WEBVTT 1 00:00:06.723 --> 00:00:10.823 I'm Dale Meyer and I am pleased to welcome you to Mission Works 2 00:00:10.823 --> 00:00:13.923 Thanks to Donors. In our last episode 3 00:00:13.923 --> 00:00:15.323 we spoke with Dr. 4 00:00:15.323 --> 00:00:17.423 Thomas Zelt, who has pioneered 5 00:00:17.423 --> 00:00:18.423 a course here at 6 00:00:18.423 --> 00:00:23.823 Concordia Seminary an intensive course in Israel. With us 7 00:00:23.823 --> 00:00:28.723 today are two students who took the course Graham Jenkins and Janis 8 00:00:28.723 --> 00:00:34.623 Mikits. Welcome, introduce yourselves a little bit more to our, our 9 00:00:34.623 --> 00:00:36.123 donors, Graham. Sure. 10 00:00:36.123 --> 00:00:38.023 My name is Graham Jenkins 11 00:00:38.023 --> 00:00:41.523 I studied mechanical engineering at the University of Maine and 12 00:00:41.523 --> 00:00:42.423 where I got my undergrad. 13 00:00:42.423 --> 00:00:47.423 Did ROTC in college was commissioned as a second lieutenant 14 00:00:47.423 --> 00:00:50.323 in the Army Corps of Engineers just down the road at Fort Leonard Wood 15 00:00:50.323 --> 00:00:51.023 about 2 hours away. 16 00:00:51.023 --> 00:00:56.823 Spent a number of years in the military that after that, went out to 17 00:00:56.823 --> 00:00:59.423 work as a civilian engineer, mostly for the automotive industry. 18 00:00:59.423 --> 00:01:02.823 And at that point, I heard the call and decided that it was time to 19 00:01:02.823 --> 00:01:05.623 come to Concordia Seminary be a pastor and God's flock. 20 00:01:05.823 --> 00:01:06.423 Wonderful. 21 00:01:06.423 --> 00:01:08.523 And did you serve overseas? 22 00:01:08.523 --> 00:01:12.523 Yes, Afghanistan 2013 to 2014. 23 00:01:12.523 --> 00:01:18.623 We are graduating real life pastors and Janis. My name is Janis Mikits 24 00:01:18.623 --> 00:01:21.723 I was born and raised in a small town in Indiana named 25 00:01:21.723 --> 00:01:27.123 Beech Grove, attended West Point earned a degree in economics and 26 00:01:27.123 --> 00:01:31.923 environmental engineering served in the military for 20 years, as an 27 00:01:31.923 --> 00:01:34.323 artillery officer as a college professor 28 00:01:34.323 --> 00:01:35.923 and then as a diplomat. 29 00:01:36.923 --> 00:01:40.423 And if I remember correctly, the Lutheran Hour, had something with 30 00:01:40.423 --> 00:01:40.723 you 31 00:01:40.723 --> 00:01:43.323 coming to Concordia Seminary. Yes, sir. 32 00:01:43.323 --> 00:01:45.523 During my last assignment 33 00:01:45.523 --> 00:01:51.923 I was listening to Lutheran Hour and because I was assigned to Germany 34 00:01:51.923 --> 00:01:55.523 and we didn't have an LCMS congregation nearby and you were 35 00:01:55.523 --> 00:02:03.223 actually a guest for that episode and I've been praying to God for a 36 00:02:03.223 --> 00:02:08.123 sign of his will for me in my life and you came on there and talked 37 00:02:08.123 --> 00:02:12.023 about the need for people to enter the ministry because congregations 38 00:02:12.023 --> 00:02:16.723 simply had no pastor. And Holy Spirit reached down and grabbed me 39 00:02:16.723 --> 00:02:22.323 and one year later, I was sitting here at the Seminary. Yeah and I couldn't believe the story when 40 00:02:22.323 --> 00:02:25.723 you told it to me, but this is the way the Mission Works, 41 00:02:25.723 --> 00:02:26.823 it moves forward. 42 00:02:29.023 --> 00:02:32.223 Would you please tell us your experiences? 43 00:02:32.223 --> 00:02:34.823 They say satisfied 44 00:02:34.823 --> 00:02:35.923 customer is a happy 45 00:02:35.923 --> 00:02:44.123 customer. Tell us the top drawer things from your time in Israel. Yeah, as 46 00:02:44.123 --> 00:02:44.523 Christians 47 00:02:44.523 --> 00:02:49.323 we know that the Bible is both history, as well as the Law and Gospel 48 00:02:49.323 --> 00:02:49.523 message. 49 00:02:49.523 --> 00:02:54.223 But being there Israel sitting on site, doing a Bible study in 50 00:02:54.223 --> 00:02:57.123 the location, where the word was written was an unreal 51 00:02:57.123 --> 00:02:59.523 experience. To be reading through a scripture 52 00:02:59.523 --> 00:03:03.523 a lot of times people will come to a place name and it just at the 53 00:03:03.523 --> 00:03:04.023 register 54 00:03:04.023 --> 00:03:05.223 so they just kind of skim on by. 55 00:03:05.223 --> 00:03:07.923 But these are real places where a real events actually happened. 56 00:03:07.923 --> 00:03:12.223 And then when you see these places in the relation to one another and 57 00:03:12.223 --> 00:03:15.023 you're able to connect the dots in such a way, it just makes scripture 58 00:03:15.023 --> 00:03:15.923 come alive. 59 00:03:15.923 --> 00:03:20.223 For instance, when you're sitting on the North Shore of the Sea of 60 00:03:20.223 --> 00:03:23.123 Galilee, which was likely the area where the Sermon of the Mount take 61 00:03:23.123 --> 00:03:25.623 place, you really get this image that as Jesus is 62 00:03:26.423 --> 00:03:31.723 speaking through a sermon, he's, he's touching on visual cues and 63 00:03:31.723 --> 00:03:35.623 imagery that people sitting on the mount themselves looking out at the 64 00:03:35.623 --> 00:03:38.323 Sea of Galilee would have seen it would have connected with his message. 