WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.125 --> 00:00:01.925 Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God 2 00:00:01.925 --> 00:00:04.125 our Father and Jesus Christ, Our Lord. 3 00:00:04.525 --> 00:00:05.025 Amen. 4 00:00:05.725 --> 00:00:06.625 The holy gospel 5 00:00:06.625 --> 00:00:08.925 you've just heard is the basis of today's sermon. 6 00:00:09.025 --> 00:00:10.025 Please be seated. 7 00:00:14.225 --> 00:00:19.125 You hear this, probably same story told the number of different ways. 8 00:00:19.125 --> 00:00:25.925 And even if it's not exactly the same person, you kind of realize that 9 00:00:25.925 --> 00:00:29.625 the evangelists are telling the same story. The paralytic on a mat. 10 00:00:30.025 --> 00:00:34.425 And whether it's Luke telling the story about how they broke through 11 00:00:34.425 --> 00:00:39.925 the ceiling of a house in order to lower the guy on the mat down in to 12 00:00:39.925 --> 00:00:43.125 see Jesus. Or here, Jesus getting out of the boat 13 00:00:43.225 --> 00:00:49.425 and running into the paralytic, who's there on a mat. And all the 14 00:00:49.425 --> 00:00:52.425 people around saying in their hearts, who is this guy 15 00:00:52.425 --> 00:00:54.425 who dares to forgive sins? 16 00:00:55.125 --> 00:00:56.425 It's the same story. 17 00:00:57.325 --> 00:01:02.225 It's a story you find recurring throughout history, throughout our 18 00:01:02.225 --> 00:01:03.525 world throughout our lives. 19 00:01:04.425 --> 00:01:07.925 After all, I was in the parish for 27 years. 20 00:01:07.925 --> 00:01:11.725 I constantly had to fight the battle especially with those who are 21 00:01:11.725 --> 00:01:12.925 coming from 22 00:01:13.125 --> 00:01:16.125 more of reformed traditions or Baptist traditions. 23 00:01:16.125 --> 00:01:20.325 Say, who is this guy who stands up in front of the service and dares 24 00:01:20.325 --> 00:01:21.825 to forgive sins? 25 00:01:25.025 --> 00:01:28.225 It's just the way that our world works. 26 00:01:30.825 --> 00:01:32.325 But what we see in there 27 00:01:34.525 --> 00:01:37.025 isn't merely the Forgiveness of sins. 28 00:01:37.025 --> 00:01:38.125 It's the Savior. 29 00:01:39.125 --> 00:01:42.325 And when he's delivered, the Forgiveness of sins comes with him. 30 00:01:43.625 --> 00:01:47.525 And there is the most important thing that I'm going to say today. As 31 00:01:47.525 --> 00:01:48.625 the savior is delivered 32 00:01:48.625 --> 00:01:52.325 the forgiveness of sins comes with him and with that is life and 33 00:01:52.325 --> 00:01:53.125 salvation. 34 00:01:56.625 --> 00:01:59.325 They bring the man on the mat to Jesus. 35 00:02:00.725 --> 00:02:03.625 And it says something interesting, that a lot of people have trouble 36 00:02:03.625 --> 00:02:04.025 with. 37 00:02:06.025 --> 00:02:11.325 When he saw their faith, he said Son your sins are forgiven. 38 00:02:12.325 --> 00:02:15.125 Same thing in Luke when he tells the story. 39 00:02:15.125 --> 00:02:19.425 Same thing in Mark. When he sees their faith or seeing their faith or 40 00:02:19.625 --> 00:02:24.125 seeing his faith, depending on which evangelists you're following. 41 00:02:27.425 --> 00:02:30.325 Which leads me to an interesting thought that 42 00:02:31.625 --> 00:02:35.825 struck me like a brick across the head 43 00:02:35.825 --> 00:02:37.325 the first time I thought about it. 44 00:02:39.125 --> 00:02:42.625 You see, every time I read those stories prior to this. 45 00:02:43.925 --> 00:02:47.925 I thought that guy really wants to be healed. 46 00:02:47.925 --> 00:02:51.225 He wants to be able to walk his friends, brought him there in order to 47 00:02:51.225 --> 00:02:52.225 be able to walk. 48 00:02:52.225 --> 00:02:56.925 But all three of the Evangelist, who record the story say when he saw 49 00:02:56.925 --> 00:02:59.725 their faith, or when he saw his faith. 