophets Abraham, Isaac 03:44.600 --> 03:50.500 and Jacob. They became wealthy men and they prospered because the Lord 03:50.500 --> 03:51.500 was with them. 03:53.000 --> 03:58.300 We read about Joseph who overcame all the difficulties in his life and 03:58.300 --> 04:02.300 rose to become a successful man in the land of Egypt. 04:04.200 --> 04:08.900 Kings, David and Solomon were successful in all their undertakings 04:09.000 --> 04:10.800 because the Lord was with them. 04:12.300 --> 04:16.200 And even Daniel, who came safely through the Lions den was 04:16.200 --> 04:22.900 considered prosperous before King Darius. In our formation Labs, we 04:22.900 --> 04:25.700 often talk about success. 04:27.200 --> 04:30.700 What it means to be a successful student. 04:32.100 --> 04:38.300 The successful Pastor, Deaconess servant of the Lord. 04:39.500 --> 04:44.300 But the Lutheran question, always arises what does it mean? What is 04:44.300 --> 04:44.900 success? 04:44.900 --> 04:46.400 How do we measure it? 04:48.800 --> 04:50.900 Certainly not the way the world does. 04:53.400 --> 04:58.200 So, what does success as a servant of the Lord really look like. 05:00.000 --> 05:05.800 Perhaps there's one episode from the account of King Hezekiah that can 05:05.800 --> 05:06.300 help us. 05:06.300 --> 05:08.100 It was in 701 05:08.100 --> 05:10.800 BC 14 years into his reign. 05:11.700 --> 05:14.900 The Assyrian King Sennacherib invaded Judah. 05:17.600 --> 05:21.300 The Assyrians had already defeated, the northern kingdom. 05:22.700 --> 05:29.300 And so Hezekiah, fearful a prosperous King wanted to appease the enemy 05:29.300 --> 05:30.800 and save his country. 05:31.900 --> 05:33.900 And so he emptied his own Treasury. 05:35.800 --> 05:37.000 But it wasn't enough. 05:38.400 --> 05:42.900 Sennacherib demanded more and marched his armies against Jerusalem. 05:44.300 --> 05:49.800 And on the way he taunted and he defied the Lord comparing the Lord 05:49.800 --> 05:52.800 to all of the powerless gods of the nations 05:52.800 --> 05:59.600 he'd already defeated. And he threatened, that Jerusalem would never be 05:59.600 --> 05:59.900 able to 06:00.000 --> 06:01.000 stand. 06:02.700 --> 06:07.500 The Lord God would never be able to protect the city from his mighty 06:07.500 --> 06:08.400 hands. 06:10.900 --> 06:18.200 And so when Hezekiah the successful King heard the threat, he tore his 06:18.200 --> 06:19.200 Royal robes. 06:20.400 --> 06:24.300 He put on sackcloth and he went into the temple. 06:25.700 --> 06:29.800 He immediately sent a messenger to the prophet 06:29.800 --> 06:34.500 Isaiah. He was seeking the wisdom and counsel of God. 06:35.700 --> 06:41.400 And it came, Isaiah told him not to be afraid because Sennacherib was 06:41.400 --> 06:43.900 going to hear her a simple rumor 06:45.500 --> 06:48.400 and return home and he would die by the sword. 06:51.200 --> 06:55.300 But Hezekiah, but Sennacherib continued marching. 06:56.500 --> 07:01.600 And continued to defy the Lord and he sent a threatening letter to 07:01.600 --> 07:04.900 Hezekiah who once again knew what he had to do. 07:04.900 --> 07:08.400 He took it into the house of the Lord laid it before the Lord and he 07:08.400 --> 07:09.900 prayed a simple prayer. 07:11.500 --> 07:14.200 Oh Lord, our God 07:15.400 --> 07:21.600 please save us from his hand. That all the kingdoms of the earth 07:21.600 --> 07:27.600 may know that you O Lord Our God alone. And once again the Lord's 07:27.600 --> 07:29.700 answer came through the prophet 07:29.700 --> 07:33.700 Isaiah, Assyria would never fire a shot. 07:34.100 --> 07:37.800 They would never enter into the city of Jerusalem. 07:38.200 --> 07:41.600 The Lord promised that he would defend, and save the city. 07:45.100 --> 07:51.200 And that very night, the word of the Lord came to pass. The angel of 07:51.200 --> 07:52.100 the Lord, 07:53.500 --> 07:59.400 one angel, killed 185 thousand Assyrians. 08:01.300 --> 08:06.400 Sennacherib fled in terror back to Nineveh where he was murdered by 08:06.400 --> 08:08.000 his own sons. 08:09.500 --> 08:13.000 You see the Lord was with Hezekiah. 08:14.000 --> 08:17.500 And so, we prospered he succeeded. 08:19.400 --> 08:22.700 The story continues, when the sun arose 08:22.700 --> 08:28.300 the next morning, people of Jerusalem looked out on all of that 08:28.300 --> 08:29.400 devastation. 08:30.600 --> 08:35.600 Picture the scene as they peaked over the wall, fearful of what was 08:35.600 --> 08:36.799 about to come. 08:37.900 --> 08:40.799 All they saw was dead bodies. 08:41.500 --> 08:45.900 185,000 dead bodies. 