65 00:03:38.323 --> 00:03:41.723 Jesus was a practical teacher, he was a real guy at a real place. 66 00:03:41.723 --> 00:03:46.323 Before we started taping you mentioned Janis that this is 67 00:03:46.323 --> 00:03:48.823 coming at the start of your ministry. 68 00:03:48.823 --> 00:03:51.423 Would you repeat that and expound on it a little bit? 69 00:03:51.423 --> 00:03:56.723 Yes sir, in many cases congregations lovingly 70 00:03:56.723 --> 00:04:02.423 give a gift to their pastors usually at retirement, or maybe after 71 00:04:02.423 --> 00:04:04.323 20 or 25 years of service. 72 00:04:04.323 --> 00:04:09.223 And in many cases, it's, it's a trip to Israel and, and that's very 73 00:04:09.223 --> 00:04:10.823 kind and generous of the congregation. 74 00:04:10.823 --> 00:04:17.723 But what I noticed on this trip is that the the lessons that I learned 75 00:04:17.723 --> 00:04:24.123 on this trip and on in this class will enable me to share them with 76 00:04:24.123 --> 00:04:26.323 people for 20 to 30 years of 77 00:04:26.423 --> 00:04:27.823 Ministry throughout the time. 78 00:04:27.823 --> 00:04:34.723 And in fact, this past Sunday, after I returned from Israel, my RV 79 00:04:34.723 --> 00:04:39.723 Supervisor was unable to teach the Bible study class that we normally 80 00:04:39.723 --> 00:04:44.723 have on Sunday mornings and he asked me to fill in for him, and with I 81 00:04:44.723 --> 00:04:47.323 shared some of the lessons that I learned on this trip 82 00:04:47.323 --> 00:04:51.523 with over 50 of the congregation members. You didn't have to research 83 00:04:51.523 --> 00:04:54.223 that the topics it did, you know? No. 84 00:04:54.223 --> 00:04:59.223 Been there done that. And it and it was, it was part of the Sea of 85 00:04:59.223 --> 00:04:59.323 Galilee. 86 00:04:59.323 --> 00:05:07.223 And and so, we were able to, to talk about how Jesus came down and met 87 00:05:07.223 --> 00:05:11.823 people where they were. You know, I am so proud to be connected with 88 00:05:11.823 --> 00:05:16.523 Concordia Seminary, and to be a donor to a seminary 89 00:05:16.523 --> 00:05:18.623 that promotes the mission in this way. 90 00:05:18.623 --> 00:05:21.323 Let me ask you the most important question of all. 91 00:05:22.423 --> 00:05:25.223 What did this trip do for you 92 00:05:25.223 --> 00:05:27.723 in your relationship and faith in Jesus? Well it definitely did strengthen my faith that 93 00:05:27.723 --> 00:05:35.923 the Bible is God's word and it's God word delivered to us 94 00:05:35.923 --> 00:05:36.123 exactly 95 00:05:36.123 --> 00:05:42.223 as he as he intended it. Like, I said, being on-site and being being 96 00:05:42.223 --> 00:05:45.223 in the areas where it was written, seeing the places that they were 97 00:05:45.223 --> 00:05:48.723 talking about walking, the path that Jesus walked it just it makes it 98 00:05:48.723 --> 00:05:49.523 that much more real. 99 00:05:49.523 --> 00:05:52.923 And then having those visual cues that you can connect in your head to 100 00:05:52.923 --> 00:05:57.023 scripture hammers the message home and solidifies it and makes it that much 101 00:05:57.023 --> 00:05:57.623 easier to communicate. 102 00:05:58.623 --> 00:06:01.623 I would largely echo what Graham said. 103 00:06:01.623 --> 00:06:08.723 I mean so often, when we read God's word it, we digest it, but we, we 104 00:06:08.723 --> 00:06:12.123 don't bear in mind of the concrete nature. 105 00:06:12.123 --> 00:06:19.923 God is a Creator and he comes down to his creation to lovingly care 106 00:06:19.923 --> 00:06:22.023 for it and to interact with it. 107 00:06:22.023 --> 00:06:27.323 And being in the Holy Land, seeing where Jesus walked, and where he 108 00:06:27.323 --> 00:06:30.223 taught made it really come home for me. 109 00:06:30.223 --> 00:06:35.423 And I am sure you visualized him actually being their own kind of 110 00:06:35.423 --> 00:06:37.323 hologram fashion, right? Most certainly. 111 00:06:37.323 --> 00:06:41.523 And and the great thing is because of what you've learned and the 112 00:06:41.523 --> 00:06:44.823 work of the Holy Spirit, one day, we actually are going to see him 113 00:06:44.823 --> 00:06:45.223 face-to-face. 114 00:06:45.223 --> 00:06:47.523 I want to thank you for being with us. 115 00:06:47.523 --> 00:06:52.123 I've gone Israel myself but only after being in the ministry 116 00:06:52.123 --> 00:06:55.623 some years and my visits were not of the depth in our students 117 00:06:55.623 --> 00:06:56.423 experience. 118 00:06:56.423 --> 00:06:58.523 I'm glad we could share this with 119 00:06:58.623 --> 00:06:59.023 you today. 120 00:06:59.023 --> 00:07:03.023 It's a hands-on way by which Mission Works 121 00:07:03.023 --> 00:07:04.623 Thanks to Donors.