50 00:03:00.625 --> 00:03:06.225 Maybe what he had come there for was really to get the Forgiveness of 51 00:03:06.225 --> 00:03:06.825 sins. 52 00:03:09.625 --> 00:03:13.425 Because Faith, which receives, Jesus receives 53 00:03:13.425 --> 00:03:16.125 first and foremost that, which is eternal. 54 00:03:18.325 --> 00:03:23.225 Receives, first and foremost, that, which can never be taken away. 55 00:03:23.525 --> 00:03:27.725 If Jesus heals the man and tells him to stand up and go about his 56 00:03:27.725 --> 00:03:28.225 business. 57 00:03:28.225 --> 00:03:34.325 Not only does he go about his business, but he's going to get sick and 58 00:03:34.325 --> 00:03:35.225 die again. 59 00:03:36.625 --> 00:03:39.925 The forgiveness, the Christ brings him is the one eternal thing that 60 00:03:39.925 --> 00:03:40.925 he'll have in his life. 61 00:03:41.025 --> 00:03:44.625 And the one thing that faith is ultimately going to receive and have 62 00:03:44.625 --> 00:03:45.425 forever. 63 00:03:47.725 --> 00:03:53.525 And as we who deliver good things to God's, people should know, beyond 64 00:03:53.525 --> 00:03:57.725 all else. If we make it our mission to bring them something 65 00:03:57.725 --> 00:04:02.325 other than the forgiveness of sins were not giving the greatest gift. 66 00:04:03.725 --> 00:04:07.725 We're not giving that which is going to last that, which is eternal. 67 00:04:08.625 --> 00:04:14.225 But it isn't only that the forgiveness of sins is to say that you 68 00:04:14.225 --> 00:04:15.125 speak remission 69 00:04:15.125 --> 00:04:17.725 Ffor those things that have occurred in the past. 70 00:04:19.225 --> 00:04:22.025 In fact, you see, Jesus doing things 71 00:04:23.525 --> 00:04:25.325 backwards in a lot of ways. 72 00:04:26.425 --> 00:04:30.525 For example, in Luke when the man is lowered through the roof. 73 00:04:32.225 --> 00:04:33.925 He's going down to see God. 74 00:04:33.925 --> 00:04:36.525 That's not the way that you see God in the Bible. 75 00:04:36.525 --> 00:04:40.125 Is it? You go up on a mountain to see God, you look up into heaven to 76 00:04:40.125 --> 00:04:41.025 see God. 77 00:04:41.725 --> 00:04:42.825 When you go to see God 78 00:04:42.825 --> 00:04:46.025 you don't go down to see the guy hopping out of the boat. 79 00:04:47.425 --> 00:04:51.025 When you go to see God and you need to be forgiven, you don't expect a 80 00:04:51.025 --> 00:04:54.825 guy who's going to spit on your tongue and stick, his fingers in your 81 00:04:54.825 --> 00:04:55.425 ears. 82 00:04:56.625 --> 00:04:58.525 When you go to see God to be healed. 83 00:04:58.525 --> 00:05:02.025 You don't expect a guy to make a paste out of spitting, mud and rub it 84 00:05:02.025 --> 00:05:04.025 on your eyes and say go wash now. 85 00:05:09.425 --> 00:05:14.525 Because when you expect to see God, you expect something that brings 86 00:05:14.525 --> 00:05:20.125 you into the heavens. Something that's going to transform your world 87 00:05:20.125 --> 00:05:22.525 into a more glorious world. 88 00:05:24.025 --> 00:05:29.225 But you see those who truly know, God, those who truly have faith 89 00:05:30.025 --> 00:05:33.025 understand that all of these things are hidden from our sight. 90 00:05:34.225 --> 00:05:37.525 And are known only by Revelation, it's only because God has spoken 91 00:05:37.525 --> 00:05:41.225 the word that we know that any of these things exist, beyond what we 92 00:05:41.225 --> 00:05:41.725 see. 93 00:05:47.525 --> 00:05:50.125 Now, if we're going to know, God, we're going to know this one who's 94 00:05:50.125 --> 00:05:51.525 down on the seashore. 