08:45.900 --> 08:50.500 Their their enemy had been destroyed, their God had saved them, 08:50.500 --> 08:52.900 imagine they're awe. 08:55.500 --> 08:59.800 There are some commentaries that connect this account with Psalm 46. 09:00.000 --> 09:03.200 , the great Reformation psalm. 09:04.600 --> 09:08.500 And you can hear them that morning singing a song of praise. 09:08.600 --> 09:13.100 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in time of 09:13.100 --> 09:19.900 trouble. And the song goes on and on as it comes to the refrain, the 09:19.900 --> 09:23.400 Lord Almighty is with us. 09:25.600 --> 09:29.300 Picture them running through the streets that morning spreading the 09:29.300 --> 09:34.900 news come and see the works of the Lord, the desolations that he's 09:34.900 --> 09:36.600 brought on the earth, the earth. 09:37.800 --> 09:40.600 He makes wars cease to the ends of the Earth. 09:40.600 --> 09:43.300 He breaks the bow and shatters the spear. 09:43.400 --> 09:48.600 He burns the shields with fire and as the celebration goes on, 09:49.500 --> 09:52.200 suddenly the word of the Lord rings out. 09:54.300 --> 09:55.200 Be still 09:56.300 --> 09:59.100 and know that I am, God. 10:01.300 --> 10:06.300 And in that moment since the peace that would have pervaded the city. 10:08.500 --> 10:12.100 The Lord Almighty is with us. 10:14.200 --> 10:18.600 That's the message we Christians hear every year at Christmas time. A 10:18.600 --> 10:20.600 message of good news of great 10:20.600 --> 10:24.600 joy of a baby who is called Emmanuel, 10:24.600 --> 10:26.200 God is with us. 10:27.400 --> 10:32.700 Of a perfect King, who emptied his treasury emptied himself and became 10:32.700 --> 10:33.500 a man. 10:34.800 --> 10:38.600 Who came down to earth to save his people from their enemies. 10:40.300 --> 10:43.900 It was at the cross that he defeated sin. At the empty tomb 10:43.900 --> 10:49.300 He annihilated death. He saved you. 10:51.100 --> 10:51.800 He saved you. 10:51.800 --> 10:54.000 When there was nothing that you could do. 10:55.300 --> 10:57.400 No treasure that you could offer. 10:58.400 --> 11:03.700 He saved you by grace through faith, which is in Christ Jesus. 11:06.300 --> 11:10.100 And as this Jesus, our King, ascended to his throne 11:11.200 --> 11:14.300 He promised I am with you. 11:15.800 --> 11:19.700 I am with you always even to the end of the age. 11:20.500 --> 11:23.100 The Lord Almighty is with you 11:23.100 --> 11:25.300 that is the word for today. 11:27.800 --> 11:33.000 The Lord who came to save you has been with you since that day 11:33.000 --> 11:37.700 He washed you, cleansed you claimed you as his own and water in the 11:37.700 --> 11:39.500 word of holy baptism. 11:41.200 --> 11:46.700 He has enriched you. He has strengthened you. He has protected you in 11:46.700 --> 11:49.400 times of illness pain 11:51.400 --> 11:57.200 and persecution and suffering, and sorrow and loss. 11:59.100 --> 11:59.800 The Lord Almighty 12:00.000 --> 12:03.400 is with you every time the enemy attacks. 12:05.000 --> 12:06.000 The Lord is with you 12:06.000 --> 12:09.500 when everything else around, you seems to be failing. 12:11.200 --> 12:12.500 The Lord is with you 12:14.100 --> 12:16.300 and that's the key to success. 12:18.200 --> 12:23.100 Our text today is one bookend, the beginning of the reign of King 12:23.100 --> 12:24.100 Hezekiah. 12:25.900 --> 12:31.900 In second Chronicles chapter 31, we have the other bookend a summary 12:31.900 --> 12:33.000 of his reign. 12:34.800 --> 12:38.700 Thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah. 12:40.400 --> 12:45.700 And he did, what was good and right and faithful before the Lord his 12:45.700 --> 12:50.800 God. And every work that he undertook in the service of the house of 12:50.800 --> 12:55.400 God and in accordance with the Law and the Commandments, seeking his God, 12:55.800 --> 12:57.400 he did with all his heart. 12:59.500 --> 13:00.800 And he prospered. 13:03.100 --> 13:05.000 That's what success looks like. 13:07.400 --> 13:09.300 Brothers and Sisters in Christ 13:10.000 --> 13:12.800 come and see the works of the Lord. 13:14.000 --> 13:16.200 See what the Lord has done for you. 13:16.200 --> 13:17.600 He has saved you. 13:17.600 --> 13:21.400 He is with you when you go out. 13:23.000 --> 13:23.800 In Him 13:25.100 --> 13:26.300 you will succeed. 13:27.400 --> 13:29.600 You too, will prosper. 13:31.600 --> 13:33.000 In the name of Jesus. 13:33.600 --> 13:34.300 Amen. 13:35.800 --> 13:39.300 May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding 13:39.800 --> 13:43.500 keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 13:44.200 --> 13:44.800 Amen.