95 00:05:52.925 --> 00:05:54.725 Down in the house. Down in the muck. 96 00:05:56.325 --> 00:05:57.725 Making a paste of mud. 97 00:06:00.025 --> 00:06:01.425 We're going to see this one 98 00:06:03.025 --> 00:06:06.125 Wwho sees this man laying there on a mat. 99 00:06:07.225 --> 00:06:10.725 Now, I believe the translation the ESV what you just read? 100 00:06:12.325 --> 00:06:16.325 Says, Jesus looks at him and says, son, your sins are forgiven. 101 00:06:20.025 --> 00:06:23.925 But he says something that you can overlook pretty quickly as you get 102 00:06:23.925 --> 00:06:28.125 to the big bold part about the Pharisees, doubting it in their hearts 103 00:06:28.125 --> 00:06:29.225 and all the other stuff. 104 00:06:32.325 --> 00:06:36.525 He says, in Greek pharsi technol. 105 00:06:39.025 --> 00:06:40.125 Not son, 106 00:06:41.425 --> 00:06:42.225 Child. 107 00:06:44.825 --> 00:06:47.025 All the sudden all these pictures from all over 108 00:06:47.025 --> 00:06:49.125 the Bible, come swarming in. 109 00:06:52.925 --> 00:06:56.325 And he held a little child in his arms and said, let the little 110 00:06:56.325 --> 00:06:59.525 children come to me and forbid them, not for to such belongs. 111 00:06:59.525 --> 00:07:00.425 The kingdom of God. 112 00:07:00.425 --> 00:07:03.125 I tell you, anyone who would not receive the kingdom of God, like a 113 00:07:03.125 --> 00:07:05.025 little child will never enter it. 114 00:07:05.925 --> 00:07:08.925 Or on the disciples are debating about who's the greatest. 115 00:07:08.925 --> 00:07:13.425 He takes a little child and puts them in the puts him, in the midst of 116 00:07:13.425 --> 00:07:13.625 them 117 00:07:13.625 --> 00:07:16.525 and says, this is the greatest of them all. 118 00:07:17.925 --> 00:07:21.425 He speaks about divine protection of the Angels themselves. 119 00:07:21.425 --> 00:07:24.425 For those who would abuse these children. 120 00:07:24.425 --> 00:07:24.925 I tell you 121 00:07:24.925 --> 00:07:27.825 Anyone who causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin. 122 00:07:27.925 --> 00:07:30.925 It would be better for him to have a great Millstone tied around his 123 00:07:30.925 --> 00:07:32.825 neck and tossed into the sea. 124 00:07:33.425 --> 00:07:37.425 For I tell you their Angels always stand before my father's face. 125 00:07:43.225 --> 00:07:44.625 But he says to this one. 126 00:07:46.225 --> 00:07:46.925 paidí, 127 00:07:48.225 --> 00:07:49.025 child. 128 00:07:53.025 --> 00:07:56.925 Is to say more than any of us could ever say in a single word. 129 00:08:00.925 --> 00:08:03.825 And just, as he knew, the hearts of the Pharisees who were saying, who 130 00:08:03.825 --> 00:08:05.425 can forgive these sins. 131 00:08:07.725 --> 00:08:10.225 He knew the heart and the need of the man, who lay on the mat. 132 00:08:12.325 --> 00:08:16.225 Back when I was in seminary, one of the most memorable sermons, that I 133 00:08:16.225 --> 00:08:20.425 remember came from one of my history, professors William 134 00:08:20.425 --> 00:08:24.425 Weinrich and he was talking about visiting Bethesda, Lutheran home 135 00:08:24.425 --> 00:08:24.725 back 136 00:08:24.725 --> 00:08:30.125 when they had a residential Center, where people were, were still 137 00:08:30.125 --> 00:08:33.325 handicapped and living in the home. 138 00:08:34.425 --> 00:08:38.825 And he said, there was this young man who had to be tied to his 139 00:08:38.825 --> 00:08:40.825 wheelchair because he had this 140 00:08:41.225 --> 00:08:45.225 disease or problem, or mental illness, or whatever you want to call it. 141 00:08:45.425 --> 00:08:49.525 That made him literally rip chunks of flesh off of his body. 142 00:08:54.025 --> 00:08:54.925 Weinrich said, 143 00:08:56.925 --> 00:08:57.425 I asked him 144 00:08:57.425 --> 00:08:59.125 if Jesus could give you anything 145 00:08:59.125 --> 00:09:00.525 what would you ask him for? 146 00:09:03.625 --> 00:09:05.625 The man said, forgiveness. 147 00:09:10.025 --> 00:09:11.125 There's one eternal. 148 00:09:13.425 --> 00:09:15.625 One gift that never ends. 149 00:09:17.425 --> 00:09:20.025 Because when Jesus gives forgiveness, he gives himself. 150 00:09:20.025 --> 00:09:21.425 He gives his father with him. 151 00:09:21.425 --> 00:09:23.625 He makes us eternal children 152 00:09:23.625 --> 00:09:26.225 who cannot be denied salvation. 153 00:09:28.025 --> 00:09:32.525 Because his blood has won it. His gift has given it. 154 00:09:34.325 --> 00:09:37.125 And nothing in heaven and on Earth could take it away. 155 00:09:39.225 --> 00:09:40.725 And that's why that word tharsi. 156 00:09:42.625 --> 00:09:44.925 it's a rare word in the New Testament. 157 00:09:44.925 --> 00:09:49.325 Tharsis comes in, because it's only spoken in times of great 158 00:09:49.325 --> 00:09:50.825 trouble and tribulation. 159 00:09:51.425 --> 00:09:52.725 It's often translated 160 00:09:52.725 --> 00:09:53.425 take heart. 161 00:09:53.425 --> 00:09:55.725 I don't even know how to translate it in English. 162 00:09:55.725 --> 00:09:59.925 The the right way, but it just means that you've got to be courageous, 163 00:09:59.925 --> 00:10:03.425 but there's a reason for your courage, things are going to turn out. 164 00:10:03.425 --> 00:10:04.125 Okay. 165 00:10:10.925 --> 00:10:11.525 And they will. 166 00:10:14.225 --> 00:10:18.825 Because he, who can forgive sins can also order this world for the 167 00:10:18.825 --> 00:10:19.925 sake of his church 168 00:10:21.025 --> 00:10:22.425 and has promised to do so. 169 00:10:24.625 --> 00:10:29.425 He who can forgive sins has promised that all things work together for 170 00:10:29.425 --> 00:10:29.725 good 171 00:10:29.725 --> 00:10:32.325 for those who love God and are called according to their purposes. 172 00:10:32.425 --> 00:10:37.525 And he will fulfill that promise. He who can forgive sins 173 00:10:38.025 --> 00:10:41.225 has told you that neither life nor death nor principalities nor powers 174 00:10:41.225 --> 00:10:43.325 nor things present, nor things to come. 175 00:10:44.025 --> 00:10:47.925 Nothing in all creation, will be able to stand between you and your 176 00:10:47.925 --> 00:10:48.625 savior. 177 00:10:49.525 --> 00:10:53.025 And your Father and whose house you will live eternally. 178 00:10:54.825 --> 00:10:56.425 And the gifts that he brings. 179 00:10:59.125 --> 00:11:00.625 And the promise will be kept. 180 00:11:02.725 --> 00:11:08.025 And so as we wander through a world filled with increasing amounts of 181 00:11:08.025 --> 00:11:12.525 rabid, hatred, toward Christianity, and Atheism, and sexual 182 00:11:12.525 --> 00:11:19.325 immorality, and all kinds of vice, pandemics, and disease, and death, 183 00:11:19.325 --> 00:11:21.125 and hardship and sorrow. 184 00:11:22.925 --> 00:11:27.125 And midterms and finals, or whatever else. 185 00:11:31.525 --> 00:11:36.425 This one who brings the forgiveness of sins comes to you and says our 186 00:11:36.425 --> 00:11:37.425 tharsi technon. 187 00:11:39.825 --> 00:11:43.825 The child, I grabbed to be mine in baptism is still my child. 188 00:11:46.125 --> 00:11:47.325 We share a father. 189 00:11:49.125 --> 00:11:50.125 We share a life. 190 00:11:51.325 --> 00:11:57.625 A life that only the one who can forgive the sins, or forgive sins, 191 00:11:57.725 --> 00:12:01.625 raise the dead, and make the paralytic walk. 192 00:12:02.825 --> 00:12:06.525 The blind to see the deaf, to hear the mute to speak. 193 00:12:08.225 --> 00:12:08.925 This one 194 00:12:10.325 --> 00:12:12.525 comes to you and calls you his child. 195 00:12:13.025 --> 00:12:18.025 This one comes and says your sins are forgiven in Jesus name. 196 00:12:18.625 --> 00:12:19.125 Amen. 197 00:12:21.425 --> 00:12:23.925 May the peace of God, which passes all understanding. 198 00:12:24.125 --> 00:12:28.225 Keep your hearts and Mminds in Christ Jesus to life Everlasting. 199 00:12:29.125 --> 00:12:29.625 Amen.
